"Fis manual is intended to serve asa guide to the features and operationof the Catalina 25.

Before attempting maintenance oroperation of your Catalina 25. pleaseread the Catalina Yachts LimitedWarranty Booklet. Be sure yourdealer has completed the registra-tion card contained within the book-let.

The initial launching and riggingof the Catalina 25 should be handled

by experienced boat yard personnelunder the direction of your autho-rized dealer. After the boat islaunched. the dealer will completethe last phase of rigging and masttuning as described in this manual.

This manual should be used inconjuction with the CATALINAGEN-ERAL HANDBOOKwhich discussescare and maintenance. and. alsoincludes practical sailing and safetytips.

The last pages of this text containa "Pre-Use Check List" and a "Pre-Departure Check List". It will beuseful to incorporate these checksinto your sailing routine. A regularinspection is the best preventivemaintenance. and willhelp keep yourboat in good condition while in useand insure peace of mind when theboat is left unattended.

STEPPING THE MASTCAUTION

The aluminum mast and other metal

parts conduct electricity coming incontact with or near an electricalpower line or lightning can causesevere injury or death. Stay away fromoverhead electrical power Iines whensailing and/or launching the boat.

When trailering your boat alwaystry to undo as little rigging as Possible.It is necessary only to undo the twoforward lower shrouds and the fore-

stay before lowering the mast.

1. Before raising mast, make surehalyards are neatly tied down andthat they are on proper sides ofthe spreaders. You should neverattempt to raise the mast unlessthe upper shrouds (those that passover the spreaders) and the aftlower shrouds are attached tothe deck fittings and the turn-buckles well "started" into theirbarrels. The turnbuckles must notbe completely tightened however,because slack is needed in theshrouds to enable the mast tobe fully raised. The backstaysholJld be attached to the tran-

som chainplate.The upper shrouds,after lower shrouds, and backstaywill keep the mast from fallingover when it is raised, therefore,all of these must be attached tothe chainplates before the mastis raised.

2. Make sure that the shrouds and

stays are not fouled. Backstayshould lie clear of the transom.You may step the mast on land orwhile the boat is in the water. Itseems to be easier on land be-cause the boat is still. Also, it

keeps other sailors from gettingimpatient while they wait for youtto move out of the launch area.

3. Walk the mast aft and drop themast foot into the tabernaclelocated on fop of the deck, keep-ing the mast in center line of~boatinsert the pivot bolt and lockingnut.

4. One crew member should pull ona line tied securely to the forestaywhile another pushes up on themast and walks from the cockpitforward. With the mast erect,attach the forestay and forwardlower shrouds.

RIGGING FORHOIST LAUNCHING'

The fixed-keel model Catalina 25should be launched with the aid of ahoist and slings. The local dealer and

boaJ yard using hoists can adviseyou about this and will handle theoperation for you. Retractable-keelmodels are also often launched usinga hoist and slings.

Either model boat can be hoistlaunched with the mast stepped andin place in the vertical position byreleasing the backstay at the turn-buckle where it attaches to thetransom. However, the remainder ofthe mast's shrouds and forward staymust be properly connected to theirchainplates. Most importantly, checkthat the aft lower shrouds are securesince they will keep the mast fromfalling forward when the backstay ISdisconnected from the transom. Besure to re-connect the backstaybefore raising sails or getting under-way.

TUNING THE MAST

The mast is held aloft by the Stand-ing Rigging (forestay, backstay, up-per shrouds, double lower shrouds).The term "tuning" refers to adjust-ment of the standing rigging so thatthe mast remains "in column" (notbent) when under load. This is ac-complished by following the pro-cedure outlined below:

At the dock:

1. Adjust forestay and backstay sothat the mast is straight up anddown (perpendicular). Tie a boltto a 6 to 7 foot long piece of lightline to make a quick plumb bob,and tape the free end of the lineto the front of the mast as highup as you can reach. Thisdevicewill help you determine whetherthe mast is perpendicular or not.

2. Adjust upper shrouds so that themast is straight up and downathwarthships, that is from sideto side as opposed to from bowto stern.

3. The upper shrouds should befirm but not tight. A 50 poundpush should deflect the uppershroud about 1W' at shoulderheight.

4. The lower shrouds (4 of them)should be adjusted so that theyare looser than the upper shrouds.While at the dock they shouldhave no slack but also have notension on them. No lower shroudwhen pushed should defelect themast more than any other shroudwhen pushed equally hard. If thiscan't be achieved, the uppershrouds are too tight. Back offone-half turn at a time on the

upper shroud turnbuckles untilthe tension on the lower shroudsis brought into balance.

FINE TUNINGWHILE SAILING

The object of Fine Tuning is tohave the mast "in column" (not bentfore or aft or athwartships) when sail-ing in conditions typical for your area.This is accomplished through adjust-ments to the lower shroud turn-

buckles. Here are some points tolook for:

1. When ~ailing on port tack, sightup the mast from the base. If themiddle (where the spreaders are)is sagging to leeward, take upequally on both port lower shroudsuntil the mast is "in column."Repeat this procedure on ~tar-boardtack. ~

2. If, when sighting up the mast whileon port tack, the middle is bent

, forward (but not to leeward) takeup a turn on the port aft lowershroud and let out a turn on the

port forward lower shroud turn-buckle. Reverse these adjust-ments if the middle of the mastis aft of the "in column position."

If a perfectly straight mast is notobtained, the mast head (top) maybe curved aft and to leeward. Themast head should never be"hooked" forward to weather.

All rigging wire used on yachts hasa tendency to stretch, especially on anew yacht. or after you have sailed inheavier wind than you normally ex-perience. Therefore, you should peri-odically check the tension on theshrouds and stays, tightening themup if it is required.

Our masts are built to withstand

any normal usage but improper tuningor handling can cause problems.Therefore, it is impossible to guar-antee the mast under our current

warranty program. Rigging, as wellas tuning becomes all important whensetting up the mast. A knowledgeableperson should oversee the riggingand tuning so as to eliminate thepossibility of an eccentric loadingwhich might occur with an improperlytensioned shroud. §pecial attentionshould be given to the initial stretchof the shrouds and a further gradualstretch of the wire over the first few

hard outings.

When making the !uning adjust-ments while underway, it is advisableto keep the upper andJower nuts oneach turnbuckle snug to keep fromhavlhg the turnbuckle loosen. Uponcompletion of the tuning, tighten thenuts securely.

ALWAYS,before leaving the dockfor a day's sail, check all your turn-buckle nuts for tightness. Also, visu-ally inspect the fittings aloft. MOSTMAST FAILURES HAVE BEENTRACED BACK TO LOOSENEDTURNBUCKLES AND IMPROPERTUNING.

SPAR AND RIGGINGMAINTENANCE

Mill finish aluminum on the stan-

dard spar surfaces are protectedagainst corrosion by a thin naturallyformed film of aluminum oxide. Dust,dirt, smoke, salt and traffic fumes willadhere to this film, making the sur-face dull and unsightly. Coating thenew surfaces with a good paste waxlike Vista or Simonize, will help protectthe aluminum oxide from foreignmatter. If the surface has becometarnished, a good high grade cleaner,wax, or polish will help restore theoriginal sheen. Heavier pitting canbe removed by wetsanding with #600paper prior to polishing and waxing.

Anodized spars need only to bewashed with soap and fresh waterand waxed each season to maintain

the original finish for many years.

Fill finish aluminum spars may alsobe painted. Epoxy and polyurthanepaint systems have been speciallyformulated for use on aluminumspars. The coating manufacturers' in-structions should be followed.

Salt water will gradually stiffendacron line. Hosing with fresh wateror soaking in warm soapy water willmake the line soft and flexible again.Be sure to rinse line thoroughly. Keepline coiled and stowed in a dry spotbelow.

Clean rigging means clean sails. Aquick trip aloft with damp rags takescare of this problem. While aloft,check the entire rig for loose screws,nuts, bolts, cotter pins and chafewhich may have resulted from hardsailing. Periodic inspection of the rigis one of your best insurances againstrigging and spar failure. Keepinghalyards tied away from the maststops the annoying dockside clankingand save the mast finish.

Test the mast light before the mastis raised, this is especially importantafter the boat has been trailered.Spreader tips, turnbuckle barrels andclevis pins should be taped or cover-ed with plastic caps to reduce chafingon the sails. Tape any part of therigging which is sharp or jaggedwhich may tear the sails when sailingand coming about.

BATTERIES

The 12 volt electrical system ispowered by a12 volt DC, 70 amphour ~etcell marine grade battery.

The optional second battery islocated on the port side under thesettee or dinette seat, the secondbattery is also housed in a plasticcontainer and sec:ured to preventmovement.

110VOLT SHOREPOWER SYSTEM

The optional 110 volt AC system isconnected to shore power by agrounded, twist-lock-connector mount-ed on the outside of the port cockpitcoaming. Always connect the powercord to the boat and then to theshore power source. When removingthe cord unplug at the shore con-nection first.

A twenty-five Amp circuit break-'er is located on the aft bulkhead ofthe galley. Duplex outlets for the 110volt system are located on both sidesof the main cabin. Be certiain that all110 V. appliances, other than lamps,have an adequate grounding con-nector. Wet feet or moist atmoshereincrease the potential shock hazard.

Always use a marine type three (3)prong connectorw/locking ground forall shore power connections.

NOTE: When wiring shore power con-nector cable use 10 gauge, stranded (3)conductor wire or equJvalent. Use, 30amp, 125 volt connectors - wire tomatch receptacle on boat as shown.

RECOMMENDEDOUTBOARD ENGINE

An outboard engine of 7.5 to 10horsepower should be adequate topropel the Catalina 25 at hull speedunder usual conditions.

A larger engine will not increasehull speed and may add additionalunnecessary weight in the stern.

Long shaft engines are preferable,however, standard length shaft en-gines should be adequate for mostconditions.

OUTBOARD BRACKET

The factory installed outboardbracket is spring loaded to assistlifting and lowering the engine. Itlocks in both the up and downposition. To release the lock in eitherposition a downward pressure isapplied to the red handle while liftingor lowering the engine. The motorshould not be lifted clear ofthe waterwhile it is running.

The motor bracket manufacturer'srecommended maximum horsepowershould not be exceeded.

FUEL STORAGE

It is reccomended that any en-closed compartment used for fuelstorage be vented. The optionalfactory installedvents meet current,Coast Guard and State requirements

when fuel is stored in the port cockpitlocker on the molded storage plat-form.

Gasoline fumes are heavier thanair and will accumulate in the bottomof the compartment, if not properlyvented. This creates a fire and ex-plosion hazzard. Be sure there is aproperly installed ventilation systemthat complies with Coast Guard andState regulations before storing gas-oline in any enclosed compartment.

Portable fuel tanks should be secured

in place before getting under way.

TRAILERING

The Catalina 25 is an easy boat totrailer when certain precautions havebeen properly heeded. In addition tothe remarks in the GENERAL HAND-

BO<;>K.the following suggestions willprove helpful.

1. Be sure to read the Trailer Manu-facturers Instructions and Warrantycarefully, and do not exceed theManufacturers gross vehicle weightfor trailer boat and gear.

2. Check tongue weight. Most trail-ers tow well with 7 to 10 percent ofthe Gross Trailer and load weight onthe tongue. If the trailer tends to "fishtail" add tongue weight by movingweight forward or the trailer axlesaft.

3. Test the brakes by operating themaster cylinder manually.

4. Inspect the winch cable for brokenstrands or fraying.

5. Tie the mast and boom securelyto the bow and stern pulpits, thespars should also be supported in

the middle by the cabin top. Pad themast at all contact pOints to preventdamage.

6. In the retractable-keel model.check that the keel has been crankeddown until it rests firmly on thetrailer's rubber support wedge orroller. The rubber support wedgeshould bear the complete weight ofthe keel. Immediately before launch-ing, raise keel to maximum up posi-tion to clear trailer.

7. Fixed-keel boats as well as retract-able-keel boats should be seated

properly on the trailer; that is, notajar or tilted, and with the bowproperly snugged into the rubberwedge at the front of the trailer. Fixedkeel boats should have the weight ofthe boat bearing on the keel, not thepadded upright supports.

8. Follow normal trailer proceduresof connecting lights and safety chain,and be sure your hitch is well-secured. ,Always test lights before leavingramp area.

9. Do not allow anyone aft of thetransom during launching or loading,who could be injured if the boat weresuddenly dislodged from the trailer.

GENERAL OPERATIONAN D MAINTENANCE

POP TOP OPERATION

If your boat is equipped with a "poptop" hatch, the following notes willaid in its operation.

First of all, the pop top can be usedin two different positions. When thepop top is in the down position, thesmaller sliding hatch serves as access

to the cabin. When the pop top is inthe up position, access to the cabinis greatly increased and of course, sois the available headroom. To put thepop top in the up position you mustgo inside the cabin. The top is raisedby lifting upward and forward at thesame time. With the pop top in thefully raised position, reach forward tothe pop top slide lock and lock thetop to the mast.

In light winds you can sail with thepop top in the raised position, but inheavier winds it is recommended that

you keep it closed and fasteneddown, along with all other hatches.

ANCHORS ANDANCHORING

Under normal weather condifions

Remember: Lighter anchors aremade more effective by increasingthe scope, Le. the ratio of length ofline and chain to depth of water. A7:1 ratio is recommended. This~meansusing 7 feet of anchor line for eachfoot in depth of water. An anchor is anecessity aboard any boat, it isrecommended you have a usableanchor aboard whenever you leavethe dock.

A~TI-FOULINGBOTTOMPAINT

Anti-fouling paint should be appliedto the bottom if it is to be moored ineither fresh or salt water for anylength of time. There are many brandsavailable. Anti-fouling paint preventsthe growth of algae, barnacles andother fouling organisms on under-water surfaces. If this paint has beenapplied at the factory, no action isnecessary at the time of launching.

The anti-fouling paint used at thefactory is a vinyl-base copper bearingtype available either in red or blue.For those owners who apply anti-fouling paint themselves, it shouldbe noted that most brands require allunderwater fiberglass surfaces to bevery carefully sanded and primedimmediately prior to the first applica-tion on a new boat. In any event, theinstructions of the manufacturer ofthe brand of paint used should befollowed.

ELECTROLYSISPROTECTION

Ifyou decide to keep your retract-able-keel model in the water, espe-cially salt water. Bottom paint is a

must, plus periodic cleaning andremoval of marine growth from thekeel trunk slot. The possibility ofcorrosion to the keel and keel fittingsis greatly increased. Keeping aretractable-keel model in salt waterfor lengthy periods "is not recom-mended.

Should you decide to keep a re-tractable-keel model in the water at aslip or mooring for extended periodswhere electrolysis is a potential prob-lem, the following suggestions mayhelp to protect the keel assembly.The keel pivotpin is made of silicon-bronze, the hinge castings are ofbrass, and the keel itself is made ofiron. To retard electolytic action whichwill "~at" away the metals, drill andtap the side of the keel (near theforward edge) as close to the keelpivot assembly as possible. Then at-tach a teardrop shaped "zinc." Keep-ingtl;le keel in the raisedpositionwillhelp prolong the life of the cable(7x19, 1/4" S.S.) by keeping as muchof it out of the water as possible.

KEEL MAINTENANCE

Iron keels must be sealed to pre-vent rusting. You may paint the keelitself with rust retardant paint like thecommercially available "Rust-o-Ieum"or zinc chromate paints.

The fixed keel or retractable keelmay also be painted witha twopartepoxy paint system to prevent rusting.Mostepoxysystems require strippingthe keel to bare metal and filling witha chemically compatible filler com-pound. The paint manufacturersinstructions should be followed.

by two cast fittings recessed into thehull. Should the keel require removalat any time, these castings may beunbolted by removing the stainlesssteel cable and the four 3/8 x 16"bolts from the underside. Make sure

that the keel is well supported beforeremoving these fastenings.

When replacing the keel be sure touse lock washers and a liquid lockingagent like "lock tight". The boltsshould be reset with a torque wrenchto 35 Ibs. ea.

FRESH WATERSYSTEM

The galley is supplied fresh waterfrom a 16 gallon high density plastictank located under the starboardsetee. The tank is filled thru the ventcap mounted directly on the tank orthru the optional deck fill plate,located on the starboard side deck.The deck fill is labeled water.

The threads of the fill plate capshould be lightly coated with petroleumjelly or another non toxic lubricant toprevent corrosion between the plateand the cap.

ICE BOX DRAINThe ice box drain is tapped to the

galley sink drain. The ice box drain isfitted with a seperate valve. Thisshould be kept closed when sailing -to prevent salt water from backingup into the ice box when the boat is

,heel~d. In areas where overboarddischarge is prohibited the drains canbe disconnected and led to a jug inthe bilge.

MARINE HEAD

Boats manufactured before Jan-uary 31, 1977, may have an over-board discharge marine head. Thetoilet is supplied with servicing in-,structions. Operation instructions areprinted on the toilet pump housing.Read the instructions thoroughly andbe sure that all persons who mightbe using the head understand itsoperation. Parts and spares may beobtained directly from the toilet man-ufacturer or your servicing Catalinadealer.

HOLDING TANK

The optional holding tank is madefrom high density polypropolineplastic. The tank capacity is 14 U.S.Gallons. It is located under the for-ward end of the settee or dinette

seat on the port side.

The vent is located on the portside deck near the main chain plate.The vent line (1/2" 1.0.) must be keptclear. If it becomes clogged it shouldbe flushed with fresh water, this canbe done from the deck vent using agarden hose.

The tank is emptied by a shoreside pump thru the deck plate marked"Waste" on the port side deck.

Waste should not be stored forlong periods of time. The tank shouldbe emptied and flushed regularly.

A simple method of checking thelevel of the tank is to put a flashlight,lens down, on the top of the tank,then look at one side of the tank andyou can see the fluid level in thetank.

SEACOCKS

All underwater thru-hull fittings areequipped with gate valves. Close allgate valves when leaving the boat,especially for an extended period oftime.

To close seacocks, turn clockwise;to open, turn counter-clockwise.

It is good practice to operate thegate valves at least once a month tokeep them in good working orderCheck the packing glands on all gatevalves yearly to avoid water seepage.

MANUAL BILGE PUMP

The manual bilge pump is locatedin the port cockpit locker. The handleis stored in a clip fitting just abovethe pump inside the locker. Insertthe handle through the water-tightfitting in the cockpit to operate thepump.

The pump pick-up is in the keel stub

under the main cabin sale. The pumphoses are 1" 1.0.
