“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where theSpirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
(II Cor. 3-17)
This is one of the most precious verses in the entire Bible; however, it is often interpreted to justifyresistance to any kind of restriction of one’s desires. “Free to be who God made me to be; free to gowild in worship services; free to write heretical worship music; free from the warnings of Christian friendswho set you on a dark path.” It is applied in a variety of settings. But the liberty being spoken of in the context of the chapter has to do with the unobstructed open
view of the glory of God in Christ. In its context Paul, under inspiration, describes an incident in the OldTestament where Moses, having received the law was radiating God’s glory. The people were fearfulso Moses covered his face. The glory of God was obstructed by the covering because of the fear ofthe people. By contrast, Paul says in verse 18 that there is no barrier, impediment, or obstacle preventing “all”
who believe from beholding Christ in His Person and Work. “But we all, with open face beholding asin a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by theSpirit of the Lord.” This unimpeded knowledge of Christ results in change – literally metamorphosis- both immediate andongoing. Are you changing?
