Important Announcement As a member of the “Revised Superannuation Scheme” (which has not been available to new teachers for many years now) I have been advised that there are significant financial benefits to resign from my position just before turning 55 years of age. It is fairly common practice for “older” members of the teaching profession to take this option and then reapply for the position that they had vacated. It is with some trepidation that I take this option. Without doubt, the last three years where I have been Principal at Kambrya College, have been the very best in my professional life. I have been privileged to work with an exceptional Principal Team, (Nalini Naidu, Joanne Wastle, Fiona Foreman and John Shaw before Fiona) and the best Teaching and Educational Support staff that I have worked with in my thirty years plus in teaching. Together, we have notched up some very worthwhile achievements:

Our VCE study scores and NAPLAN results show that we have made outstanding improvement in the fundamental area of student learning.

We have developed a dynamic and diverse Leading Teacher team.

The four Vertical Sub schools have been implemented and have become part of our culture.

Student behaviour has improved markedly, both in and outside of the classroom.

Significant improvements have been made in the school yard – extensive seating, an excellent surface on soccer pitch and virtually litter free school grounds

Great strides have been taken to improve our administrative policies and business processes, including Program Budgets and fee collection.

Student leadership has been enhanced and programs to improve student, parent and community connectedness are in place.

The two court extension to the gymnasium is almost complete.

We have every reason to feel excited and optimistic about the future. With the progress made in establishing an orderly learning environment, more resources are now being directed towards supporting the teaching and learning program more broadly. The soon to be implemented 1:1 ICT learning environment will revolutionise student learning as over 1000 netbook computers are distributed to students from July. I have not taken the decision to take the 54/11 option lightly. I value and strongly believe in the achievements and improvements made at our College in recent times. My resignation will take place on 28 July and I leave the College in the safe hands of Nalini Naidu from that date as Acting Principal. I will then vigorously reapply for the position of Principal at Kambrya College when it is advertised. May I thank all parents and guardians for their ongoing support of the College and our students. Yours Sincerely Michael Muscat Principal

Exchange Student from the USA

Carli is loving living in Australia. The American 17 year-old attends Kambrya Secondary College. Carli has been in Australia since February, and has experienced Sydney during a 3 day intensive cultural immersion course put on by Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. She has been living in Berwick, and her host family are no longer able to host. We are therefore looking for a family to host Carli from July until late November 2011, when her program finishes. If you have considered hosting, now is the time. Carli is a bright student, and an active swimmer. Church and her youth group are also important to her. Southern Cross Cultural Exchange, a not-for-profit student exchange company operating nation-wide, is responsible for all of his travel expenses, insurance and school placement. We also provide 24 hour support for host families. Carli herself provides her own spending money, and is responsible for any school costs. If you are interested in getting more information about Carli, or any of the other nationalities we bring to Australia, please contact Claire Cummins at 1800 500 501 or [email protected].

MS READATHON 2011 – KAMBRYA IN TOP 100!!!

The Kambrya College school library has run the annual fundraiser for the MS Readathon in Terms 2 and 3 this year. The library is extremely proud and delighted to announce that we are in the top 100 fundraisers in the state for the MS Readathon!! With only seven students in the program, the main contributor to these efforts has been Matthew Harper-Gomm of G7A.

Matthew has raised over $1500 for the MS Readathon. Matthew‟s fundraising stands out because we have never before had a student raise so much money on their own for any cause! He has worked extremely hard, going out every night after school to ask local businesses, residents, friends and family members for donations. When students were given one sheet to fill-in with donations, he managed to fill in over 15!!! Kambrya College is extremely proud of his initiative and effort. Matthew has been nominated for one of the top Principal‟s Awards and our Library Student Award. Keep your eye out for his picture and an article about his efforts in the local Leader newspaper coming out soon.

We would like to thank all of the students pictured below for taking part in the program and for their efforts in raising money for such a worthy cause! Well done! LUNCHTIME ACTIVITIES PROGRAM The 2011 Lunchtime Activities was a huge success for the first half of the year (Semester 1). Without the dedication of our teachers who so kindly give up their free time to run these clubs, our program would not be a success. On Friday last week, a thank you lunch was held for the staff who contributed to the program in Term 2. Not all teachers were able to attend as they were out on excursion or running their activity on this day!!! All students are encouraged to attend lunchtime clubs and academic help sessions. Students should refer to the B1 noticeboard for all activities on offer before school, at lunchtime and after school.
