Th e goal is engagement. When people are engaged by their surroundings,

they become more invested in their communities. Investment in a place leads to caring about that place and about the people with whom it is shared. A community of engaged citizens is a community rich in caring. When the College Hill Bear Trail bears were fi -

nally installed, it was a treat to see almost instan-taneous engagement within the community. Even as the bears were being lift ed into place, people on the street were slowing down their cars. Pedestrians stopped and asked questions. Conversations were started. Pictures were taken. Th e community be-came more engaged and a sense of satisfaction sent shivers through the spines of those involved.Th e bear trail consists of six fi berglass bears, in-

stalled throughout the College Hill Corridor, a cen-ter of revitalization within the City of Macon since the inception of the College Hill Alliance three years ago. Th e bear trail is just one piece of a larger puzzle involving many community improvement projects, events and people who live, work and/or attend school in the Corridor.Resulting from a partnership with Macon Arts Al-

liance and Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recre-ation with funding from the Knight Neighborhood Challenge and the Community Foundation of Cen-tral Georgia, the College Hill Bear Trail is a public art project meant to bridge gaps and instill a sense of community pride. Th e mascot for Mercer Univer-sity, which is the college in “College Hill,” is a bear, so instantly, the students, faculty and staff of Mercer are drawn to the bears. Th e paintings on the bears are comprised of imagery of local and historical sig-nifi cance to the Macon and Bibb County commu-nity. Th e bears are a symbol of unity. As a public art project, the bear trail has already been

successful, but the project serves the community in other important ways. Th e bear trail is meant to be a walking trail. A way to encourage health and wellness in the community, and through a partnership with Community Health Works, it will do just that.Th e next step will be the release of pamphlets for

the College Hill Bear Trail to be placed on the cam-pus of Mercer University, the Medical Center of Central Georgia, the Convention and Visitors Bu-reau and numerous other sites throughout the city. Th ese pamphlets will contain information about the bears, the artists who created them, and maps of the College Hill Corridor outlining three distinct walk-ing trails. Two of the walking trails pass by three bears each.

Th ey originate at Mercer University and the Medi-cal Center of Central Georgia, respectively. While these trails do not pass every bear, they encourage the faculty, staff and students of Mercer and the visitors, patients and staff of the Medical Center to spend some time each day outside, exercising and engaging with their surroundings. Th e third trail is a three-mile trek which can begin at any of the six bears and leads walkers on a complete tour of the College Hill Bear Trail.Along with the information and maps, the pam-

phlets will encourage walkers to tweet pictures of themselves with the bears and to add the hashtags #beartrail and #corridor to their twe ets. In this age of social media, the bear trail will be a source of community building online and off . It’s a fun way to get people out of their cars, engaged in their com-munity and living healthier, happier lives. So what are you waiting for? Get outside, take a

walk and share your story of walking the College Hill Bear Trail.

Created by Rudy Mendes

The Mississippian Bear was cre-ated by Macon artist Rudy Mendes using marbles, stones, glass, mir-rors and other materials to create

a highly-decorative mosaic. The inspiration for the bear was

the Mississipian culture, mound-building Na-tive American who once fl ourished in the area and are responsible for the mounds at the Ocmulgee National Monument. Ac-cording to Mendes, the Mississippians believed that “all things are con-nected,” and that concept helped the artist to envi-sion and create this bear. He incorporated natural elements into the work, and the design is based on the pottery of the Mis-sissippian culture.

DECEMBER 2-11The 1940s Radio Hour | Macon Little Theatre• Wed.-Sat., 8 p.m., Sun. 2:30 p.m.• $18 adults, $15 seniors, $10 students with ID• 477-3342 or 471-PLAY(7529), maconlittletheatre.org

Take a musical sentimental journey to a bygone era as you experience this “live” radio broadcast from the Hotel Astor’s Algonquin Room on December 21, 1942. The spirit of that era is wonderfully captured. A time when the world was at war and pop music meant “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “I’ll Be Seeing You” and “I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo” (all of which are in the show). Full of 1940s big-band music, swing dancing, patriotism, and old-fashioned sound effects, The 1940s Radio Hour is a holiday treat for the whole family you won’t want to miss.

Painted by Heidi Clinite

The Symphony Bear was cre-ated by Macon artist Heidi Clinite, a classically-trained violinist. She designed the bear to celebrate two of Macon’s cultural and musi-cal treasures: The Macon

Symphony Orchestra and The Grand Opera House. The bear de-picts a performance by the orchestra at the Grand Opera House. The curtains framing the orchestra transform into a red tuxedo coat, in which the bear is dressed. Onlookers can almost hear the beautiful mu-sic of the symphony as they gaze upon this colorful bear.

The Stamp Bear was created by Macon artist Heatherly Dar-nell, with the help of her then husband-to-be Eric Wakefi eld. Painted to look as if the bear had been covered in postage stamps, the Stamp Bear is fi ttingly located across the street from the U.S. Post Offi ce. Each of the stamps which cover the bear feature local historical fi gures, cultural icons, arts and community organizations, conceived as though Macon and Bibb County had issued stamps featuring many of its local treasures. While the beauty of the bear is undeniable, it also serves as a fun way for parents to teach their children about the community in which they live and a great way for tourists to learn about the rich his-tory of Georgia.

NOW – DECEMBER 31Celebrate! and the Festival Of Trees | Museum of Arts and Sciences• 477-3232, masmacon.com

The Celebrate! exhibition, which complements Festival of Trees and includes Holiday celebrations from around the world, begins its 54th season at the Museum on November 22. This exhibition began with one tree in 1957 at the Muse-um’s original location in the Wesleyan College Conservatory on College Street and, over the years, focused sometimes on Christmas trees and celebrations in one or more coun-tries, as well as the stories, music and gifts of Christmas. In 1989 in an effort to broaden its reach, the exhibition’s name was changed to Holiday Celebrations Around the World and through the years, a variety of cultural celebrations have been presented. Celebrate! now rotates through vignettes refl ecting many different cultures—this year it focuses on several Christmas traditions, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Chi-nese New Year. A highlight of the exhibition is The Children’s Tree, for which schools and individual children can make decorations. Celebrate! will be on display at the Museum from November 22 through December 31.

The Tattnall Park Bear was created by Macon artist Connie Redd and was inspired by Tattnall Square Park and the skyline of Mercer University which borders the park. Located directly across the street from Mercer’s campus, this bear signifi es the important role that Mercer has played as a community partner in Macon and Bibb County . The College Hill Corridor project, which is responsible for the Knight Neighbor-hood Challege grants which funded the bear trail project, was conceived by Mercer students as a class project. Since the project’s master plan was created and approved, the corridor has brought more than $5 mil-lion in private funding into the corridor to be used for revitalization and community improvement efforts.

of the group Spectrum, which draws upon the talent of four radiant voices and diverse personalities to form a fi rst class vocal quartet. After spending six stellar years recreating the sound and style of the Four Tops in Las Vegas’ multi-million dollar production shows American Superstars and Legends In Concert, the group has developed the versatility to credibly cover the music of groups from the Platters to the Temptations to Boyz 2 Men. It is this versatility that has propelled them to the status of headlin-ing their own shows in which they perform stirring renditions of the all the best cover tunes.

The great tradition of the Nutcrack-er ballet is one many spectators, young and old, wouldn’t miss, and this holiday season is no exception. Nutcracker of Middle Georgia brings its magic back to the exquisite stage at The Grand Opera House in Macon. The 2011 production of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet will run December 7 at the beautifully restored Grand Opera House. Now celebrating its 27th annual performance, the ballet boasts six professional dancers, hailing from all over the country including a new Sugar Plum.

When it began as a simple organiza-tion in 1985 with no money, scenery or costumes, Nutcracker of Middle Georgia Inc., held its fi rst performance at Porter Auditorium at Wesleyan College. Beginning in 1991, Nutcracker began a free school performance, funded by donations and grants, targeted primarily at public school students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a ballet. The free performance continues for schoolchildren annually. For a market the size of Macon, the quality of the pro-duction staged by Nutcracker of Middle Georgia is exceptional.

Today, performances feature six paid professional dancers and more than 100 dancers representing numerous studios across Central Georgia, making the ballet a true amalgamation of both international and local talent. Twenty-fi ve years of effort, careful planning and design have gone into the collection of top-notch costumes, which are updated frequently, and the acquisition of scenery designed by Bobby Berg of New York.

Even as Nutcracker has evolved from its modest but magical beginnings, one thing remains the same, the beauty of the bal-let and Tchaikovsky’s tradition.

Nutcracker of Middle Georgia invites you to experience the magic, and share it with someone this holiday season.

Painted by Denise Kiefer

The Ocmulgee Bear, painted by Ivey, Georgia artist Denise Kiefer, is also known by the title “Spirits in the Sky.” This bear, which is the only seated bear of the group, features a vibrant night sky revealing a Native American spirit watching over the silhouetted skyline of Macon and the Ocmulgee National Monument. Inspired by the combination of centuries of history prior to the settlement of the city of Macon and the more recent history of Macon and Bibb County, this bear celebrates all the people who have called the banks of the Ocmulgee River home. The shape of the seated bear even mimicsthe shape of the Ocmuglee mounds depicted on its body.
