There is much that you can do to protectyourself when you ride. You’ll find manyhelpful recommendations throughout thismanual. Following are a few that weconsider to be most important.

Alcohol and riding don’t mix. Even onedrink can reduce your ability to respond tochanging conditions, and your reaction timegets worse with every additional drink. Sodon’t drink and ride, and don’t let yourfriends drink and ride either.

It’s a proven fact: helmets significantlyreduce the number and severity of headinjuries. So always wear an approvedmotorcycle helmet and make sure yourpassenger does the same. We alsorecommend that you wear eye protection, sturdy boots, gloves, and other protectivegear (page ).

Your motorcycle can provide many years ofservice and pleasure if you takeresponsibility for your own safety andunderstand the challenges that you canmeet on-road and off-road.

Some drivers do not see motorcyclesbecause they are not looking for them. Tomake yourself more visible, wear brightreflective clothing, position yourself soother drivers can see you, signal beforeturning or changing lanes, and use yourhorn when it will help others notice you.

The terrain can present a variety ofchallenges when you ride of f -road.Continually ‘‘read’’ the terrain f orunexpected turns, drop-offs, rocks, ruts, andother hazards. Always keep your speed lowenough to allow time to see and react tohazards.

Pushing the limits is another major cause ofmotorcycle accident both on-road and off.Never ride beyond your personal abilities orfaster than conditions warrant. Rememberthat alcohol, drugs, fatigue and inattentioncan significantly reduce your ability to makegood judgements and ride safely.

For safe riding, it’s important to keep yourmotorcycle properly maintained. Having abreakdown can be difficult, especially if youare stranded off-road far from your base. Tohelp avoid problems, inspect yourmotorcycle before every ride and performall recommended maintenance. Neverexceed load limits, and use only accessoriesthat have been approved by Honda for thismotorcycle. See page for more details.5

Your helmet is your most important piece ofriding gear because it offers the bestprotection against head injuries. A helmetshould fit your head comfortably andsecurely. A bright-coloured helmet canmake you more noticeable in traffic, as canreflective strips.

An open-face helmet offers some protection, but a full-face helmet offers more. Alwayswear a face shield or goggles to protectyour eyes and help your vision.

This motorcycle has a hydraulic front discbrake. As the brake pads wear, brake fluid leveldrops. There are no adjustments to perform, butfluid level and pad wear must be inspectedperiodically. The system must be inspectedfrequently to ensure there are no fluid leaks. If the brake lever free travel becomesexcessive and the brake pads are not wornbeyond the recommended limit (page ),there is probably air in the brake systemand it must be bled. See your dealer for thisservice.

If ‘‘spark knock’’ or ‘‘pinking’’ occurs at asteady engine speed under normal load, change brands of petrol. If spark knock orpinking persists, consult your dealer.Failure to do so is considered misuse, anddamage caused by misuse is not covered byHonda’s Limited Warranty.

Occasionally you may experience lightspark knock while operating under heavyloads. This is no cause for concern, it simplymeans your engine is operating efficiently.

Use unleaded petrol with a research octanenumber of 91 or higher.

Before buying fuel from an unfamiliarstation, try to find out if the fuel containsalcohol. If it does, confirm the type andpercentage of alcohol used. If you noticeany undesirable operating symptoms whileusing a petrol that contains alcohol, or onethat you think contains alcohol, switch to apetrol that you know does not containalcohol.

The use of petrol containing more than 10 %ethanol (or more than 5 % methanol) may:

Damage the painting of the fuel tank.Damage the rubber tubes of the fuel line.Cause corrosion of the fuel tank.Cause poor drivability.

If you decide to use a petrol containingalcohol (gasohol), be sure it’s octane ratingis at least as high as that recommended byHonda. There are two types of ‘‘gasohol’’:one containing ethanol, and the othercontaining methanol. Do not use petrol thatcontains more than 10 % ethanol. Do not usepetrol containing methanol (methyl or woodalcohol) that does not also containcosolvents and corrosion inhibitors formethanol. Never use petrol containing morethan 5 % methanol, even if it has cosolventsand corrosion inhibitors.

To safely operate your motorcycle, the tyresmust be the proper type (off-road) and size,in good condition with adequate tread, andcorrectly inflated.

Properly inflated tyres provide the bestcombination of handling, tread life, andriding comfort. Generally, underinflatedtyres wear unevenly, adversely affecthandling, and are more likely to fail frombeing overheated. Underinflated tyres canalso cause wheel damage in rocky terrain.Overinflated tyres make your motorcycleride harshly, are more prone to damagefrom surface hazards, and wear unevenly.

Make sure the valve stem caps are secure. If necessary, install new caps.

Air PressureTYRES

38

Using tyres that are excessively wornor improperly inflated can cause acrash in which you can be seriouslyhurt or killed.

Follow all instructions in this owner’smanual regarding tyre inflation andmaintenance.

Do not downshift when traveling at aspeed that would force the engine tooverrev in the next lower gear; the rearwheel may lose traction, resulting in apossible loss of vehicle control.Do not shift gears without disengagingthe clutch and closing the throttle. Theengine and drive train could be damagedby overspeed and shock.Do not tow the motorcycle or coast forlong distances while the engine is off.The transmission will not be properlylubricated and damage may result.Do not run the engine at high rpm withthe transmission in neutral or the clutchlever pulled in. Serious engine damagemay result.

Coordinate the throttle and brakes forsmooth deceleration. Both front and rear brakes should beused at the same time and should not beapplied strongly enough to lock the wheel,or braking effectiveness will be reducedand control of the motorcycle be difficult.

Raise the shift lever to shift to a highergear and depress the shift lever to shift toa lower gear. Each stroke of the shiftlever engages the next gear in sequence. The shift lever automatically returns tothe horizontal position when released.

Riding with your foot resting on thebrake pedal or your hand on the brakelever may actuate the brakelight, giving afalse indication to other drivers. It mayalso overheat the brakes, reducingeffectiveness.

Important Safety Reminders: When descending a long, steep grade, use engine compression braking by down-shifting, with intermittent use of bothbrakes.Continuous brake application canoverheat the brakes and reduce theireffectiveness.

Independent operation of only the brakelever or brake pedal reduces stoppingperformance.Extreme application of the brake controlsmay cause wheel lock, reducing control ofthe motorcycle. When possible, reduce speed or brakebefore entering a turn; closing thethrottle or braking in mid-turn may causewheel slip. Wheel slip will reduce controlof the motorcycle. When riding in wet or rainy conditions, oron loose surfaces, the ability to maneuverand stop will be reduced. All of youractions should be smooth under theseconditions. Rapid acceleration, braking orturning may cause loss of control. Foryour safety, exercise extreme cautionwhen braking, accelerating or turning.

Changing the oil requires a torque wrench. If you do not have it and the necessary skill,we recommend that you have your dealerperform this service.

Change the engine oil with the engine atnormal operating temperature and themotorcycle on its center stand to assurecomplete and rapid draining.

Used engine oil may cause skin cancer ifrepeatedly left in contact with the skin forprolonged periods. Although this is unlikelyunless you handle used oil on a daily basis,it is still advisable to thoroughly wash yourhands with soap and water as soon as possi-ble after handling used oil.

Please dispose of used engine oil in amanner that is compatible with theenvironment. We suggest you take it in asealed container to your local recyclingcenter or service station for reclamation. Donot throw it in the trash or pour it on theground or down a drain.

If a torque wrench is not used for thisinstallation, see your dealer as soon aspossible to verify proper assembly.

Engine oil quality is the chief factoraffecting engine service life. Change theengine oil as specified in the maintenanceschedule (page ).When running in very dusty conditions, oilchanges should be performed moref r equent ly t han spec i f i ed in t hemaintenance schedule.

Check slack in the lower drive chain runmidway between the sprockets.Drive chain slack should be adjusted toallow the following vertical movement byhand:

Inspection:Turn the engine off, raise the rear wheeloff the ground by placing a support underthe engine, and shift the transmissioninto neutral.

Rotate the rear wheel. Stop. Check thedrive chain slack. Repeat this procedureseveral times. Drive chain slack shouldremain constant. If the chain is slack onlyin certain sections, some links are kinkedand binding. Binding and kinking canfrequently be eliminated by lubrication.

Excessive chain slack may allow the drivechain to damage the engine cases.

The service life of the drive chain ( ) isdependent upon proper lubrication andadjustment. Poor maintenance can causepremature wear or damage to the drivechain and sprockets. The drive chain should be checked, adjusted and lubricated as part of the Pre-ride Inspection (page ). Under severeusage, or when the motorcycle is ridden inunusually dusty or muddy areas, morefrequent maintenance will be necessary.

Avoid cleaning products that are notspecifically designed for motorcycle orautomobile surfaces. They may contain harsh detergents orchemical solvents that could damage themetal, paint, and plastic on your motorcycle.

If your motorcycle is still warm from recentoperation, give the engine and exhaustsystem time to cool off.

We recommend avoiding the use of highpressure water spray (typical in coin-operated car washes).

High pressure water (or air) can damagecertain parts of the motorcycle.

Clean your motorcycle regularly to protectthe surface finishes and inspect for damage, wear, and oil or brake fluid leakage.

Rinse the motorcycle thoroughly withcool water to remove loose dirt.Clean the motorcycle with a sponge orsoft cloth using cool water.Avoid directing water to muffler outletsand electrical parts.Clean the plastic parts using a cloth orsponge dampened with a solution of milddetergent and water. Rub the soiled areagently rinsing it frequently with freshwater.Take care to keep brake fluid or chemicalsolvents off the motorcycle. They will damage the plastic and paintedsurfaces. After cleaning, rinse the motorcyclethoroughly with plenty of clean water.Strong detergent residue can corrodealloy parts.Dry the motorcycle, start the engine, andlet it run for several minutes.

Road Salt used on roads during winterand salt from seawater causes rust.Wash your motorcycle as follows after ithas run through salty water or on roadstreated with Road Salt.

Clean the motorcycle using cool water(page ).

Dry the motorcycle and make sure themetal is protected with the wax.

Do not use warm water. This worsens the effect of the salt.

When the exhaust pipe and muffler arepainted, do not use a commercially availableabrasive kitchen cleaning compound. Use aneutral detergent to clean the paintedsurface on the exhaust pipe and muffler. Ifyou are not sure if your exhaust pipe andmuffler are painted, contact your dealer.

Due to the top coat design, the seat surfacetends to catch and trap dirt or dust in itstexture.

Using plenty of water, clean the seat with asponge and mild detergent.

After washing, dry with a soft, clean cloth.

Extended storage, such as for winter, requires that you take certain steps toreduce the effects of deterioration fromnon-use of the motorcycle. In addition, necessary repairs should be made BEFOREstoring the motorcycle; otherwise, theserepairs may be forgotten by the time themotorcycle is removed from storage.

Change the engine oil and filter.Empty the fuel tank into an approvedpetrol container using a commerciallyavailable hand siphon or an equivalentmethod. Spray the inside of the tank withan aerosol rust-inhibiting oil.Reinstall the fuel fill cap on the tank.

To assure proper performance after storagelasting more than one month, it is importantto drain the carburetor.
