OVERPORT NEWS

Science Night at Overport!

Last Wednesday during the day and into the evening was an amazing

adventure into science at our school. Our little scientists explored,

hypothesised and experimented throughout the day. We had geologists,

anthropologists, palaeontologists, laboratory chemists, zoologists and even “mad scientists.”

This was a highly successful day followed by

wonderful presentations and engaging activities into the

evening. A huge number of students and their family

members attended.

The classrooms were amazing and the

teachers, who remained in character all day, engaged with students and

parents. Some performed experiments with them and others were explaining about the work being done during our focus on science throughout the day, as well as the science elements from the Victorian Curriculum across this term. I would like to express our appreciation to Dr Daniel Price and the Monash students. They were extremely engaging and the community loved what they saw. We hope that this might become an annual event.

Sentral Reporting System.

During the last week of this term we will be sending student reports home as usual.

As we are using a new provider, Sentral, these will look slightly different. We

believe they will be easier to read but still provide you with all the information about

your child’s progress against the Victorian Curriculum. Our Family Forums will

take place in the second we of next term. During the forum your child will have the

opportunity to proudly present aspects of their work and talk to you about their

learning at school. During these 15 minute meetings we ask that you encourage your

child to promote their confidence in their learning journey. If you need to discuss

something specific with your child’s teacher, please contact him or her.

Parking Concerns.

We continue to have a number of issues around parking. Given that our student

numbers have grown to 700, it is natural that parking requirements have increased.

As I mentioned in an earlier newsletter, I have met with Frankston Council,

Frankston High School and the Community Centre to investigate possible options to

improve this. However, nothing further has been offered. Last Friday at the

Principals’ network meeting, a member of Frankston Council spoke to us regarding

Kiss and Go parking areas. I expressed out continued concern of lack of monitoring

of these signs. We have all strongly requested that this be done. We have been as

proactive as we can be and increased our staff parking space to eliminate our impact.

However, unfortunately the school has no jurisdiction over street parking. So, I

strongly encourage community members to contact the Council on 1300322322 to

raise their concerns. This will be the only way that this can be addressed. In the

mean time, if you are close enough, please walk to school or consider parking at a

distance and then walking the rest of the way. We understand the frustrations but in

the interest of our student safety, we ask that you be patient with other drivers, and

obey all signage.

Kind Regards,

Julie Gleeson Principal.

Year Level Reminders for this week:

Foundation: School nurse visits start next week

Year 1: Don’t forget to bring your reader, home diary and magic word book everyday to school. Year one students use their work

books in reading groups as well as a resource when writing and spelling,

Year 2: Remember that having a Big Talk helps to make our Big Write even better!!! Try to remember each week.

Year 3: Please ensure that homework books are returned to school each and every day. These books form an important part of our

morning literacy block.

Year 4: Please continue to practice the times tables at home so we can see improvement in Blitz Master results.

Year 5: Thanks to everyone who came along to help us celebrate Science Day and open night. It was wonderful to see so many parents

and friends.

Year 6: Some tired little bodies need some early nights. Remember, sleep and good nutrition as we approach the colder months.

Assistant Principal’s Report

As Mrs Gleeson has already mentioned, we celebrated Education Week last week with a sensational Science Day and Open Night. Thank you to all those who came along and participated in these activities. It was a great night for our whole school community.

I had the pleasure of being with our Year 5 choir group when they performed at Karingal Hub shopping centre last week. Their performance was outstanding, with quite a crowd of shoppers gathering to watch. Well done to all choir members, and thank you to Mr David Freeman for arranging this opportunity for our students.

Two school policies: Curriculum and Communication have recently been reviewed by staff and Education Subcommittee, and were approved by School Council at our meeting this week. Both of these policies are now available on our website for you to familiarise yourself with.

Ritchie's Community Benefit card is a quick and easy way for our school to add to our fundraising. All that needs to happen is for you to present your ’Community Benefits’ card at the checkout each time you shop at Ritchies. If you don’t have a Community Benefit card, you can pick up a brochure at the Ritchies Towerhill store, and then just nominate Overport Primary School as the recipient of your donation. Periodically the school receives this donation, which to date this year is $664.00.

Our ‘Special Events’ group will be meeting next Thursday morning at 9.00am in the staffroom. Please come and join us. Everyone is welcome.

District Cross country: I was a week ahead of myself in our last newsletter! Our team competed last Friday 26th May (not 19th), in the District Cross Country at The Peninsula School and did an exceptional job. Mr Lukas’ words at assembly on Monday were that “ I have never been so proud of a group of students as I was last Friday”. They all did their very best, with three students now going on to the Divisional Cross Country competition next week. Congratulations, and best of luck to Matilda, Jhai and Xavier. We know you will represent Overport well. We will all be cheering for you!

Final payment for the Year 3 sleepover has been sent home today. All relevant medical forms have also been attached. We ask that you please return these to your classroom teacher by the end of this term.

Have a great weekend everyone,

Deborah Madder

Extend OSHC at Overport Primary School

WINTER HOLIDAY PROGRAM BOOKINGS ARE OPEN!

Book 14 days in advance to receive the lowest rate. Participate in our winter-themed activities, including science experiments to learn about animals with blubber, recreating a winter snowstorm in a jar, and participating in a snowman slam! To check out the daily schedule, visit our website at extend.com.au and book via the Parent Portal. Our weekly recap: Last week we had loads of fun playing lots of outside games, including soccer, netball, football and dodge ball. The highlight activity for the week was our end of week disco on Friday afternoon. We bought some cool glow in the dark dreadlock hair pieces to wear in the hall while we all boogied to the music! We also had lots of fun creating our own stress balls and dreamcatchers.

Brodie Dewhurst, Acting Team Leader

Our Extend Superstar is: Ethan … for becoming comfortable and involving himself in the program.

RACV Energy Breakthrough 2017

The RACV Energy Breakthrough competition preparation for 2017 has begun. This year we are very excited to have entered two pushcart teams and for the first time, a team in the human powered vehicle (HPV) event. The selection process for the three teams was difficult with many students vying for a place in the team.

Over the next 6 months, the teams of students in year four to six will train and prepare to compete in a three-day competition held in Maryborough in November. The event encompasses many areas of the curriculum including health, personal and social learning, science, technologies, reading, writing, speaking and listening and drama. Student knowledge, fitness and ability to work well in teams will tested at the competition in timed races, written displays and oral presentations.

The RACV competition relies solely on fundraising. We require funds to purchase safety equipment, uniforms and tools, to build the pushcarts and human powered vehicles and for team entry. We are fortunate this year to have very active parent group who are taking on large component of the fundraising efforts. A group of these parents were responsible for the organisation, cooking, selling and pack up of the RACV sausage sizzle at last Wednesday’s Open Night. I would like to thank all those who assisted, including Karen Thomson, Di Hall, Di Black, David Mackenzie, Sara and Scott Williams, Catherine Price, Melissa Gourley, Jacqui Miceli, Zoe Crean-Batty, Wendy Lorimer and Viktor Kuehn.

We continue to seek company sponsorship as an addition to fundraising efforts. If you know of any companies or individuals who may be willing and able to contribute to this amazing program, please encourage them to get in touch. We have a range of sponsorship packages available.

The RACV team are looking forward to a great year ahead.
