Presidents Trumpet September 2020

Labor Day [‘laber, dā] - NOUN – “A public holiday or day of festivities held in honor of working people, in the US and Canada on the first Monday in September, in many other countries on May 1.”

As I sat down to write my September 2020 “Presidents Trumpet” message, I thought about the Labor Day Holiday and its’ meaning to each of us as fans and supporters of our sport of keeping the spirit and the brand of Oldsmobile alive.

Oldsmobile celebrated its’ first 100 years on August 21, 1997, as described and documented in the book “Setting the Pace, Oldsmobile’s First 100 years.” As I scanned my personal copy of the book this morning, the stories and photographs of Oldsmobile’s history again came alive and made me think about the thousands of “working people,” men and women who in September of each year celebrated Labor Day in honor of their contributions to Oldsmobile.

During this year’s Labor Day Holiday, I encourage everyone to reflect upon and remember the men and women of Olds that over the years designed, manufactured and assembled our treasured Oldsmobile’s, and give them thanks for their work efforts which we continue to enjoy well into the 21st Century.

Speaking of our enjoyment, planning sessions are or will soon begin in support of our 2020 Zone Show meeting, as well as our hopeful participation in the February 2021 Dallas Autorama event. Tom Bilse and I met recently (social distancing applied) to discuss planning an organization activities in support of our annual participation at the Dallas Autorama. The single most important task at this time is our ability to commit 6 fine Oldsmobile examples for participation in the show, as well as 2 backup / alternate participants as well. Tom and I will soon be contacting club members with our participation recruitment message. Oh, and also, there are volunteer participation opportunities available with each of these events as well. If you are interested in same, please contact me.

Everyone: Please continue to stay safe and healthy and again, please also let me know of any club member that may be in need of assistance with grocery shopping or other errands during this time period.

And remember “There is a special feel in an Oldsmobile.”

made by check while we work on a method of providing a convenient way of making contributions and making payments to the club for membership and renewals.

Glenn said he believes that it will be OK to set up a Venmo account to collect contributions to the Helping Hands Fund and for membership dues and registrations to be made. Payments can be made through Venmo to a specific email address and then the funds are transferred to the NTOC bank account by the Treasurer or another authorized NTOC officer. Venmo provides a monthly transaction report that gives the amount and reason stated by the person sending the funds for the transaction. This would still require new members to complete a Membership Application and either mail or email it to the Treasurer so he can match up the funds with the member. It could also be used for paying for the Christmas Party as long as a separate input is made for dinner choices, etc.

This may not work for the Zone Show since there is a separate bank account for those transactions. Before anything is put in place the membership would have to approve the procedure. A motion will be presented during the September monthly meeting.

Glenn also mentioned that the cost of printing and mailing copies of the Rocket has increased over the past year. He recommended that we contact the members who receive the hard copy of the Rocket through the postal service to see if they might be willing to download a copy from our website. Lois mentioned that there the current issue and several years of past issues are stored on the website.

Club Spirit Items

Caps and VisorsThe new NTOC Club caps and NTOC visors are still available. Cap price is $15.00 and visors are $12.00. Caps are available in a variety of colors, red, white, and charcoal. Harat reported that all but one (1) of the Royal Blue caps have been sold. Visors are available in red, royal blue and white. The caps have the NTOC logo, but the artwork was too large for the visors so they were embroidered with an Oldsmobile logo, a Texas flag, and the letters NTOC

Contact Harat Manges if you are interested in getting either a cap or a visor.

Club Logo Decals Lois ordered the two types of NTOC Club Logo decals and they have been received. Both decals are now available from Harat. The two types are: 1) die cut, back adhesive stickers and front adhesive decals. The decals are available to be purchased for $1.00 each. New members will receive a club logo decal as part of the welcome letter.

October was chosen since the State Fair of Texas has been cancelled for 2020. Put second Saturday in October on your calendar. Keep up your hopes that this will be an event that will take place because the COVID-19 virus is under control.

The July Mustang Club event was attended by 92 people. This is an outside event where social distancing can be done and still exhibit our cars.

Future NTOC events 2020Discussion was opened about taking another East Texas drive this fall to get our cars on the road and to do some socializing. A proposal to do a cruise on October 24 was made. Harat is working on pulling together a proposal that will include the cruise route and a place where we can have a picnic lunch. Discussion included the picnic lunch instead of trying to find a restaurant where we could all get inside. Harat has identified a proposed route through East Texas from Athens to Palestine. (No, you will not need a passport.) The date is October 24, 2020. Cruise route will be about 145 miles mostly on Texas FM roads. Picnic lunch at Davey Dogwood Park (Near Palestine) where there are plenty of parking and picnic tables. We can all wear masks and use hand sanitizer to be safe, but it will be nice to get the old Olds on the road again!!!

2020 NTOC Annual Christmas Party Sunday, December 13 at Aboca’s Italian GrillReservations have been made for the NTOC Annual Christmas Party to be at Aboca’s Italian Grill in Richardson. This is the same location as 2019. More information about the menu and reservations will be in the October and November Rockets.

made by check while we work on a method of providing a convenient way of making contributions and making payments to the club for membership and renewals.
