Outram School Newsletter Volume 1 Number 10 – 14 th April 2016 OUTRAM SCHOOL VISION – A school where children strive for excellence, love learning, develop their passions and reach their potential Dear Parents Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa. Working Bee An apology from me, I had so many different things to comment on in last week’s newsletter I failed to include a thank you to all those who turned out on Sunday 3 April for our Autumn working bee. We had a strong crew of both parents and students and it was incredible what was achieved in short time; two big truckloads of bark spread around the adventure playground, all hard surfaces swept and edges trimmed and multiple trailer loads of branches taken away for disposal. A fantastic effort and very much appreciated. Thank you Ash for all the organisation. ANZAC Day This year ANZAC Day falls in the middle of the school break; Monday of the second week. All available students are encouraged to attend the service. Please wear your school uniform top and meet Mrs Tansley outside Mitchell’s Four Square at 10.50 am. The parade will set off to the cenotaph at 11.00 am. Two attending senior student council members will be asked to lay the school wreath. Otago Swimming Championships We had a small team of swimmers at the Otago Promary School Swimmimg Championships last Saturday. Well done to Toby, Gabby and Georgia for ‘flying the Outram flag’. All three swam faster times than their recorded entry times and there were PBs (personal bests) achieved from the meet. Bike Week Thank you for organising your children to have their bikes at school for the week. On Tuesday, students benefitted from participating in a range of practical cycling skills under the watchful of Constable Ross Greer, our Police Education Officer. The ‘bike track’ has been very popular with students and bikes of all sizes completing circuits of our bottom fields at morning tea and lunchtime. The ‘barrel’ races has been good fun and the plan is to take students on a bike ride out of school at lunchtime Thursday. 15 April 15 April 2 May 4 May 6 May 20 May 25 May 3 June 6 June Duathlon End of Term 1 Start of Term 2 Electoral Roll Closes Nominations called for Nominations close at 12 noon Voting papers sent Voting closes 12 noon Queens Birthday School contact details: 1 Beaumaris Street, Outram. Working Bee – An apology from me, I had so many different things to comment on in last week’s newsletter I failed to include a thank you to all those who turned out on Sunday 3 April for our Autumn working bee. We had a strong crew of both parents and students and it was incredible what was achieved in short time; two big truckloads of bark spread around the adventure playground, all hard surfaces swept and edges trimmed and multiple trailer loads of branches taken away for disposal. Our bike week will finish with Friday’s inter-house duathlon. We will have an early lunch at 12.15 pm and will start the duathlon at 1.00 pm. The junior Year 1 / 2 races will be run first followed by Year 3 / 4 before our seniors. It will be a ‘quick fire’ event and we cannot give specific times for each race. Parents and extended family are most welcome to join us.

This newsletter is the last for Term 1. Thank you for all you have done to support your children at school through the term. I wish all a relaxed and happy break. See you all back at school on Monday 2 May. Nga mihi nui

Board of Trustees Elections As you may or may not be aware it is coming up time for Board of Trustees Elections. We have places to fill so we are looking for some new parents to join our Board of Trustees. If you think you may be interested in standing for one of these positions please call at the office and grab a pamphlet. You could also talk to Jeremy or one of our existing Board members with any queries you may have. It is a great way to be a part of the running of the school and what we do. It is vital that these positions be filled. Please think seriously about becoming a member of the Board now. The timelines are listed on the front page calendar. The Electoral Roll will be open for inspection at the school office from Monday 11th April 2016.

Kiwigolf

Melanie Harper will be coming to Outram School on Tuesday 3rd May to give basic golf lessons to all

Y3 to Y8 students. The cost is $3.50 per student. This will be added to your school account.

Sausage Orders I have included the term sausage order form at the back of this newsletter for anyone

who would like a weekly order for Term 2. Please fill this in and return to the office.

LOST PROPERTY – LAST CHANCE We have an awful lot of lost property which belongs to your children. We will be putting it out on

the courts this Friday and next Friday. Anything that is unclaimed after that date will go to charity, so

it would pay for you to have a check. If in at school any other time just call in to the office foyer and

have a look.

ANZAC Day stories about John Simpson at Gallipoli, by Room 3

John Simpson has a donkey called Duffy. John had died. He got shot in the heart. They visited Turkey. He heard Bang, Bang. It was roasting hot there. He was looking for wounded soldiers. The wounded soldiers had sticky blood. Ryan Miller Aged 6 I was scared when I went up the hill. People were hiding behind the rocks and trees but I found a gun and I shot a guy in the heart as he was aiming at my heart. I pushed the button – bam! The bullet went flying and I shot him. He fell to the ground and that was the end of him. Macklyn O’Connor Aged 6 If I was John Simpson, I would work as hard as. To do my work, I have a donkey. My donkey’s name is Duffy. My donkey is good to me. It was hard to get the hurt soldiers down to the beach. It was very hot getting the soldiers down to the beach. I heard the bullets coming by. I was frightening and nervous. The bullets were very loud when they passed by. Fliss Nichol Aged 6 I could hear the gun shooting. I heard people getting shot. I hurried down the hill. I found a donkey. I called him Duffy. He helped me take the wounded soldiers down to the beach to get them to the dressing station. At night, I still carried people down to the beach. They got bandaged there. Violet Bennie Aged 6 Another day up the track. I said to Duffy “Come on, let’s go. We need to get going.” I saw bullets shooting above my head. I thought they were going to hit me. I felt scared, but I knew that I had to get the wounded soldiers down to the beach. So I went on. I heard the water splashing all around the containers of water on Duffy’s back. I finally got to the bottom. I was proud. I was sweaty. Duffy’s was getting tired. I was too……… Livy Urquhart Aged 6 I could hear the guns shooting. I tied Duffy to a tree at the top of the hill. I hated it when I died. A bullet went straight through my heart. Oliver Warren Aged 6
