The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure buried in a field; which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. The Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all he has and buys it.In both parables both men appreciate the true value of what they have discovered. Both men are certain about the wisdom of what they must do and are willing to put everything on the line to secure their newfound treasure. Today Jesus is asking us to determine how much we treasure the Kingdom of Heaven. How valuable is Heaven to us and what are we prepared to do to secure it? Are we prepared to give all weve got and to renounce everything that gets in the way? If the two men in the parables had passed their treasure by or failed to recognise the treasures value, we would have thought them insane, yet this is how we behave all the time. All too often we are prepared to let the Kingdom of Heaven slip through our fingers. Perhaps we do this because we have never stopped to reflect on how valuable the Kingdom of Heaven is. Perhaps we have recognised the value of Gods Kingdom to us but have forgotten it in the day-to-day distractions of putting meals on the table and paying the bills. Perhaps heavens rewards seem so distant that we prefer instead to work for more immediate and tangible rewards …., home improvements, fame, social acceptance and career development. Perhaps we think we can work on Gods agenda and our own agenda simultaneously, recognising the value of Gods Kingdom but not quite able to renounce our own self-interest. Jesus gives us some concrete advice. He tells us that those who study the scriptures and search diligently will find the discernment to recognise Gods treasure and the wisdom to secure it. DISCOVER WHAT LOVING REALLY MEANS

Instead of praying for `treasure’, King Solomon prayed for wisdom ‘to discern good from evil’. When discerning what ‘loving’ really means, you find ‘hidden treasure’ in these weekly reflections on Scripture. They will also help you to discover the ‘hidden treasure’ in each other. Sharing this, you sow ‘seeds’ of love in the minds and hearts of others.

RED MISSION BOXES - in order to make the task of emptying the boxes more stream-lined an announcement will be made in the newsletter twice a year asking holders of the red Boxes to ensure that the sticker underneath is filled in correctly with their name and address and to bring the box with them to their weekend Mass. A couple of weeks later the box will be ready to collect from the church emptied and ready to begin again! Would ALL those box holders who have not yet had their box emptied since March now bring in their boxes. Thank you. This is the last call for these. FINDING A CHURCH ON HOLIDAY - It can be difficult for Catholics to find a Mass when traveling or when it is not practical to attend their regular parishes. It is not always easy to find the right diocesan or parish websites. “Mass Times” makes it much easier to search for a Mass by presenting all the possibilities in a geographical area on one web page. This really useful website provides worship times, church locations, contact information, website links and maps. There are 117,000 churches in 201 countries/territories. Visit www.masstimes.org WELCOME - A warm welcome is extended to all those visitors joining us for Mass this weekend. THE GOOD LITTLE COMPANY - If you’re planning a Summer BBQ, keep your eyes skinned for the ‘Good Little Sausages’ brand. The Good Little Company began with a simple idea back in 2011 but a big vision. 50% of its profits means that the Good Little Company can help develop sustainable farming solutions in Kenya, educate young people in one of the most remote regions and feed vulnerable children in rural Malawi. It all begins with a packet of sausages!

DEACONS’ THOUGHTS . . . .

After a few weeks of compressing some of the Church guidance on services in the absence of a priest, I would like to offer some lighter thoughts for my last session this July. Monday, the 31st July is the memorial celebration of St Ignatius Loyola, reading his biography some years ago I found his life very impressive so I want to say just a bit about him.

He was born in the Spanish Basque country in 1491, as a soldier he was wounded when fighting the French. He had a long convalescence, and spent much of it reading, including a life of Christ and a collection of lives of the saints. He realised that he had a vocation to serve God; spent a year’s retreat in a Dominican friary, made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and learnt Latin. He built up a group of followers and a number of them were ordained. They formed a religious order in 1540; the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), and Ignatius was their first Superior General until his death in 1556. He had become a deeply spiritual man, and among his works he wrote the ‘Spiritual Exercises’; a retreat type plan that anyone could follow.

This Sunday, the gospel passage tells us to focus on the most important things of life. Jesus uses parables relating the Kingdom of God to hidden treasure and pearls, things highly desired; showing us how we should truly value the Kingdom of Heaven. Ignatius is a prime example for all of us; we too need to find God’s Kingdom in our own lives, recognise it, and become totally committed followers of Christ.
