Notes for Filippo (Phillip) (Guerrieri) Guerrie:

The original Guerrieri name was used after Filippo's first Immigration into the United States then changed to GUERRIE In about 1921 in Grand Junction, Colorado. A 5th GradeTeacher named Mrs. Riddle suggested to Edythe Guerrie that they shorten the name to Guerrie. We found no record of the Official change in the Mesa County records so we


assume that the families just started using the name Guerrie.

The name was spelled "GUERRIERi" on the Birth Certificate of Filippo and also on the 1907 Ship Manifests when he brought Raffaela to the US. The spelling "GUERRIERI" should be used in the research of the Ellis Island Records and Castle Garden Immigration Center from (1820 to 1913) and other research Web Sites. It appears that they started using the GUERRIERI spelling soon after their immigrations around 1900 to 1907.

Note: Italian handwriting used on the Birth Certificae of Filippo resembled an "o" on the end of the name but was actually an "i". The example was shown in "A Genealogist's Guide to Discovering your Italian Ancestors" by Lynn Nelson published 1997. (Italian Handwriting) Section A.

Filippo married his first wife Rosaria Gabriele Fiorello 4 August 1886 and had one child, Frances born 17 July 1899. Rosaria did not immigrate to the US and died about 1904 in Italy leaving her Daughter Frances with family in Rogliano, Italy. In 1906 Phillip was encouraged by his brother Vincent James to go back to Italy and get his daughter and bring her to the US. When Filippo returned to Italy he met Raffaela Altomare and they came to the United States through Ellis Island on the SS Hamburg on 6-9-1907 from the Port of Naples and was listed on the manifest Page 0112 lines 13-14-15.

The ships Passenger Record lists his name as Filippo GUERRIERO age 41 and her name as Raffaele (Altiman) Altimari age 23, with his daughter Frances age 8. (Frances was listed as his son Francisco age 8.)

Raffaela used her maiden name Altomare on this record. She was pregnant with their first son Alexander, who was born in Grand Junction in December of 1907 after their June arrival. They married in Italy before the immigration, and the Ships Manifest shows both were married. (Researchers say that it was not uncommon for Italian women to immigrate using their Family Surname and not their married name).

The ships manifest was transcribed incorrectly by the Ellis Island researchers as follows:His name was written Filippo Guerrieri but transcribed by the Ellis Island researchers as Fillipo.Her name was written Raffaele Altomare but transcribed as Altiman. Correct spelling is Altomare.His daughter Frances age 8 was listed as his Son Francisco age 8.Raffaela and Frances listed their last residence as Rogliano, Italy.

Notes for Raffaela Concetta Altomare:

Her name also shows as "Raphaela" on the Birth Certificate of her first son Alexander which may have been a misspelling. She was the 2nd Wife of Phillips and they met when he went back to Grimaldi, Cosenza, Calabria, Italy in 1906 to get his daughter Frances from his first marriage. They met since the Altomare Family was taking care of Frances. The Altomare's were from Rogliano, Italy near Grimaldi.

Spelling of her first name on some records include, Rafaelina=Raphaela=Raffaela=Raffaele

They were married and stayed in Grimaldi or Rogliano about 3 months and arrived in the United States in June 1907 bringing Frances with them. She was pregnant with Alexander and he was born in December 1907 in Grand Junction.


She told her daughter Edythe that she was not in love with Phillip and married him to escape the poverty in Italy, however she did come to love him as the years went on.

She baked and sold bread which she baked in an outside oven for additional income. She also worked in the Kuners tomato canning plant in Grand Junction.

She moved to Los Angeles California in 1949 after her brother Frank Altomare’s death and worked with her daughters Edythe and Leonora in their sewing shops as a seamstress until her death.

Notes for Joseph Guerrie:

Joe suffered from what was deemed to be Tuberculosis of the bone in one of his legs. Discussing this with Vivian ( his sister) we wonder if he may have had Beckers Muscular Dystrophy also. She doesn’t remember any discussions about this problem other than when he became sick they took him out of the house on a chair to the hospital where he died at age 17. He was a Senior at Grand Jct. High School.Beckers is known to be in the Altomare blood line passed from Mothers to Sons.Death Notes:Cancer of the bone.

Charles Francis Guerrie was born December 29, 1913 at Grand Junction, son of Vincent J. and Angelina Guerrie. The mother died December 1, 1919, and the father December 8, 1946.Sergeant Guerrie received his schooling and spent his boyhood in Grand Junction, graduating from High school in 1933. Until entering service, he owned and operated a restaurant and lounge in Los Angeles. He volunteered for Army service in April 1942 and received training at Camp Davis and Fort Bragg, N.C., Camp McCoy, Wis and Fort Dix. NJ

He went overseas March 1, 1943 and served in Africa, Italy and France. He died at Marseilles, France July 1, 1945 in a motor vehicle accident and was interred temporarily at Lynnes.

Surviving are his two brother, Frank of Helper, Utah and Tony 1258 Colorado Ave. three sister, Mrs.Thomas Migliaccio, Helper, Mrs Howard McCord, 211 Hale Ave and Mrs. Fred Swem, Long Beach, CA and aunt Mrs. Lillian Guerrie, and an uncle Frank Altimaro 237 Pitkin Ave.

"Lee" worked the D&RG Railroad but his love was really in Farming. He farmed the 20 acres owned by Evalina's Mother in Clifton, Colorado with Peaches, Pears, Grapes, Apples and crops of Alfalfa and Corn to feed the Livestock. All this was done while he maintained his job on the Denver &Rio Grande Railroad.Mom and Dad bought a 10 acre farm @ 3021 E1/2 Road in Grand Junction and the family moved there in about 1944 or 45. There was a Pear Orchard but mostly open ground. Dad grew Vegetables, Alfalfa, Wheat, and later put in a large Peony garden from which he sold flowers. He later planted a Vineyard with various varieties but mostly Concords. He was one of the early farmers that supported the early wine making activities in Mesa County and counciled some of the early Winery Developers in the Palisade area. He and his son Raymond made wine every year from the Concord Grapes produced from the vineyard which they gave to friends and relatives to enjoy. Dad's real love was farming and growing crops. in his later years he nurtured his Vineyard and Peony's. Some of his original Grape & Peony plants were taken from the old farm by his youngest son Ernest who still grows peony's for sale and grapes for his own use.

Lee hosted a family gathering every summer at his home with food, drinks etc. It was always well attended and the sisters from California usually visited Grand Jct. every couple of years and was a way for all of the extended family to meet and visit. The tradition was taken on by his children after the parents deaths, however with changing times and separation of family descendants, only one or two events were held, the last one in the early 1990's.Death Notes:Lung Cancer/ Smoker

Accompany him was County Nurse Fairy Ryan and the child's mother. The resuscitator-inhalator of the fire department was taken along, as well as a tank of oxygen. The child will be taken to Colorado General Hospital, arrangements having been made by the Mesa County Polio Committee.The child's father is a fireman on the Denver and Rio Grande. The youth has been ill since Sunday and was removed to St. Mary's hospital early today.

His death is the first Mesa County child fatality from the disease this year.

The body is to be brought to Grand Junction for funeral services and burial, with the Martin Mortuary in charge of arrangements.The city fire department resuscitator-inhalator was used during the ambulance trip to Denver, and the child was placed in an iron lung immediately upon arrival at the hospital yesterday afternoon. The mother and Mrs. Fairy Ryhan, county nurse accompanied the boy. The father went by plane later in the day.
