THIS WEEK: THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Just over a month ago we were still celebrating the Christmas
season. In another few days we will begin the season of Lent.
This section of Ordinary Time is quite compressed. But it
gives us enough time to complete the first chapter of Mark,
which we do today. We meet the leper who, cured of his
leprosy, cannot keep quiet about what Jesus did for him. He
provides an example of the believer testifying to Christ’s
power.
DISEASE AND SIN
The begging leper and the paralytic dropped in, and both
wanted to be cured of their ailments, including their sin.
Overcoming religious fears and
social customs, they made their
requests. Jesus replied, “Yes, of
course,” and then made the point
that healing from sin and healing
from disease are two sides of the
same coin. Do we have courage
enough to overcome worries and beg healing from the Lord
in the church? If we seek sacramental reconciliation, Jesus will
surely reply, “Yes, of course.” Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2000, OCP.
A QQUICKCK CK JJJOURNEYEY EY TTTHROUGHGH GH THETHE E MMMASSASS This is the last of an 11-part series, “A Quick Journey Through the Mass” adapted from Matthew Kelly’s book, Rediscover Catholicism.
He says “I hope to unveil some of the meanings that too often remain unknown and hidden, and instruct you about ways you can
become more actively engaged throughout the Mass.” Understanding the parts of Mass will help us be a more fully active, conscious
and participative people – something that the Church asks us to be.
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST: this is the “center and the summit of the entire celebration” and consists of the Eucharistic Prayer,
Consecration, The Our Father and Sign of Peace, and Communion. It is the Holiest, most sacred time of Mass and should be
observed without distractions of people leaving church or coming back in.
THANKSGIVING: These moments of reflection after receiving the Eucharist can be extremely powerful if we make ourselves present
to them. The fruits of Holy Communion include unity with Jesus, nourishment for the spiritual life, a hunger for virtue, a desire to
do the will of God, cleansing from past sins, a fanning of the flames of Christian love, grace to avoid sin in the future, sensitivity to
the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and a desire to know God more intimately.
ENGAGE: For these precious moments when Christ is so mysteriously present in you, kneel or sit, close your eyes, and just
thank God in your own words for all the blessings in your life. Name them specifically – people, places, things, and
opportunities for which you are grateful. Allow your heart to fill and overflow with gratitude.
CONCLUDING RITES: The concluding rites are made up of the Final Blessing and the Dismissal.
FINAL BLESSING: On the way into church we blessed ourselves with the Sign of the Cross. Before the Gospel we blessed
our mind, our lips, and our heart. Now we receive a blessing.
ENGAGE: Bow your head, close your eyes, and allow the words of the Final Blessing to penetrate the very depths of
your being.
THE DISMISSAL: The Mass takes its name from this final statement: “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your
life.” Ite, missa est is a Latin phrase that means “Go, you are sent.”
ENGAGE: In this final moment of the Mass we are being sent on a mission to light up the ways of this
world with the love of Christ, a love that is willing to sacrifice for others, a love that knows no limits. As
you leave Church and return to the world, consider how you might live out your Christian mission this
week.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS Our small group survived their individual third interviews
and are now ready for Lent just as the rest of the parish also
prepares for making change in their lives during the time of
Lent. We focus on the Paschal Mystery, in which we see the
sadness and darkness of certain times but always continue
hoping for the glory of the light and the resurrection time
that follows. We ask for prayers for all of us as we struggle to
make the changes required in our lives in order to truly
follow Jesus and to know and follow God’s will for our lives.

Forgiven explores the grace and healing offered in Confession and
shows how this sacrament of mercy reveals the depth and bounty
of God’s love. By looking at God’s revelation of his mercy in
Scripture and making a step-by-step examination of the Rite
itself, Forgiven communicates God’s invitation to each one of us to
come experience his indescribable love in the Sacrament of

LENT: The Evil Stops Here
Lent is a season in which we prepare for Easter, the high point of the Christian
year. Over the centuries, Lent has become a special time for fasting, abstinence,
communal and private prayer, self-discipline, serving others, sturdy, reflection
and penance. The whole Church re-examines its priorities, to leave sin and self-
love behind and intensify our love and service of God and others.
The conversion requires changes both in our inner attitudes and our outer
actions. Just as Jesus confronted the powers of evil that held his world in their
grasp, so we too must get involved in that struggle to eliminate evil’s domination
over us and our lives. Every day we must make the hard choice to eliminate evil and bring good. If we each began to refuse to
introduce any new evil and injustice into the world, then the kingdom of God that Jesus envisioned, preached and died for
would start right now to become a reality for ourselves and those around us. So this Lent let us take a look in the mirror each
morning and tell ourselves that now, with God’s help, “The evil stops here.”
FASTING FOR PEACE
In their 1983 pastoral letter, The Challenge of Peace, the U.S. Catholic bishops invited the
Christian community to fast during Lent for the cause of peace, which we might again do
this year. “We call upon our people voluntarily to do penance on Friday by eating less
food and by abstaining from meat. This return to a traditional practice of penance, once well observed in the U. S. church,
should be accompanied by works of charity and service toward our neighbors. Each Friday should be a day significantly
devoted to prayer, penance and almsgiving for peace.”
LENTEN GUIDES FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE
The Church teaches that Catholics in good health are to observe the following practices during Lent unless for some serious
reason they are unable to do so. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the
Fridays of Lent.
Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not equal the
main meal. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat. The Easter
fast must be kept sacred and should be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday, and where possible should be prolonged
throughout Holy Saturday so that the faithful may attain the joys of Easter Sunday.

PEACE & SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE Our Santa Maria de la Paz Peace and Social Justice
Committee voted at our February meeting to donate
$1000.00 each to the Interfaith Community Shelter and to
Camp Corazones. As many of our parish already know, the
Interfaith Community Shelter is faithfully supported by
volunteer workers from the parish who serve meals two
weeks during the year to the homeless, many from our own
community who are among the poorest of the poor for
various reasons. We are also fortunate to be able to have
two members from our parish on the board for the Interfaith
Community Shelter, which is unlike any homeless shelter in
the country because of its support from twenty or so various
faith communities who provide meals and check-in services
during the season. The Interfaith Community Shelter also
provides summer services for women and children and their
numbers continue growing because the need has escalated.
Camp Corazones is a four day summer camp for children
affected or infected by HIV/AIDS and is staffed entirely by
volunteers from the community. Volunteers are always
welcome to help with this camp. Call Bernadette in the
office for additional information. Join the Knights of Columbus THIS
FRIDAY, February 16th, for a Fry-Day
Night Lenten Fish Fry at the Social
Hall. Cost is $10.00 per person.
