Schools, classes and individuals are once again invited to compete in another excit-ing and educational SA Maths Challenge due to take place on the 26 to 27 Septem-ber.

The challenge, which is free to all learners from Grade R right through to grade 12, en-ables anybody to take part in real time maths challenges powered by the Mathletics plat-form. Here they can put their best mental arithmetic skills against other students from around the world. Not only will the top per-formers go into the selection process to be-come Ambassadors of the World Education Games 2012, but with Standard Bank as a main sponsor there are lots of other exciting prizes up for grabs for the top performers in each category. The challenge is run in conjunction with 3P Learning, the founders of World Maths Day, and encourages learners from all over the country to practice hard to break the South African record for the largest online maths competition in the country. Rob Masefield, SA General Manager for 3P Learning says that in line with the goals of our education

departments, this challenge is an ideal way for teachers to inspire students by letting them do something different with Maths. “The competition is very popular as it en-courages students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to have a go at maths in a fun, interactive and accessible way and at a level which is suited to their varying ability levels. They can improve the speed and accuracy of their maths in a fun interactive manner. Best of all participation in the competition is free – all students need is internet access,” says Masefield. Schools will need to register before 25 Sep-tember. There are two distinct stages. Each day starts at 8 am and runs until 11pm that night. There is a free practice session for learners from 21 to 25 September allow-ing them the opportunity to hone their skills before the big event. Learners and teachers can go to www.samathschallenge.co.za to register and take part. The first day, is a Curriculum Maths Chal-lenge where students are set a special chal-lenge curriculum course,. “This tests the students’ knowledge of Maths concepts, “says Masefield. The second day is where

the fun really starts and here students can compete in a live maths challenge. In sets of 60 seconds they play mental arithmetic with other students across South Africa. “Not only does this test their concept knowledge but also their speed,” says Masefield.

Masefield confirms that students already li-censed for Mathletics or Spellodrome need not register and can automatically partici-pate in the challenge by signing in to www.samathschallenge.co.za and using their existing user name and password.

KLERKSDORP - Children from the SAVF Rethabile Child and Youth Care in Klerksdorp, as well as a few lucky Scoot-ers Pizza customers, had the opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled and entertaining day when Scooters Pizza Klerksdorp treated them to a viewing of the movie Zookeeper,

on 28 August at the City Mall in town. 30 Children between the ages of 7 to 13 from the SAVF Rethabile Child and Youth Care, 85 loyal customers from Scooters Pizza Klerksdorp as well as Scooters Pizza staff and their children joined in on the day’s festivities.

Each child that participated in the outing re-ceived a pizza surprise box, which consist-ed of various fun items such as a Scooters Pizza pen, coloring activities, a balloon and a few sweets which kept them entertained and happy. Scooters Pizza Klerksdorp owner, Jonathan

Dineen says that the outing helped realise several positive outcomes. “This outing not only gave the children from SAVF Rethabile Child and Youth Care the opportunity to experience a movie on the big screen, but also ensured that our loyal customers and staff are rewarded as

well. Importantly, it also helped build bet-ter relations, as it allowed our staff and their children to interact with our customers and the community on a personal level.” Christo Calitz, CEO of Taste Holdings Food Division, concludes that the outing forms part of Scooters Pizza’s commitment to both its customers and communities. “Ensuring that we give back to both our cus-tomers and the communities we work in is a crucial ethos of our businesses, and outings such as the one being provided by Scooters Pizza Klerksdorp offer the perfect opportu-nity to realize this objective. In February this year Nedbank shared its in-depth strategic plans for charting a new path to sustainable, profitable growth for its retail business. “Our chosen direction harnesses Nedbank’s unique attributes to deliver a choice of distinctive client-cen-tred banking experiences as a bank for all in South Africa,” says Ingrid Johnson, Nedbank Group Managing Executive of Retail and Business Banking. “This entails focusing on key client seg-

ments including small business, seniors and the middle market where Nedbank has his-torically been strong, while also emphasis-ing attractive growth segments namely en-try level banking and the youth.” Johnson states, “By understanding our cli-ents’ aspirations and financial goals, we can make things happen with distinctive offer-ings for each client segment such as Ned-bank Savvy aimed at the aspirant middle market and the Nedbank Retail Savings Bond aimed at seniors. On these offerings we have seen a great response in line with expectations and have enhanced our clients banking experience.” “Our client-centred approach, underpinned by world class risk management practices, ensures that clients choose the products, services and banking experiences that are most suited to their needs and through car-ing about our clients’ financial fitness, em-power our clients to make their money work

better for them.” Nedbank continues to engage with the entry level market since the launch of the Mzansi account in 2005, of which Nedbank holds the second largest client-base. Perceptions of Nedbank’s brand position-ing have shifted markedly from elitist to aspirational and this resonates with the growing South African banking consumer market that has aspirations to realise their full potential and financial goals. We cur-rently have over 3 million entry level bank-ing clients including the youth, and continue to gain momentum in this segment,” adds Johnson. “We introduced the ‘KeYona’ Better Life Line Up during the Nedbank Cup earlier this year. This offering comprises the money transfer solution Vodacom m-pesa, Pay-as-you-use banking account, Funeral Cover and Personal Loan Account, enabling cli-ents to transact, borrow, save and insure in an affordable manner through our extensive footprint,” says Ciko Thomas; Managing Executive of Consumer Banking. With the current market conditions consum-ers are facing increased challenges in man-aging their finances. They are faced with various rising price pressures in their daily purchases of food, fuel, transport, electricity and water. The Nedbank ‘KeYona’ offering is tailor made to serve the needs of this mar-ket, helping them to manage their finances

on a day to day basis from the smallest amount, so as to build financial fitness over a period of time. “We want our clients to know that we have empathy for them and understand just how difficult it can be for them to manage their money wisely. We acknowledge the inher-ent and common wish for a better life and the important role that we can play in mak-ing things happen by empowering them with the necessary knowledge, tools and of-ferings,” states Thomas. This weekend saw the launch of the Ned-bank ‘KeYona’ marketing campaign portray-ing the daily lives of people in South Africa making things happen for themselves, and their realising the possibilities of enhancing their lives by banking with Nedbank, who cares about their financial wellbeing. The campaign stars Zolani Mahola of Fresh-lyground who is joined by two aspiring ac-tors, Mpho Pitini who plays a Nurse and Mi-chael Mabizela who plays a shop assistant. In an effort to connect with all in South Af-rica, Mpho and Michael deliver their mes-sages in their home language – Sesotho and isiZulu respectively. Nedbank “KeYona” can be easily accessed through over 1,000 staffed outlets as Ned-bank continues to grow its foot print across South Africa with accessibility in communi-ties it was previously not represented such as Ngqeleni, Centane, Acornhoek, Idutywa,

Diepsloot and Thohoyandou. In addition, Nedbank has invested in build-ing its innovative, alternate distribution outlets through its partnership with Pick n Pay and Boxer Stores for the past six years. These alternative outlets now at 148, add to the existing network of 455 branches and 429 Nedbank Personal Loan Kiosks, which include Nedbank presence in Cash Build and Build-It as well as the Nedbank Mobile Sales teams in communities. Johnson notes “In addition to the alter-nate outlets, since November 2010 we have tested client and our employee reaction to Sunday banking and have been piloting extended hours with union consent. I’m delighted that we’ll now be opening even more branches for extended hours, includ-ing Sundays, from mid-July based on the needs of our communities.” This extensive footprint (including retail-ers) ensures that clients have access to cash at point of sale and can bank and apply for the Nedbank ‘KeYona’ offering – every day of the week, including Sundays and public holidays. “Our latest Nedbank ‘KeYona’ campaign enhances Nedbank’s brand accessibility and communicates our mission to make an enduring difference to all who bank with Nedbank in a way that enables our clients to reach their aspirations and financial goals,” concludes Johnson.

Nedbank continues to make things happen for all the people in South Africa

MAHIKENG - It is a fact that we are faced with a serious challenge of illegal dumping of waste that is not properly managed and we do not have the urge to waste as a resource that can create jobs

and contribute to the growth of the eco-nomy in our province. Waste is a monster that is created by us, and it is us, who should manage it, said MEC Boitumelo Tshwene addressing public ser-

vants and community members at the launch of Green Friday that was held in Mahikeng last week Friday. The green Friday campaign led by MEC for Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Boitumelo Tshwene on be-half of Premier Thandi Modise and MEC Tebogo Modise launched the Green Friday campaign as part of the creating awareness among communities, businesses and pri-vate sector on climate change issues which include, amongst others, keeping environ-ment clean, saving energy as well as using lift clubs to reduce emissions. North West University students, Youth in Agricultural Development, community members, EPWP workers and public ser-vants, all wearing green overalls as a sign of green economy and renewable energy, embarked on cleaning campaign at ille-gal dumping site along Dr. Albert Luthuli Drive, and later proceeded to Ga-Rona Building where MEC’s addressed citizens on the green Friday initiative and then con-duct a ceremonial switching off of lights at Ga-Rona building as part of government’s contribution towards energy saving. The Green Friday initiative under the theme of “Working together, Save Tomor-row, Today”, emanates from the North West Climate Change Summit that took place from 31st August to 02nd September 2011 in Rustenburg. MEC Tebogo Modise urged the municipal-ity to keep their commitment of regularly collecting waste from households and busi-nesses, failure in doing so, community gets attracted to start creating illegal dumpsites and fills which contaminates the environ-ment and atmosphere. “Recycling is another way of creating jobs for our people. We need to start emphasising

culture of recycling, in this way we will cre-ate job opportunities, and most importantly we will reduce the impact on the environ-ment”, said MEC Tshwene. He further highlighted that there are ini-tiatives in the province to recycle glass, aluminium cans, paper and plastics. These initiatives can benefit a lot from receiving sorted waste from households and busi-nesses. In this way SMME’s will be more willing to come and collect from house-holds and business premises, because waste is actually a resource to them. “Today we say no to illegal dumping and yes to recycling and proper waste disposal at permitted landfill sites, we have planted trees to rehabilitate this piece of land, now we urge you to look after these trees, “said MEC Tshwene. MEC Tebogo Modise urged members of the community to start being conscious of issues concerning climate change, because it is a fact that frequent Green House Gases production is linked to energy usage. The energy is then again used by industry to ge-nerate products like cars, washing machines or services. All these industries create jobs, which can lead to the province doing well economically.“As a province we need to change our at-titudes towards dumping waste illegally, let us stop cutting trees but rather plant more trees to get oxygen for us, our animals and for vegetation”, said MEC Modise. Cllr Lenah Miga, Major of Mafikeng Local Municipality pledged to the delegation and the community that, with the help of Munic-ipal workers and the EPWP programme, the Municipality will put more effort to try and change the perception that people outside has about Mafikeng as it is known badly about potholes and filthiness.
