Unpacking

Remove the unit carefully from its packing. Lookfor the remote control and other accessories.Save the packing and box as it will protectthe RX-1052 if you move or need to return itfor maintenance.

Placement

Place the RX-1052 on a solid, dry, level sur-face away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, high humidity, or strong vibrations.

The RX-1052 can generate considerable heatduring normal operation. Do not block itsventilation openings. Allow a minimum of10 cm (4 inches) of unobstructed openspace around the unit. If installed in a cabi-net, make sure that there is adequate ventila-tion.

Make sure the RX-1052 is close to the othercomponents in your audio/video system and,if possible, place it on its own shelf. This willmake initial cable routing, hookup, and anysubsequent system changes easier. It alsominimizes potential interference or heat buildupfrom other components.

Make sure there is enough room behind theRX-1052 for easy hookup. Remember, you areconnecting many other components to this unitand you’ll probably need more space than youthink.

Don’t stack other objects (components or otheritems) on top of the RX-1052. Don’t let waterfall into the RX-1052 as this could damagedelicate circuitry.

We suggest you look over the RX-1052’s frontand rear panels before you start connectingother components. The explanations in thismanual will help you get familiar with the unit’sconnections, features, and controls.

Most functions are duplicated on the front-paneland on the remote. A few are found only onone or the other. Throughout this manual, num-bers in gray boxes refer to the RX-1052 illus-tration at the front of this manual. Letters referto the RR-AT93 remote illustration. When bothappear, the function is found on both theRX-1052 and the remote. When only one ap-pears, that function is found only on theRX-1052 or the remote.

13

CONNECTIONSConnecting the RX-1052 to your system isstraightforward. Just take your time and checkeach connection before proceeding to the next.

The RX-1052 includes two pairs of speakerconnections to the built-in stereo power am-plifier, so that you can drive “A” speakers or“B” speakers. In addition, a composite videooutput connects the unit to your TV monitor forthe display of video sources.

Each of the source components (VCR, TV set-top box, tape recorder, CD player) in the sys-tem is connected to the RX-1052 inputs witha pair of standard RCA cables for analogaudio. A composite video input is providedfor four of the source components.

In addition to the connections for the mainsystem, there are analog audio outputs plusa composite video output for three additionalzones. This allows the use of the RX-1052 todistribute audio and video signals to remotelocations throughout the house.

The supplied AM and FM antennae are con-nected to the antenna inputs.

Finally, the AC power cord is plugged into theback panel of the RX-1052 and then into anAC wall outlet.

There are many ways to configure and hookupan audio/video system. It is not possible tocover every configuration in this manual; there-fore, we describe the typical connections thatwill work well in a majority of situations.

NOTE: Do not plug any system componentinto an AC source until all connections havebeen properly made.

Cable selection

Use standard audio cables with RCA connec-tors for all analog audio connections. Use thefollowing color code:

Left channel audio: whiteRight channel audio: red

For composite video signals, use a single 75ohm video cable with an RCA connector ateach end. Use the following standard colorcode:

Composite video: yellow

NOTE: Do not use standard audio cables inplace of 75 ohm video cables. Audio cableswill usually pass the signal, but will degradethe quality.

When making signal connections, follow thecolor codes carefully at both ends of each cable.

Rear PanelThis section provides a short overview of theconnections on the rear panel of the RX-1052.Detailed instructions for hooking up each typeof component are provided in the followingsection.

Phono Inputs Phono Ground

These inputs accept left/right analog audiosignals from a standard moving magnet phonocartridge and a ground connection for theturntable.

CD Inputs

These inputs accept left and right analog sig-nals from a CD player.

Tape Inputs and Outputs

The RX-1052 provides a set of audio tapeconnections (labeled TAPE) with a pair of in-puts and a pair of record outputs that providea signal for recording.

VIDEO 1 – 2Inputs/Outputs

There are two sets of connections for videosource components. Each group includes apair of RCA analog audio inputs and outputsat the bottom and an RCA composite videoinput and output at the top. The outputs sendaudio and video signals for recording to a VCR.

NOTE: These video source input/outputs mayalso be used for an audio-only source. Sim-ply omit the video connections.

VIDEO 3 – 4 Inputs

These two audio/video inputs allow connec-tion of additional video components such asa play-only VCR, DVD player, LaserDisc player,or DSS satellite receiver. There are no outputsfor sending a record out signal to these com-

ponents. These video source inputs may alsobe used for an audio-only source. Simply omitthe video connection.

NOTE: When using a Rotel DVD player, con-nect it to the VIDEO 4 inputs. This allows us-ing the supplied remote to operate the basictransport functions of the Rotel DVD player.

TV Monitor Output

The video output of the RX-1052 sends the videosignal to your TV monitor. Connect the TVMONITOR output to an RCA composite videoinput on your television monitor. Whatever inputsource is selected on the RX-1052 will appearon screen.

Speaker Outputs

The RX-1052 has a built-in stereo amplifier topower left and right speakers. There are twopairs of connections on the back panel whichallow you to connect two pairs of speakers(A and B) and select them with front-panelbuttons.

NOTE: The combined speaker impedance mustbe a minimum of 4 ohms. If you are drivingjust one pair of speakers (A or B connections),use speakers with a nominal impedance of 4ohms or higher. If you are driving two pairsof speakers (A and B) simultaneously, usespeakers rated at 8 ohms or higher.

Zone 2–4 Outputs

Three sets of output connections distribute stereoaudio and composite signals to three remotezones. Each zone has left and right pre-amplevel audio outputs plus a composite videooutput for connection of a TV monitor.

AM Antenna

The RX-1052 includes a loop antenna to re-ceive AM radio signals. The twin wires fromthis loop antenna are connected to the AMLOOP connectors.

FM Antenna

The RX-1052 is supplied with a T-shaped indoorFM antenna. Connect the attached coax F-typeplug to the FM antenna connector on theRX-1052.

AC Input

Your RX-1052 is configured at the factory forthe proper AC line voltage in the country whereyou purchased it (USA: 115 volts/60Hz ACor CE: 230 volts /50 Hz AC ). The AC lineconfiguration is noted on a decal on the backof your unit.

Plug the supplied cord into the AC INPUTreceptacle on the back of the unit.

NOTE: Memorized settings and labels are pre-served indefinitely, even if the RX-1052 is dis-connected from AC power.

Master Power Switch

The large rocker switch on the rear panel is amaster power switch. When it is in the OFFposition, power to the unit is completely off. When it is in the ON position, the front panelSTANDBY and remote control ON/OFF but-tons can be used to activate the unit or put itinto standby mode.

NOTE: After all connections are completed, the rear panel master power switch shouldbe put in the ON position and usually left inthat position.

12V TRIGGER Connections

Many Rotel amplifiers offer the option of turningthem on and off using a 12 volt trigger signalsent to them. These four connections providethis 12 volt trigger signal from the RX-1052.When the RX-1052 is activated, a 12 volt DCsignal is sent to the amplifiers to turn them on.When the RX-1052 is put in STANDBY mode, the trigger signal is interrupted and the am-plifiers turn off.

To use the remote turn on feature, connect oneof the RX-1052’s 12V TRIG OUT jacks to the12 volt trigger input of a Rotel amplifier, us-ing a cable with mono 3.5 mm mini-plugs onboth ends. The +12 V DC signal appears atthe “tip” connector.

There are four 12V TRIG OUT connectors onthe back panel of the RX-1052, one for ZONE2, one for ZONE 3, one for ZONE 4, andone labeled ALL. The outputs for ZONES 2,3, and 4 send a trigger signal ONLY whenthe corresponding zone is activated by theRX-1052. The output labeled ALL sends a triggersignal whenever the RX-1052 is activated forany zone, including the main listening room.

IR IN Jacks

Four 3.5 mm mini-jacks (labeled ZONE 2,ZONE 3, ZONE 4, and EXT IN) receive com-mand codes from an industry-standard infra-red receivers (Xantech, etc.).

EXT IN: The EXT IN jack is used with an out-board IR receiver to duplicate the front panelIR sensor. This feature is useful when the unitis installed in a cabinet and the front panelsensor is blocked or when IR signals need tobe relayed to other components.

ZONE 2 – 4: The ZONE 2 – 4 jacks areused with IR repeater systems to receive sig-nals from IR control systems in remote zonesand control the RX-1052 only for the corre-sponding zone. For example, remote controlsignals sent to the ZONE 2 input control onlythe ZONE 2 features of the RX-1052. Signalsreceived at any of these inputs and can berelayed to other components.

Consult your authorized Rotel dealer for in-formation on infrared repeater systems andthe proper wiring of a 3.5 mm mini-plugs tofit the REM IN jacks.

NOTE: The IR signals from the IR IN jacks canbe relayed to source components using ex-ternal IR emitters or hard-wired connectionsfrom the IR OUT jacks. See the following sec-tion for additional information.

IR OUT Jacks

The IR OUT 1 & 2 jacks send IR signals re-ceived at the IR IN jacks to an infrared blasteror emitter placed in front of a source compo-nent’s IR sensor. In addition, the IR OUT jackscan be hard-wired to Rotel CD players, DVDplayers, or tuners with a compatible connec-tor.

These outputs are used to allow IR signals fromZone 2–4 to be sent to the source components,or to pass along IR signals from an IR repeaterin the main room when the sensors on the sourcecomponents are blocked by installation in acabinet.

See your authorized Rotel dealer for informationon IR emitters and repeater systems.

Computer I/O

The RX-1052 can be operated from a com-puter with audio system control software fromthird-party developers. This control is accom-plished by sending operating codes from thecomputer via a hard-wired RS-232 serial con-nection. In addition, the RX-1052 can be up-dated using special software from Rotel.

The COMPUTER I/O input provides the nec-essary network connections on the rear panel. It accepts standard RJ-45 8-pin modular plugs, such as those commonly used in 10-BaseT UTPEthernet cabling.

Multi Zone OperationThe RX-1052 provides multi-room capability, allowing you to enjoy music and operate thesystem in three remote zones (ZONES 2, 3,and 4) in addition to the main room. From theremote zones, you can select a source com-ponent (independent from the source playingin the main room), adjust the volume level inthe remote zone, and operate the source com-ponents.

To use the multi zone capability, you need ad-ditional components: a pair of speakers installedin each remote zone, an amplifier to drive them,an optional TV monitor for video signals, anda third-party IR repeater system.

Remote zones can be controlled from the mainroom using RX-1052’s front panel ZONE andSEL buttons or remote control REC and +/–buttons. Operation from the remote zone re-quires the installation of an infrared repeatersystem (Xantech, Niles, etc.) which relays in-frared remote control commands from remoteto the ZONE 2–4 IR IN connectors on the backof the RX-1052.

Several points to keep in mind about the multizone function:

• An infrared repeater system (Xantech, Niles, etc.) is required for operation from the re-mote zone.

• The remote control supplied with theRX-1052 will operate the remote zones ifused with a repeater system from the re-mote zone. It can also be programmed tooperate Rotel CD and DVD players via theRX-1052's IR OUT jack.

• Any source component connected to theRX-1052's inputs can be sent to the Zone2 – 4 outputs. EACH ZONE operates in-dependently. You can select a differentsource or adjust the volume in one zonewithout affecting the MAIN outputs or theother zones in any way.

• Avoid sending the same infrared commandto the RX-1052 front panel sensor and aremote zone repeater at the same time. This means that remote zones must be ina different room from the RX-1052.

Remote Zone Power On/Off

Once master power is applied to the unit bypressing the rear panel POWER switch but-ton, the RX-1052 provides independent poweron/off operation for both zones. Pressing theremote control ON/OFF buttons in the mainroom activates or deactivates the RX-1052 inthe main room only and has no effect on theremote zones. Conversely, activating or de-activating a remote has no effect on the mainlistening room or the other zones. However, placing the rear panel master POWER switchin the OFF position completely shuts off theunit, for all zones.

NOTE: For proper power on and off opera-tion with Zone 2, the RX-1052’s power modeshould be set to the factory default STANDBYsetting or to the DIRECT setting using the Set-ting Power Mode procedure.

Controlling a Zone from theRemote Location

With a properly configured IR repeater sys-tem, you can control of each zone using theRX-1052 remote from the remote location. Youcan select and operate a source, adjust thevolume, and turn the zone on or off. If the tuneris not in use for the main room, you can alsotune AM/FM stations from the remote loca-tion. Whatever commands you send from theremote zone will change that zone and onlythat zone, just as if you were controlling a to-tally independent audio system in that room. These changes will have no effect on the mainlistening room (except for shared sources).

To turn a zone on or off, press the ON/OFFbuttons on the remote. To adjust the volume, press the VOLUME buttons on the remote. Toselect a different analog input source, pressone of the INPUT buttons on the remote. Youcan also use the CHARACTER +/– buttons tostep through the source inputs. MORE INFORMATION

Protection CircuitA thermal protection circuit protects the am-plifier against potential damage in the eventof extreme or faulty operating conditions. Unlikemany designs, the RX-1052’s protection cir-cuit is independent of the audio signal andhas no impact on sonic performance. Instead, the protection circuit monitors the temperatureof the output devices and shuts down the am-plifier if temperatures exceed safe limits.

Should a faulty condition arise, the amplifierwill stop playing. If this happens, turn theamplifier off, let it cool down for several min-utes, and attempt to identify and correct theproblem. When you turn the amplifier backon, the protection circuit will automatically reset.
