Principal’s Message

Dear Parents

National Secondary School Computer Fund (NSSCF)

I am very pleased to announce that, as part of the Federal Government NSSCF, the first roll out of Netbook computers will take place at the beginning of Term 3.

At this time, all students in Years 8 & 9 will be eligible to take part in this program. It will mean that students at these levels will be able to have 24/7 access to a new Netbook. However, to participate in this program, parents will be required to attend an information session at the College on how the program will work. Full details will be forwarded to all parents of Years 8 and 9 students in the near future.

The Netbook program will be made available to students in Years 7, 8 and 11 from the beginning of February 2012. This program will greatly enhance student learning and student access to the vast resources available on the internet. We are on the edge of a very exciting time in Secondary School education!

The Athletics Carnival, held on 25th May was an outstanding success. Each of the Sub Schools, Bulen Bulen, Gwonawa, Mirrim and Warin demonstrated enthusiastic team spirit and high levels of participation. Sub School Sport Captains Ife Ogidan, Mel Hunter, Matt Koulas and Fuarosa Tuitea put in a sterling effort to organise and motivate their teams. Uniform and Punctuality

Students are required to attend school in full uniform and get to school on time every day. Most students have no trouble complying with these very basic requirements. However, it is worth reminding our school community that ties are a compulsory part of the Winter uniform. Hoodies, non Kambrya College caps, beanies, facial piercings, nail polish and make up are not permitted to be worn at school. In order to get off to a smooth, organised start to the day, students should have a nutritious breakfast at home and be at school in full uniform by 8.50am. Students will then have 10 minutes to prepare for their first two lessons and arrive at class on time. I urge parents to continue to support the College and their children in these matters.

Friends of Ermera – Teacher Trip to East Timor

Kambrya Teachers Katie Mooney and Jane Mauger are travelling to East Timor in the July school holidays to participate in “Friends of Ermera‟s” first ever teachers tour. Friends of Ermera is a community group who provide assistance to the people of the District of Ermera in East Timor. This is aimed to further the relationships that exist between schools in the Ermera district and the Casey community.

As a part of this trip Kambrya is setting up a series of fundraising events to aid our sister school community in Letefoho (in the Ermera district of East Timor). For a country not far from our shores, life in East Timor is very different to the luxuries we enjoy in Australia. The schools have no electricity, class sizes range from 40 to 60 students in each class and students and teachers survive with very limited school supplies. The fundraising is aimed to improve this situation.

Donate a dictionary:

We are aiming to provide the school in Letefoho with 100 Tetun (East Timor Language) English Dictionaries – class sets for English language classes - these cost $3.00 each.

In order to raise this money we are asking for families to donate $3.00 (the price of one dictionary) at the front office and in return your name goes inside the front cover of one of the purchased dictionaries, as displayed below.

We thank you for your support. Jane Mauger & Katie Mooney

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

On Friday, 27 May, the staff at Kambrya College hosted Australia‟s Biggest Morning Tea to help raise money for the Cancer Council. A delectable spread was enjoyed by all. A raffle was drawn for two grand prizes which were donated by two of our wonderful local businesses, Gloria Jeans Berwick and Bemersyde Drive Bakery. Alan Feher and Melanie Hazle were the lucky winners. We are proud to have raised a total of $452. A huge thanks to everyone who was involved in such a wonderful morning, for such a good cause.

Kambrya College would like to express a HUGE thank you to Gloria Jeans Berwick/Karingal and Bemersyde Drive Bakery for their generous donations to help raise money for the Cancer Council (Australia‟s Biggest Morning Tea).

Year 11 - 20th Century History Excursion Jewish Holocaust

Centre, Elsternwick

On Thursday the 19th of May Ms Mauger and Ms Mooney‟s year 11 20th century History classes headed to the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Elsternwick to extend their knowledge of the persecution of minorities in Nazi Germany before and during World War II.

The highlight of the excursion was a talk given by Fred a Holocaust survivor. Fred told his story of survival and the students were given a chance to ask him questions about his experience in Auschwitz-Birkenau and the things he witnessed during the 1940‟s, while living in Hungary. Fred was one many Jewish survivors who made a new life in Australia.

Nadina Trepanic and Mackalaya Lampitt were chosen from several schools to be the candle lighters. The girls represented Kambrya College beautifully as they walked with Fred to light a candle of remembrance to the six million Jewish who perished in the Holocaust.

TECHNOLOGY News

FOOD, FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD!

Year 7 Food Technology students have been producing food from different sections of the Healthy Eating Pyramid. We have made food from the “eat most” and “eat moderately” sections of the pyramid. These have included vegetarian curry couscous; vegetable frittata; apple and rhubarb crumble; crumbed fish and hamburgers.

In the coming weeks we are making food from the “eat least” section of the pyramid. We will make sausage rolls and cup cakes. At the end of semester, students are able to take home their workbooks. You can then make favourite recipes for your family and friends at home.

*** REMINDERS:

Please remember to bring containers to take home your products for lessons.

We look forward to our Semester 2 students joining us shortly. Should any of these students need workbooks, they can now be purchased from the General Office for $9.00.

Year 9 Fast Food Journey students have been making pizza, hamburgers and sushi for the past few weeks. They have been investigating and designing ingredient ideas for these products. They have produced these items individually, and have evaluated the end products. We have seen some very creative designs. All students have enjoyed eating the foods produced.

*** REMINDERS:

As the end of semester is nearing, it is important for all students to ensure they have visual diaries ready for assessment.

NETWORKING IN IT

In Information Technology at the moment, the Year 11 students are creating their own networks and the Year 10 students are designing their own mobile device app. Both year levels will begin preparing for exams next week. It has been a fantastic term with so much creativity flowing in all classes.

WOOD TECHNOLOGY TREASURES

Our VCAL students have been filling us with pride this semester with the high quality of work they have produced. Some of the pieces being created are exceptionally detailed and well crafted.

After all the competitors had completed in javelin, shot putt, discus, long jump, high jump, triple jump and running events the results were in with Bulen Bulen taking top honours for 2011. Well done to all competitors from years 7 to 12 for their efforts and good luck to those going through to the next round. CAREERS News

THINKING „OUTSIDE THE SQUARE‟ AT AN INTERVIEW You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night. You pass by a bus stop, and see three people waiting for the bus: 1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die. 2. An old friend who once saved your life. 3. The perfect woman (or man) you have been dreaming about. Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car? You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first; or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect dream match again. The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. He simply answered: "I would give the car keys to my old friend, and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the woman of my dreams."
