Pastoral Letter - from Ruth Edy

The A435

When I’m explaining the geography of the Churn Valley Benefice, I often say that the nine churches are spread out along the A435, the road which links Cirencester to Cheltenham. I have a bit of a thing about the A435, for several reasons. I’m intrigued to know why the builders of the road in 1825 saw fit to separate North Cerney Church (and its Rectory) from the rest of the village on the other side of the river Churn, and what it was like travelling from Cirencester to Cheltenham, via Woodmancote and Bagendon, and Elkstone (?) before the road was built?

However, on a more personal level, from Rendcomb I can get onto the A435 and travel all the way to our daughter’s home on the outskirts on Birmingham, while staying on the A435 (ok, it changes to the A46 for some of the way!), and about half way through this journey the A435/A46 skirts round Harvington, the village just north of Evesham where Bob and I lived in the late ‘70s. The A435 really links up so much of my timeline.

Talking of time … I am writing this in the first half of June (Corinna’s deadline for copy for Parish Link is sensibly the 15th of the previous month!) and I have just been watching Prime Minister’s Question Time. So much is changing each week, each day in our country, that I fear any reflection here on current affairs would soon be out of date.

But while watching Question Time, three people with birthdays were mentioned in the Chamber: the Duke of Edinburgh, the Speaker and Archbishop Sentamu. On June 10th Prince Phillip was 99, Sir Lindsay Hoyle was 63 and John Sentamu was 71. Monarchy, Politics and the Church all having something in common!

On YouTube there is a short, very moving film of Archbishop Sentamu in an almost empty York Minister, laying down his crozier on the altar to mark his retirement. John Sentamu’s time as Archbishop of York will be remembered for many reasons. I recall his appearance on The Andrew Marr Show in 2007 when he cut up his clerical collar in solidarity with Zimbabweans who were suffering under the repressive regime of President Mugabe. Ten years later, when Mugabe was deposed, he put his collar back on - on the same television programme!

Page 7: Parish Link...Parish Link – July 2020 ….2 Please let our advertisers know that you found them in the Parish Link.Thank you! H MUSIC LESSONS Piano, Oboe, Recorder, Theory & History

Parish Link – July 2020 ….7

When reading a tribute to Dr Sentamu last week, one thing in particular jumped off the page for me - ACTS 435. ACTS 435 is a charity [ https://acts435.org.uk/ ] founded by the Archbishop ten years ago, which brings together - online - people who are struggling financially with others who want to help them directly. It’s called ACTS 435 because it relates to that post-Pentecost experience when people of faith were described as those who used the resources they had and ‘distributed to anyone who had need’ (Acts 4 v.35).

And yes, indeed, that is what has been happening along the A435 in our benefice in the last few weeks, before Pentecost and since Pentecost. People have been giving their resources - time, food, meals, books and reading suggestions, technical expertise and advice, garden produce, friendliness, helpfulness, encouragement - where it was, and still is, needed. Some activities never become out-of-date. Sharing our resources is vital for now and for the future.

Update on access to our Churches in July - Revd David

Dear friends, as you will know, our church buildings were locked in mid-March in accordance with instructions from the Government and the Church of England and have remained closed ever since.

As our nation begins to take cautious steps towards easing the lockdown, we continue to watch for the latest instructions and guidance. The Prime Minister has indicated that places of worship can now be opened for individual prayer and we joyfully anticipate welcoming you once again into our lovely churches, to spend time in prayer or to sit and enjoy the peace of those holy spaces.

However, all this comes with some severe restrictions since each parish church will have to complete a strict risk assessment and be sure that all safety rules are adhered to: we can’t just unlock our churches in the morning and leave them open throughout the day, however much we may wish to. And anyway, we have a responsibility to our parishioners and visitors to ensure everyone is kept safe. For this reason, the Church of England ask that we always have someone on duty while the church is open, so you can be sure of a welcome and guidance when you come. All of this takes a lot of preparation and planning, rotas must

Page 8: Parish Link...Parish Link – July 2020 ….2 Please let our advertisers know that you found them in the Parish Link.Thank you! H MUSIC LESSONS Piano, Oboe, Recorder, Theory & History

be arranged for cleaning and supervision. Many of our potential volunteers may be vulnerable themselves and so you will find it could take a little while for some of our churches to be open. You will see that some are already offering supervised times so please do make the most of that. We are grateful to all those who have volunteered to make it happen.

As time goes on, we look for further relaxing of restrictions, but these announcements from the Government often come unexpectedly and we have no idea what the next steps may be. We look forward to re-opening our buildings for worship in due course, but we have no date for that, and when it happens it will be under strict conditions. You can be assured that you will receive the best welcome possible into our churches and we will do everything we can to make sure you are kept safe.

In the meantime, we continue to offer a number of online opportunities to join us for worship, prayer or conversation, and our weekly update is on the website, emailed or delivered widely. Do keep an eye on the information as it changes often.

Throughout lockdown as the local church we have been doing our best, along with others, to care for our neighbours, support the Foodbank and offer help where possible. It has been a joy to see communities come together in so many ways.

It has been hard for us to be physically apart from one another in these last days, but many of us continue to draw encouragement from reading in the Bible of how God rescues his people.

The prophet Jeremiah speaks God’s words in Jeremiah chapter 29: 14: “And I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will return your captivity and gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will return you to the place whence I exiled you.” And he continues: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.

We are still the church together; God has good plans for us all and we look forward with hope and joy to better times.

Every blessing.

Invitation to a “virtual walk” around Rendcomb

You are warmly invited to join the Revd Arthur on Saturday 18th July at 10.30am for a slide show featuring a walk around the parish of Rendcomb – one of several walks which feature in the booklet compiled by Revd Arthur: "Short Walks in the Churn Valley". The slide show and talk will be delivered by Zoom. If you'd like to join the talk, which will last around 30 minutes, please email: [email protected] in advance and an email link will be sent back. Just click on the link at 10.30am. For further details about the virtual walks which have already taken place, and walks which are planned in future, please see: http://www.churnvalley.org.uk/news-and-events/news-and-events-7719.php

Once we are through the COVID-19 pandemic the usual arrangement for these walks will be for those interested to meet in person with Revd Arthur at the local parish church around which the walk is based. (T: 01242 870402 - Revd Arthur - or e: [email protected] ).

Children’s Summer Holiday Club cancelled

Unfortunately, it is now clear that it won’t be possible to run the planned Children’s Church Holiday Club at Stratton School from 27th - 29th July. However, we look forward to running one in the summer of 2021 instead!

Bibles for School Leavers. Would you like to help?

St Peter’s Church Stratton

Over past years the pupils of Class 6 have been presented with a Bible to mark the end of their time at Stratton School. Unfortunately, the last few months have been most disruptive for these children and they have missed out on so many of the usual exciting end of year activities. Also, we at Open the Book have really missed our weekly visits to school and the opportunity to pass on God’s Story. So, it is perhaps more important than ever that the children can receive a Bible to take with them on their journey forward in life.

Church finances are, as you can imagine, not as healthy as normal since the closure of our buildings. So, it would be much appreciated if you could consider making a donation towards the cost of the Bibles. Sadly,

because of COVID-19, we were unable to give Easter eggs to the children at the Haven, Gloucester. So perhaps this year we can help our young people a bit closer to home, in Stratton. Donations can be made by cheque to the PCC of Stratton and sent to:

Alan Lowe, 35 Pheasant Way, Cirencester, GL7 1BJ Or by bank transfer to the Stratton PCC Account: Lloyds Bank - Sort Code: 30-92-06; Account No: 00244900 Ref: Youth Bibles.

We do hope it will not be too long before we can re-establish our normal contacts and activities with Stratton School but until then we continue to hold all the staff and children in our prayers at this difficult time. May they all stay safe and well.

Reflections on the Lockdown

Hair today and gone tomorrow!

Another light-hearted article for us to enjoy during the lockdown, by the Revd Philip Morse

Methodist Minister (now retired and a Stratton resident)

In 1855, Oxford was in an absolute ferment of almost uncontrollable excitement. Alfred Tennyson, although a member of Trinity at The Other Place, was to be honoured by Oxford University conferring upon him the degree of Doctor of Civil Law. By this time, of course, Tennyson was already Poet Laureate and his magnificent poetry cycle, “In Memoriam”, had made him widely famous (and had not done his bank balance any harm either). He stayed for the occasion at Balliol, Benjamin Jowett being a personal friend of his. Waiting for the time of the ceremony to arrive, sitting in Balliol gardens, he said that: “The shouts of the undergraduates from the theatre [i.e. The Sheldonian] were like the shouts of the Roman crowd, ‘Christiani ad Leones!’” As Tennyson’s son, Hallam, later recorded, his father got a “tremendous ovation” when he received his degree, the only voice of humorous dissent coming when an undergraduate in the gallery shouted at Tennyson, “Get your hair cut!”

Oh, would that we could in this time of coronavirus lockdown! Tennyson had little occasion to trouble the barber. His long, lank, and somewhat unkempt locks

Page 11: Parish Link...Parish Link – July 2020 ….2 Please let our advertisers know that you found them in the Parish Link.Thank you! H MUSIC LESSONS Piano, Oboe, Recorder, Theory & History

topped off with his famous Spanish hat were part of the brand-image of “The Poet”. He was a big man with a deep resonant voice, and he never lost his distinctive Lincolnshire accent. Petite Queen Victoria, all four-feet-eleven of her (and probably getting smaller all the time), seemed to have looked upon him as a sort of eccentric, shambling, but nevertheless friendly old bear.

People tend to worry about their hair. Samson certainly had reason to do so. After having deceived Delilah three times as to the true source of his strength, we get these remarkable verses (Judges 16.16-17): “Finally, after she had nagged him with her words day after day, and pestered him, he was tired to death. So, he told her his whole secret…” And the rest, as they say, is history… or at least early cultural mythology. Having been blinded and imprisoned by the Philistines, we get that type of haunting verse that would do justice to any modern thriller (Judges 16.22): “But the hair of his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.” In the light of this story, I have to smile when I witness gentlemen who favour the sort of hairstyle that would not look out of place on a convict about to be transported to the Australian penal colonies because they think it makes them look strong and aggressive. Samson’s secret would suggest otherwise.

However, Saint Paul took exactly the opposite point of view (1 Corinthians 11.14-15): “Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is degrading to him, but if a woman has long hair it is her glory?” That verse has been used to castigate the flappers of the Roaring Twenties who bobbed their hair and the hippies of the Swinging Sixties who let it all hang out (as we used to say). Did either care? Was it really relevant? Can holiness be impugned by a choice of hairstyle? At this point, my wife coyly reminds me that for ladies the availability of a hairdresser may have something to do with colouration as well as with cutting. Being a man who started going grey and losing my hair in my late twenties, thus rendering all my personal tonsorial1 preferences pointless, I had overlooked this factor.

What may we say of Jesus himself in respect to hirsute considerations? Sadly, nothing with absolute certainty, I am afraid. The only thing we can say is that visual depictions of Christ are conditioned by what previous generations of artist envisaged and by what specific cultural milieu and conventions the current artist was adhering to. The oldest known portrait

1 Of, or relating, to barbering or hairdressing (Collins English Dictionary)

of Jesus was found in Syria and is dated to around 235AD. If a generation is counted as about twenty-five years that means that this portrait was made about eight generations after the earthly life of Jesus. Word of mouth is unlikely to have spanned that gap with any accuracy especially as the Bible itself gives no specific clue. The “one like a son of man” in Saint John’s vision in Revelation 1 cannot be counted as reliable in that respect.

The Syria portrait of Jesus is remarkable in various details. For a start, he is depicted with very short hair (just as Saint Paul favoured) and he is entirely clean-shaven. This, together with his style of clothes, suggests that he has been pictured as a young philosopher, a respected citizen in Greco-Roman society. The artist follows the cultural milieu of his day rather that the first century styles of what we used to call Palestine. More than three hundred years later an icon of Jesus in Hagia Sophia in Istanbul (see mosaic on right) reveals the long-haired, bearded image which is familiar to us. Subsequent artists followed suit.

My favourite depiction of Jesus is probably the one painted by Rembrandt in 1638 entitled “Christ appearing to Mary Magdalene” illustrating the verse (John 20.15) telling of Mary Magdalene “supposing him to be the gardener”. You can see why she made the mistake for, bearded and long-haired, Jesus is wearing a straw hat that would not be out of place on “Gardeners’ World” and carrying a trowel as though he is about to do a bit of light bedding-out. Perhaps the most enduring image in this stylistic tradition, at least in the British Protestant consciousness, is found in William Holman Hunt’s “The Light of the World”, illustrating Revelation 3.20.

Let us go back to “supposing him to be the gardener”. Why did Mary Magdalene not recognize Jesus until he called her by her name? It was nothing to do with whether he had had his hair cut or his beard shaved. The Book of Common Prayer says that: “Christ… shall change our vile body, that it might be like unto his glorious body…” That might have something to do with it. But Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy (the famous padre “Woodbine Willie” of the First World War) has a different slant on the matter.

Any poem that begins with the lines: “Our Padre were a solemn bloke / We called ‘im dismal Jim”, gets my vote from the outset. Studdert-

Kennedy’s majestic poem, “Well?” is a poem about rendering to Christ an account for the decisions and actions of one’s life, and the poet implies that we shall immediately recognize Jesus upon that further shore without having seen him with our own eyes on this one: “What was ‘E like? You’re asking now / Can’t word it anyway / ‘E just were ‘Im, that’s all I know / There’s things as words can’t say.” Jesus will be concerned with what we did with this life, whether we showed compassion and caring, courage and self-sacrifice, and good old-fashioned Christian love when challenged by need. The state of our haircut or whether our roots are showing won’t come into it.

Where is God in a Pandemic?

It is all too tempting to ask this question. But God is not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, nor even in a pandemic or war [1 Kings 19:11]. The prophet Elijah was slow to realise this until he heard that “still small voice” of God [1 Kings 19:12]. That voice was, of course, within Elijah’s own head. It was the voice of God alright; it is the basis of our conscience and we have each been given free choice to hear it or ignore it. The New International Version of the Bible tells us that it comes “as a gentle whisper”. It came to Elijah as a simple question, “What are you doing here?” [1 Kings 19:13]. It stopped him in his dreaded fear and doubts and caused him to think of alternatives and opportunities. This reminds us that, whatever the adversity in which we find our self, God is always there within us, even if we reject or fail to recognise that fact. But to recognise the presence of God requires a belief that we are not alone. We have a choice.

In the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic we need to be as Elijah. So what are the alternatives and opportunities we have in front of us? God is omnipresent within us and, wherever we are, we are in the presence of God; all we need to do is recognise it and accept it. A brief pause will show us the loving alternatives, although initially those alternatives may sometimes be difficult to comprehend.

Worldwide, the coronavirus has already killed more than 300,000 people and affected more than 4.5 million in over 200 countries and territories around the world. And doubtless there are more to come. The grief and loss at the death of anyone whom we love is always extremely painful, so what are our options? We can either choose to remain in the crippling depths of grief and despair or respond to that inner whisper of God within

Page 14: Parish Link...Parish Link – July 2020 ….2 Please let our advertisers know that you found them in the Parish Link.Thank you! H MUSIC LESSONS Piano, Oboe, Recorder, Theory & History

Parish Link – July 2020 ….14

us. For Christians, that alternative is to be found in our belief that in death there is the hope of the resurrection and that for a loved one to remain in the hearts of those left behind is not to die. COVID-19 cannot kill love.

The present pandemic has also released profound selfishness amongst a minority of the community and, where we experience selfishness, it is perfectly natural to feel anger. When we see the shelves in grocery shops denuded of all produce by those who have got there before us, it is a natural response to want to retaliate. But, how would that help the situation? It is more likely to result in aggressive violence. To turn the other cheek may be the honourable thing to do in the face of a personal insult; it is not the right or appropriate response to injustice. And to deprive the less fortunate of essential food is unjustly selfish. When experiencing selfishness, before retaliating we need to seek creative and positive alternative courses of action. The selfless loving dedication of all those working in health and social care services is an excellent example. Another fine example is the recent response of compassionate kindness demonstrated by the many proactive community groups that have evolved using social media to help and support vulnerable neighbours by co-ordinating collection and delivery of shopping and medicines. And there can only be immense gratitude to such selflessness and love. So, God is not in the disaster, nor in the pandemic. God is in each one of us [John 14: 20] and has given each of us the free will to choose to listen to that small quiet voice of hope and love within our conscience. Why would you not want to choose that way?

With thanks to Adrian R Hill - 17-05-2020 (Parishioner)

Bagendon: St Margaret’s to re-open for private prayer

As we go to press, St Margaret’s, Bagendon, is planning to open for personal prayer on Sunday afternoons from 2pm to 3pm commencing on Sunday 21st June. In accordance with initial government guidelines, a Church Warden will be on duty to oversee seating arrangements and to cleanse all surfaces after each individual leaves. Those wishing to take up this opportunity are asked to please bring their own prayer books.

Cowley - improvements go ahead, despite restrictions

A long-planned project to carry out maintenance and improvements at the parish church of St Mary, Cowley, was due to start on 29th June, following the approval of a faculty application. However, commencement of the project was then put in jeopardy by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic! Thankfully, through regular liaison with the Diocese of Gloucester and the ministerial team, the project coordinator, PCC Member and Secretary Gill Clark, managed to obtain the green light for the work to go ahead, so long as the contractor completed a health and safety risk assessment and adhered to the currently required distancing regulations.

Therefore, on Monday 8th June work began on one part of the project - to dig a trench for the laying of a shielded cable that will ultimately be wired up to new external floodlights. Unfortunately, the fitting of the floodlights cannot be completed quite yet, as access to the Vestry is limited due to temporary storage of organ pipes. However, all the wiring is now in place and the termination end coiled up by the vestry door ready for installation and connection once access to the Vestry is possible.

Thanks are due to Edward Hollingworth for not only organising the contractor to dig the trench for the floodlights’ cable but also for his work to put in place arrangements for another project - the painting of the interior walls of St Mary’s. Edward helpfully engaged a conservator, who inspected the church and then provided the

PCC with a comprehensive report. He also identified a specialist painter and obtained estimates for paint and scaffolding. Gill Clark is now overseeing the painting project with the assistance of both the Church Warden, Michael Dykes, and Lynn Joy.

Recent work to expose the stonework around the church windows of St Mary’s produced more dust than had been expected which has required remedial work on the organ. Therefore, in a third project, Michael Dykes recently organised for an organ specialist to dismantle the organ pipes and thoroughly clean the delicate internal parts.

Finally, thanks are due to Lynn Joy for organising the all-important port-a-loo for the duration of these various works! Hopefully, St Mary’s will be looking spic-and-span for all to enjoy when church services are finally allowed to resume again!

With thanks to Michael Dykes and Revd Arthur Champion for this update.

News from Elkstone

Retirement announcement

Three years ago when David Pierce passed away after a long illness, during which he still managed to continue as Churchwarden and Hon Treasurer, a very big hole was left to fill in the Elkstone PCC structure. Geoff Gait-Carr kindly stepped up to become Churchwarden and Brian Howlett generously took on the challenge of becoming our Treasurer. Since then Brian has managed Elkstone PCC accounts onto a solid footing and the necessary funds are in place to complete the Bells Restoration project, work on which should recommence once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. As a natural coda to his tenure as Treasurer Brian has given notice that he will be standing down when this project is completed early in the New Year.

We are all very grateful for Brian’s professional approach and the contribution he has made to Elkstone PCC. If you feel God may be calling you to help out as Treasurer, please have a word with Geoff, our Churchwarden, whose contact details are on the back of this magazine.

Latest from Rendcomb - Ruth Edy

More Zoom meetings have kept the PCC Roof Repairs sub-committee busy during the last month and we have now reached the stage where we have the support of the DAC (Diocese Advisory Committee) and detailed plans are being prepared by our architect.

Rendcomb College is adapting to the current new norm. Some of the Junior School pupils returned to the buildings on Monday 8th June for the remaining weeks of the summer term. The rest of the pupils, juniors and seniors, are being taught on-line, following their normal daily timetable.

We have continued to share photos of each other’s activities during the lockdown. These are displayed in the church porch, as well as an interesting selection of books and DVDs for people to take and enjoy, and a box for contributions for Cirencester Foodbank. Many of the village residents make a stop-over at the church and the churchyard as part of their daily walk or exercise.

As we go to press news has come in of St Peter’s plans to re-open its doors for private prayer, in accordance with government guidelines. (continued on page 20)

Schools’ News

North Cerney C of E Primary Academy

Our Christian value for this term is Respect. The children are learning the

importance of treating others with the same respect that they would like

shown to them. We have also been thinking about how we should treat the

things that belong to us and to other people respectfully. One of our

tasks is to consider how to put this into practice. We are looking forward

to what the children will show us!

Our pupils have impressed us with all their amazing home learning; they

have been incredibly resilient to the pressures of home learning and

lockdown. It has been a delight to welcome back some of our Reception,

Year 1 and Year 6 children since 1st June. They look very happy to be back

with each other even if it is 2 metres apart!

Community news and events

Shoe Boxes for Christmas!

Following the success of this venture last year, I thought I would start early to ensure that we fill even more boxes than we did last year (25 in 2019)! This year I am also intending to make sure that the contents can be more flexible and many of the boxes will be donated to Signpost in Cirencester for the benefit of local disadvantaged children. If you would like to fill a shoe box (decorated in Christmas paper but not wrapped in paper because I will need to check the contents), then please label the outside with the age range. Last year I restricted it to 5 - 9 girl or boy, but this year I will leave it up to you to decide which age range you would like to buy for - from baby up to say 14 years.

Please do not include promotional items or anything related to violence (toy guns etc.) but please do include: toiletries; socks; under-pants; sweets; crayons; books (age appropriate); felt-tips; a small toy; gloves; crafts; woolly hat and scarf, etc. I will leave it to your discretion. If we could make the cut-off date 30th November that should give me time to process the boxes. Alternatively, if you feel unable to fill a box, please feel free to share with someone else or, if that is still a burden, a £5 donation in lieu will be very helpful. If you would like any further information, please do contact me. Thank you.

Tuesday Group - Judith Wood

Due to COVID-19 Stratton Village Hall is still closed, and we are unable

to have a group larger than six people meeting together. Therefore, the

Tuesday group has had to cancel many of its forthcoming plans for 2020.

However, we are hoping that perhaps by October we will be able to report

better news and to confirm plans for our next meeting.

The planned Summer Outing in July, which was to have been a

coach/river trip to Henley-on-Thames, has been cancelled but hopefully

everything will be clear for 2021 so that we can run the same trip next

summer instead!

As soon as we receive good news from the Government about Theatres/

Halls etc. being able to re -open we will make contact to let everyone

know who will be coming to give a talk. We really look forward to

welcoming you back to Tuesday Group when circumstances allow.

In the meantime, take care and stay safe.

Citizens’ Advice is still here for Cotswold residents

When the lockdown began on 23rd March, Citizens’ Advice Stroud and Cotswold Districts quickly mobilised staff and volunteers away from face to face interviews to the provision of one to one advice over the phone and via email. Since then the charity has helped over 1,200 households with Coronavirus and non-Coronavirus related problems.

Martin, a volunteer adviser, said “This service is vital more now than ever. There continues to be so much anxiety around the virus and what it means for people’s health, wellbeing, jobs and finances. As a volunteer, it feels good to be able to help and it’s a privilege to work with such an experienced team of staff and volunteers.”

Help can be given with applying for benefits, employment issues, managing finances, relationship breakdown, housing and many other issues.

Sarah Telford, CEO, said “If you are in need of help, whether your problems are due to Coronavirus or not, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Come to us as soon as you're aware there's a small issue and we can help."

The Helpline number is: 0808 800 0511 - Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm. Calls are free from landlines and most mobiles.

For email enquiries, visit our online email page: https://www.citizensadvice-stroudandcotswold.org.uk/stroud-cab-email-advice.php and complete a short online enquiry form with a few sentences explaining your problem.

We may not be able to meet you face to face at the moment, but we are all still here and waiting to help you.

Pig news - Amazing news! Mabel and Tigger are both expecting. Even more exciting they are both due within the next three weeks! We have been madly putting together another area for Tigger, as Mabel has been in the farrowing nursery for over a month. We were hoping she would have her piglets at least two months before Tigger, but apparently not! So, fingers crossed we will have lots of piglets here from July.

More chicks! We found a bantam sitting on four eggs in the barn so have moved her to her own house in the hen run, and she has hatched four chicks. She’s extremely feisty, and not keen on us catching up any of the chicks to have a look at. The other chicks we hatched in the incubator - six in total - are nearly large enough to go out with the other hens.

Students - If you know anyone who you think could benefit from spending time with animals, making new friends, learning new skills, or who is struggling with mental health problems, please send them our way. Have a look at our website: www.scrubditchcarefarm.org.uk, and contact Gerry: [email protected] NB Social prescribing - you may be able to be referred via your local doctor’s surgery to access our facilities….find out!

Group visits - Under normal circumstances we are happy to host one off group visits to the Care Farm. So, if you are part of a group that would be interested in visiting at some point, do get in touch with Gerry.

Talks - If you know a group that would like to hear one of our talks, they last about 40 minutes and we give a fun and informative overview of the Care Farm, then do email: [email protected]

Amazon Smile - We are one of the charities Amazon supports. So, when you buy anything from Amazon from now on remember, always start at smile.amazon.co.uk and Amazon will donate 0.5% of the net purchase price (excluding VAT, returns and shipping fees) to the Care Farm, if you select us. We also have a wish list of items we need for our Cookery Studio. See Amazon ‘Wish Lists’ - Scrubditch Care Farm.

Caring for our Environment

How is lockdown affecting the environment? - Revd Arthur

What strange days we are living through! We used to show our love for

others by giving them a hug but now if you really love someone you show

it by keeping two metres away! The NHS has prioritised COVID-19

patients, but this has meant delays to the treatment of those with long-

term illnesses such as cancer and heart conditions. Many of us are doing

less but somehow are feeling more tired.

If lockdown was meant to allow more time for personal reflection, many of

us, myself included, haven’t really noticed it. However, I would like to

offer a few observations which may “ring a bell” with you too. These are

some of the most noticeable changes:

• Millions of former office employees are now working from home on laptop computers and saving themselves the hassle and expense of commuting;

• Those who do have to commute are avoiding public transport as much as possible by doing more walking and cycling which must be better for health;

• Hardly anyone dares to use aeroplanes, so the sky is clear of vapour trails but with a negative impact on business and recreation;

• Shoppers have shifted onto the internet and are making greater use of local shops such as garages and farm shops;

• Some of those shopping for groceries have reverted to products which are prepacked in plastic to minimise their time spent in the supermarket;

• The travel restrictions have resulted in using less fossil fuels although the downside is that tens of thousands of merchant seamen are trapped in their oil tankers and unable to dock;

• “Make do and mend” is back!

Page 26: Parish Link...Parish Link – July 2020 ….2 Please let our advertisers know that you found them in the Parish Link.Thank you! H MUSIC LESSONS Piano, Oboe, Recorder, Theory & History

Parish Link – July 2020 ….26

• Allegations of racism have surfaced; perhaps also fuelled by frustrations about loss of jobs (for instance, 40 million are currently unemployed in the USA).

To quote the Revd David from back in March: “A global event like this is a shock to us all, as we have become so used to being self-reliant, able to conquer all things.” To put it another way this sudden pandemic reminds everyone that some aspects of life on Earth have always been a struggle; for example, crop failures due to bad weather, deadly diseases, earthquakes, storms and human sin, such as criminal activity and warfare. A newspaper article on 10th June celebrated the fact that Britain has not used any coal-fired power generation on the grid for a full two months, which is the longest period since the Industrial Revolution. However, the fact is that our modern civilization owes much to fossil fuels! The industrial revolution got started because of coal and since WW2 the world has become increasingly dependent on oil and natural gas. Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion have certainly alerted everyone to the threat of man-made climate change. However, so far the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change hasn’t been able to set this in the context of natural variations in the atmosphere due to volcanic activity, fluctuations in the Earth’s orbit around the Sun and many other complex factors that cannot easily be represented by computer models. My more recent reading has reawakened concerns over nuclear energy which some are claiming to be “clean” although uranium is in-fact a fossil fuel. What is more, there’s still no satisfactory solution to the disposal of highly radioactive nuclear waste which is deadly for thousands of years. I expect we’ve all noticed that with fewer cars on the roads, and thanks to a spell of good weather, nature has had a chance to recover. The Beatles once sang “the best things in life are free,” although you may want to ignore the rest of those lyrics! A slower pace of life with more time enjoying the rectory garden has made Margaret and I much more aware of intense birdsong, the wonderful patterns of clouds and the amazing night sky. Clearly there is much to be thankful for even in these strange days!

Joke for July

A Senior’s Version of Facebook

‘For those of my generation who do not, and cannot, comprehend

why Facebook exists: I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook

while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the

street and tell passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment,

what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom. I

give them pictures of my family, my dog and of me gardening, taking

things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of

landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and

everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them

“thumbs up” and tell them I “like” them. And it works just like Facebook. I

already have four people following me: two police officers, a private

investigator, and a psychiatrist’.

Allan and Barbara Pease (Australia - April 2015)

With thanks to Revd Arthur for sharing this.

Poem - a useful reminder

Handwashing The New Olympic Sport

Handwashing's the Olympic sport at which we can all excel

And the Government sent leaflets round so we can do it well.

There's no excuse to not join in - you don't need to be bold,

We can all practise it in-doors to gain an Olympic Gold.

It's not a case of speedy wash – a quick splash just won't do,

Washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds - you

must wash both palms and backs; both thumbs and fingers too,

And how long is 20 seconds? 'Happy Birthday' twice will do!

But don't forget to moisturise - you need your hands to be

lovely, smooth and beautiful for a Gold Olympic-Victory!

Recipe

One of our readers will be sorry to hear that Revd

David was unfortunately unable to locate his much-

admired recipe for Cherry cake! To take the edge off

the disappointment this may cause (!), below is a

simple, somewhat decadent recipe idea for Summer,

which might be appealing if the warm weather returns.

Lemon Ice Cream

Ingredients:

2 lemons

3 oz. icing sugar

¼ pint of double cream

4 fluid oz (1/2 cup) of water

Method:

❖ Pare rinds of 2 lemons and set aside; then squeeze juice from lemons

❖ Place thinly pared lemon rind and icing sugar in a pan with 4oz of

water.

❖ Simmer for 20 minutes.

❖ Leave syrup to cool.

❖ Strain and add syrup to the lemon juice you squeezed earlier.

❖ Whip cream.

❖ Gradually add cooled syrup to the whipped cream, stirring gently

until the whole mixture is smooth.

❖ Pour mixture into a container suitable for freezing and cover with

foil.

❖ Freeze for 2.5 - 3 hours.

❖ NB Remove from freezer and stir mixture twice during this freezing

time – once after 30 minutes and a second time after 1 hour.

❖ Pair with lovely summer berries to serve!

News from our NHS Trust - Anne Davies

In this news I am happy to not only be able to update you on COVID-19 but also, with the pandemic easing, announce a writing competition for young people.

This month the Trust moved into the second phase of planning for COVID-19 after extensive consultation with Integrated Care Partners, the Health and Overview Scrutiny Committee, local groups including REACH (Restore Emergency At Cheltenham General Hospital) MP’s and Governors. At the heart of these changes are the goals of minimising the risk of transmission of the virus to patients and staff. Importantly, the changes will benefit patients needing urgent operations, those who may need cancer surgery and many who have had delays to planned treatments. The changes also leave the Trust in a good position should a second surge occur in a way that will not have the disruptive effect on service delivery and staff that was experienced in phase 1. These temporary changes have been made possible due to the Trust having two sites close together, and the staff have been amazing in adapting quickly to change, as they have throughout this pandemic.

The main concerns expressed related to the temporary downgrading of Cheltenham A & E to a minor illness and injury unit (MIIU) and its overnight closure during this period. Alongside the MIIU however an enhanced Ambulatory Emergency Care Service (AEC) will operate Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm to see patients referred by GP’s who need specialist reviews but are unlikely to require admission. Discharged patients will also be followed up at this centre. Governors also expressed concern about the safe transfer of patients between sites e.g. someone admitted via A & E at Gloucester Royal with a stroke may, after stabilisation, be transferred to Cheltenham Hospital acute stroke unit to continue their treatment. I am pleased to report that a contract has now been signed with a company that can deliver high quality and safe care when needed.

Moving on, it has been widely reported nationally that the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities are twice as likely to be affected by COVID-19 and to have poor outcomes from it. However, we have not seen this in our Trust. There has not been a disproportionate impact on local BAME communities admitted. Furthermore, the mortality

Page 32: Parish Link...Parish Link – July 2020 ….2 Please let our advertisers know that you found them in the Parish Link.Thank you! H MUSIC LESSONS Piano, Oboe, Recorder, Theory & History

Parish Link – July 2020 ….32

rate has been much better being 12.5% against 36.47% of other deaths (the latter figure is in keeping with the national picture).

Following on from the cancellation of the Youth Open Day, we want to

start our involvement again with young people. So, we are launching a

Creative Writing & Poetry Competition under the principle of finding

health and wellbeing through the arts. It’s been a tough ten weeks under

‘lock down’ and now is the chance for all young people in Gloucestershire

to free their thoughts and release their imagination by writing a short story

or poem inspired by our titles ‘Silver Linings’ or ‘The Covid Wars’.

The following categories will apply: Short story (500 to 100 words) in

three age groups 11-14, 14-16, and 16-18; Flash Fiction (max 150 words)

open to all ages; and Poetry (max 30 lines) also open to all ages. We

hope to publish the winning entries so nothing personal should be

included in the entry. Each winner will receive a prize. It is important for

those taking part to include their name, age, category, word count for

stories, and parental/guardian contact email and telephone number if

under 18. Email your entry (only one per person) to

[email protected]. The closing date for entries is July 31st.
