CIHR’s mandate is to “excel, according to internationally

accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of

new knowledge and its translation into improved health for

Canadians, more effective health services and products and a

strengthened Canadian health care system.”

CIHR

Ongoing Reforms at CIHRCIHR has been going through major reforms of funding programs. As a result, many programs will be phased out soon. Two new programs will be the main funding mechanisms for CIHR researchers.

CIHR

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

NSERC aims to make Canada a country of discoverers and

innovators for the benefit of all Canadians. The agency

supports university students in their advanced studies,

promotes and supports discovery research, and fosters

innovation by encouraging Canadian companies to participate

and invest in postsecondary research projects. NSERC

researchers are on the vanguard of science, building on

Canada’s long tradition of scientific excellence.

NSERC

Discovery Grants & Supplements ProgramObjective • Discovery Grants (DG) form the basis of an ongoing

research programs with long-term goals, rather than a short-term project or collection of project

• Supplement to Discovery Grants (Discovery Accelerator Supplements Program (DAS) provides substantial and timely additional resources to accelerate progress and maximize the impact of superior Discovery Grants research program

Duration DG- Up to 5 yearsDAS – 3 years

Funding DG -No restriction, but realistically $30,000/yearDAS - $40,000/year

Post-awardspecifics

DG - Automatic Extension Period (1 year) DAS - Automatic Extension Period (1 year)

NSERC

Research Tools & Instruments ProgramObjective • The RTI program provides the primary avenue for

university researchers in NSE to obtain up to $150,000 in support for research tools and instruments with a net cost between $7,001 and $250,000

• subject to McGill internal pre-selection due to a quota imposed by NS

Duration 1 year

Funding Up to $150,000

Post-awardspecifics

Automatic Extension Period (1 year) Matching funds are required to cover the costs for RTI between $150,000 and $250,000

NSERC

NSERC Partnership Projects • Require industrial participation:

• Canadian-based company that can apply the research results in a way that generates wealth or employment (organizations without Canadian R&D or manufacturing operations will not be considered)

• collaborates in all stages of the research project, i.e., helps to develop the proposal and, as the project unfolds, interacts regularly with the academic researchers, students and other research personnel and provides input on the project; and

• validates the results of the research and/or provides guidance concerning the exploitation of the results

NSERC

Engage GrantsObjective • foster the development of new research partnerships by

supporting short-term research and development projects aimed at addressing a company-specific problem

• no existing or past relationship between the researcher applying for funding and the company with a problem to be addressed through the project

Duration Up to 6 months

Funding Up to $25,000

Post-awardspecifics

• Publications and conferences are eligible in exceptional cases only, where evidence is provided that they are industry-oriented and they represent the only appropriate media to ensure the technology is transferred to the industrial partner.

• Office supply expenses are limited to $250• Extension needs to be requested from agency

NSERC

Strategic Project (SP) Grants Objective • fund early-stage project research in targeted areas

(Target areas to be re-defined for the 2016 competition)• at least one academic researcher and at least one

supporting organization must collaborate in the project• the supporting organization must be actively involved in

all stages of the project; therefore, in-kind contributions are required, but cash is not

Duration up to 3 years

Funding no upper limit: but estimated average $160,000

Post-awardspecifics

• During the 2nd year of the project, PI must submit a progress report and supporting organization(s) will provide feedback. The final installment will be paid only if satisfactory progress and collaboration with the supporting organization(s) have been demonstrated

• Extension needs to be requested from agency

NSERC

Collaborative Research & Development(CRD) GrantsObjective • fund university researchers and their private-sector

partners on focused projects with specific short- to medium-term objectives, and discrete phases in a program of longer-range research

• direct project costs are shared by industry and NSERC.NSERC matches industry’s cash and in-kind (in-kind up to the industrial cash contribution after McGill overhead)

• research agreements need to be negotiated

Duration up to 5 years

Funding Normally limited to $500,000 from NSERC per project

Post-awardspecifics

• CRD projects are monitored closely: the next instalment will not be released until the industry’s current contribution is made, the commitment to the next year is re-confirmed, and an evaluation of the project’s progress is provided.

• extension needs to be requested from agency

NSERC

Idea to Innovation (I2I) GrantsObjective • accelerate the pre-competitive development of

promising technology originating from the university and college sector and promote its transfer to a new or established Canadian company

• support research and development projects with recognized technology transfer potential through defined phases form the early stages of technology validation

Duration Market Assessment – up to one yearPhase I – up to one yearPhase IIa – from 6 to 18 months; Phase IIb – up to two years
