1 - SUBJECT
This technical note aims at defining for Diesel enginesthe acceptance criteria of connecting rod shells andshafting bearing shells when performing a visualinspection.
2 - GENERAL
2.1 - Terminology and geometry of bearing shells
2.2 - Structure of three layer compound bearingshells
The bearing shells are made up of three materiallayers :
- a steel supporting shell,
- a babbit metallic layer based on aluminium orcupro-lead,
- a bearing layer usually based on lead-tin.
In some cases, the babbit metal and the bearing layerare separated by a nickel dam.
A tin flash provides a protection for the bearing shells.
1 - OBJET

Seizing of the bearing shell.
Mark of the oil duct on the back of the bearing shell.
- Rebuter les coussinets présentant ce défaut.Discard the bearing shells showing this defect.
3.7 - Bearing face at the level of the positioning lug
REASONS
- Misaligned lug in relation to the bore hollow.
4 - GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSEMBLINGTHE BEARING SHELLS
4.1 - Replacement of bearing shells
If a half bearing shell (lower or upper) is discarded, the whole set must be replaced with a new one, suchas it is supplied in spare parts.
4.2 - Bearing shell inspection before installation
4.2.1 - Stretch loss
The diameter at section of the non-stretched bearingshells is higher than the diameter of the bore desi-gned for their engagement, wich compells to stretchthem so as to place them.
A bearing shell that has already been used, shall needa least mounting effort than when it was new, howeverno effort requirement at all would be abnormal.Should this occur, the bearing shell will have to bediscarded.
3.7 - Portage au niveau de la languette depositionnement
CAUSES

Sharp wear ; maybe an incipient seizing in the slidingsurface at the level of the lug.
- Rebuter le coussinet.Discard the bearing shell.
4.2.2 - Bearing face
A non squeezed bearing shell placed in its housingmust bear on the section part and should show a cor-rect bearing face. A bearing face defect of the bearingshell implies its replacement.
4.3 - Preparation before mounting
- Clean the crankshaft, the connecting rod, the insidepart of the engine, the oil filter casing and oil circu-lation pipes.
- Free the new bearing shells from their preservationcompounds (oil, grease). First of all, they must becleaned with diesel oil and the preservation com-pound must be removed with a brush. Air-dry thebearing shells (cloth forbidden).
- Clean the bearing shell housings with use of dieseloil and air-dry them.
- Oil only the inside face of bearing shells. The backmust imperatively bear dry in the housings.
- Check the crankshaft journal condition and oil it.
4.4 - Bearing shell positioning
Position bearing shell by means of a positioning lug.
4.2.2 - Portage

4.5 - Bearing shell tightening
- Observe the procedure and the tightening valuesgiven into the maintenance manuals.
The bearing reliability depends mostly on thetightening quality. The non-compliance with thetightening procedure can lead to a serious brea-king-down.
5 - GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR STORING THEBEARING SHELLS
- The bearing shells are delivered mated (lower andupper half bearing shells). To comply with theassembly instructions, do not unmatch the halfbearing shells.
- The bearing shell sets should be stored on edgeand in the originate packaging.
- Bearing shells piling-up is forbidden, since itentails deformations.

VALVE STEM END (PA - PC)
This aspect may appear on the end of the inlet andexhaust valve stems.
When the valve is slow to close or is jammed open nodoubt due to fouling or sticking of the stem in itssealed guide, the end of the stem may show signs ofwear or impact. In this case :
- for the PC engines only where the lubricating oilsystem is separate, make sure that the oil is of therequired grade and that it is changed regularly,
- check the wear on the rocker arm bushes.
CONCLUSION : - hone any marks which are not too pronounced.- discard heavily marked valves.
