Location

• The Monchiero Carbone winery is located in Canale, in the heart of the Roero hills

• The village of Canale in Roero is located to the North and west of Barolo and Barbaresco, land separated by the Tanaro River.

• Situated in south Piedmont, the hills of the Roero are bordered to the west by a great plain, to the north-east by the hills of the Monferrato, and across the River Tanaro to the south by the Langa.

• The name derives from the Counts who ruled the area from the late Middle Ages until the 1700s.

Roero Arneis DOCG• Roero is located north of Barolo and Barbaresco, which is separated by the Tanaro River• The soil in Roero is mostly sandy, and rich in silt and magnesium (important for perfumes and

aromas in white wines)• Arneis is the most important grape, but Barbera and Nebbiolo are also well represented• The Roero Arneis DOCG requires 100% Arneis and solely from the Roero Region• Arneis Langhe DOC can be produced from grapes sourced from both Roero and Langhe and has to

be at least 85% Arneis

History• The Monchiero Carbone family winemaking dates back to 1918. • The inspiration behind the Monchiero Carbone winery can be traced back to the generations of both

families who earned their livelihood as vine-growers. • The MonBirone vineyard was purchased by Clotilde Valente, on the maternal Monchiero side, with

her dowry to keep her busy while her husband fought the Great War. • Also during the early 1900s, Ricù, a nickname for Enrico Carbone, married Lucia Gioetti, “the blonde”,

who brought with her enough dowry to purchase land where they immediately planted Arneis. • The union of Marco Monchiero and Lucetta Carbone brought them back to their home town in the

heart of the Roero in the late eighties. It was then that they decided to revive their family vineyards and start a winery.

History

• The Monchiero Carbone winery was established in 1990 by Marco and Lucetta Carbone, aided and abetted by their son Francesco.

• Later it was Francesco Carbone, known as Cecu d'la Biunda - son of Ricu and "the Blonde" -, who transmitted to his grandson Francesco Monchiero this feeling of pride and belonging to country values.

• Today it is owned and operated by husband and wife, Francesco and Lucrezia Monchiero

• Specialize in creating Arneis from the best vineyards in the Roero zone.

• On the label, the Monchieros have added the phrase “Ogni uss a l’ha so tanbuss” – “Every door has its knocker.”

The Vineyards

• Two historical vineyards which comprise the foundation of the Monchiero Carbone estate are located within the Canale area: – Monbirone - hard and limey almost chalky soil, where mere drops of water

cause the ground to become as slippery as soap– Tanon - light and dry, sandy soil, which seems almost specifically designed to

showcase the fragrance and appeal of Arneis.

• Recently added to the estate are young vineyards in the Priocca area, located closer to the Tanaro River.

Philosophy

• The Monchiero Carbone philosophy is to respect the origins of the land, cherishing its well-being to provide their vines with the correct natural nourishment, ultimately allowing them to yield just the right amount of well-concentrated fruit.

• While Arneis is the hallmark of the Monchiero Carbone winery, high quality Barbera and Nebbiolo are produced here as well.
