Summer Update By the time you receive this copy of the Link, various developments and activities in our village should be complete or be well on the way to being established. Firstly, the properties being developed at Hallcroft for the Housing group Ongo should be finished, with tenants installed, and the establishment of new toilet facilities at the Village Hall will be nearing completion. The property development at Gowers Farm should be in its final stages and a new ‘sport wall’ for the children to use on the village field should be under way. Also, the hardworking supporters of St Nicholas Church will be anxiously awaiting the results of their application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for monetary help to restore the building there. Whilst some of the exterior of our village is changing and being updated, it is good to remember that many of these developments have come about because of the unstinting support and generosity of you, the residents. The fundraising for toilets at the hall has been funded, in part, by your contributions and attendance at the village auctions and at the Christmas Fairs held there, and it has only been possible for the Friends of St Nicholas Church to apply for funding to begin the restoration because of the enormous support you have all shown for that particular campaign.

Cont’d from page 1…. Yes, of course, so much more needs to be done – residents who have hedges abutting pavements should be more considerate in trimming them back to avoid dangers to mothers with children and to elderly residents on motorised vehicles - the inconsiderate parking all over the village continues to be a problem – as does the thoughtlessness of dog owners who fail to clean up after their animals, but beyond all this, the kindness, care and goodness of folk shines through. It may not be obvious elsewhere in the country, but, without doubt, village life is alive, well and thriving in Ulceby. There are currently vacancies on the Parish Council - please contact the clerk to the council (details on back page) for more information if you are interested. Dawn Macefield Chair

Parish Council Meeting Monday 15th August - 6.30 pm

It has been brought to our attention that several villagers suffered flooding during recent weeks. This was not only distressing, but caused much damage. North Lincolnshire Council and Anglian Water were informed of these events. Therefore, at the next Parish Council Meeting, a representative from Anglian Water will be present (Matthew Moore) as well as two

representatives from North Lincolnshire Council Drainage Department (Rod Chapman & Alan Drury). A resident was told by Mr Drury that the drainage system was “due to be upgraded” next year, but it seems that North Lincolnshire Council AND Anglian Water have said this in the past,

so please attend and voice your opinion!

What are we fundraising for now?

Friends of St Nicholas Church only fundraise for the restoration of the building

and to transform it into a community space for the use of the village. The

Friends of St Nicholas have a vision of delivering events that increase

community spirit and a sense of belonging in our village.

Fundraising for the general costs of the Church are undertaken separately by

the Church PCC, such money given during services, wedding fees etc.

With the generosity of the village we now have enough funds to offer the

money we need to the Heritage Lottery Fund for our contribution to the roof

repairs and then again when we submit our next bid for the tower.

Fundraising by the Friends of St Nicholas is ongoing to raise money for much

needed toilets, running water in the building and a server, to fund removing

some pews to create a community space and to create an archive of village life

that everyone can access.

Thank you as always for your support

ULCEBY VILLAGE HALL

Many people in the village still do not know that the Village Hall is their property and is run and maintained on their behalf by a dedicated team of volunteers. Over the years they have managed to secure many thousands of pounds in grants to improve what was already a splendid hall. A play area was constructed for the younger residents of the village to enjoy. The playing field has been levelled and drainage added (some would say not that successfully). A wildlife area and pond created which has just received a commendation from Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, and villagers of all ages enjoy the peace and tranquillity just sitting beside, or fishing in, the pond. A sports changing facility was constructed, with all the mod cons of professional football team and garage facilities for the equipment needed to maintain the hall and field. Inside the hall, the old heating system of electrical storage radiators was both expensive and inefficient, so air conditioning units were installed in the main hall and small room. These units enable the rooms to be quickly and efficiently bought to a comfortable temperature. A new roof was added as the old flat roof was seriously leaking and was in danger of destroying the fabric of the building. While this was being built solar panels were added to reduce the electrical consumption of the hall users. The kitchen was getting old and tired, and was damaged when the roof leaked, so a complete revamp was initiated which included new flooring, new kitchen units, two eye level ovens, five ring self cleaning electric hob, continuous hot water urn and a central island. and is now the envy of most village halls. The latest project is the toilet refurbishment - work will start in July and will involve a complete overhaul. The toilets will be stripped out, the ceiling lowered with inset lighting, the walls covered in easy to clean PVC sheeting, new toilets and trough urinal, new work tops with inset basins with hot water, new floor and the ladies will be pleased that heating will be installed.

Cont’d from page 5…. I think you would agree that this is quite an impressive list and I daren't think of what the total cost would add up to.* All of this has been done for you to make a village hall Ulceby can be proud of. But, as is mentioned in the first paragraph, the hall is owned by you and, apart from some support from the Parish Council towards the insurance, the hall’s existence relies on its income from the various regular hall users, occasional hirers and fundraising. Unfortunately over the years some of the groups using the hall have ceased to exist or have closed through lack of support. Often this is not through dwindling membership but from a shortage of people willing to run and manage these ventures. I know there are many very clever and capable people in the village with the expertise necessary to managing a small venture but it seems most are not willing to take on such projects. As has been explained the village hall has, over the past ten or so years, evolved into a building any village would be proud of. The management committee also needs to evolve and as the current committee is mainly retired folk, we would welcome new young members willing to donate a few hours a month in helping to manage your village hall. This occasionally involves getting hands dirty, trimming hedges, cutting back undergrowth and mowing the field (which takes about 1½ hours) and anything else needed to keep everything in order. If you feel that you could make a difference to another venture or help in any way, then please contact us. Informal meetings are held at 7pm on the second Monday each month. Or you could even attend the Parish Council meetings - they make decisions on your behalf, but are not always aware of problems unless you voice your concerns. I attend every month, usually alone.

You live here - get involved with village life. *Ed note: Total cost is around £330,000

DOORS AND WINDOWS

Ulceby WI Hello all! Well the summer is in full swing, even if the weather doesn’t always seem to be aware! We at Ulceby WI have been having a great time. Junes meeting was the most entertaining thanks to Sandra Bright aka The Flower Lady, with her tales of TV stardom and of growing beautiful blooms! July had us trying our hands at pottery and painting at The Crafty Retreat. It was a lovely evening and we all were quite artistic after all!! In August, brace your ears as we have been lucky enough to get another chance to ring the beautiful old bells at St Nicholas Church. We all so enjoyed it last year and it was so lovely to be able to spend time in the church. This year we are hoping to be able to access the fabulous collection of photos kept by the Friends of St Nicholas Church (thank you church mice!) The village has a lot of history and it will be really great to wander down memory lane with photos. September will see us doing something different again with a night of pampering thanks to Inner Beauty. We meet every third Thursday of the month at St Nicholas Church (unless we have an outing) at 7.30 pm. We always welcome new members and guests (new member fees are pro rata and guest fee is £3.50) and would love to see any new faces. Please feel free to pop into church on the 18th august; we will have cake and offer good company! Any queries feel free to contact us via email at [email protected] and you can always find us on Facebook!!

Just a quick note from the editor: I used the Call Connect service for the first time last week, and I was very impressed! I booked via the internet on the day before travel (if you can book further in advance, do!) and received confirmation within minutes. I waited at the bus stop the next morning at the allotted time. The mini bus was right on time, the driver was polite and helpful and I arrived early for my appointment! I would definitely recommend this service - it makes life a bit easier!!

Tea and Memories Update and next event information

Thank you those of you who took the opportunity to look at the nostalgic photographs exhibited at the Open Day on 11th June. We were delighted to also be able to display some treasured photographs and artifacts from Mr Stamp the tailor, including his ledger, demonstrating the different ways in which people settled their bill….including half a pig! These were loaned to us on the day by Jimmy Freudenberg and family. We also had some lovely photographs lent to us by Mr R Casemore, Mrs K Beaton, Mr P Hollowday, St Nicholas School, Ulceby Memories Facebook group. Thank you to all.

We have had a couple of request for copies of photographs which of course we are

happy to assist with. Please feel free to contact us

As the Church is quite cold in the winter months our next event on

Saturday 10th September from 11am - 3pm, will be the last one of 2016.

However, we are now planning for 2017 and considering a display of memories

specifically around celebrations in the village Weddings and Christenings.

Were you married or Christened at any of the village Churches? Do you have any

photo’s you would be willing to lend us?

Please let us know if you can assist in any way.

Your points of contact are Dawn Macefield, Liz Brown, Barbara Drury, Val Mumby

or Annemarie Turner if you see any of us out and about, or ring Annemarie on

01469 589936, or leave a message for us at the post office.

As always

Thank you
