What does the Bible say about Church Planting?


John 20:21Again Jesus said,

“Peace be with you!As the Father has sent me,

I am sending you.”


Acts 8:1b-4a1On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2Godly men

buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison. 4

Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.


Acts 9:1aMeanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats

against the Lord’s disciples.


Acts 13:1-3In the church at Antioch there were prophets and

teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called

them.” 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

The vigorous, continual planting of new congregations is the single most crucial strategy for 1) the numerical growth of the Body of Christ in any city, and 2) the continual corporate renewal and revival of the existing

churches in a city. Nothing else--not crusades, outreach programs, para-church ministries, growing mega-

churches, congregational consulting, nor church renewal processes--will

have the consistent impact of dynamic, extensive church planting. This is an eyebrow raising statement.

But to those who have done any study at all,

it is not even controversial.
