PASADENA, Calif. (January 1, 1924) —Washingtonmissedafieldgoal“byascantthreefeet”astimeexpiredandtheHuskiessettledfora14–14tiewiththeheavilyfavoredMidshipmenoftheNavalAcademyinthe1924RoseBowl,playedbefore40,000fans .

TheHuskies,coachedtoa10–1recordcomingintothegamebythird-yearcoachEnochBagshaw,hadtofightbacktwice,fallingbehind7–0earlyandlatertrailing14–7tothewell-drilledMiddiesofAnnapolis .TheNavalAcademy(5–1–1)usedasophisticatedpassingattack,astylenotseenbeforeontheWestCoast,toconfusetheHuskydefenseinthefirsthalf .Navycompletedall11passesitattemptedinthefirsthalf,andhit14inarowbeforetheHuskiesmanagedtostopone .Navycompleted16-of-20fortheday .

Navyopenedthescoringatthestartofthesecondperiodona20-yardpassfromquarterbackIraMcKeetohalfbackCarlCullen .Navydominatedthefirstperiodwithitsunorthodoxpassingoffense,completingsixtosses,butwasunabletoscorebeforetimeexpiredintheperiod .TheMidshipmenusedashort,two-handed,basketballtossforthebulkoftheirpassingattack .

TheTrojans(7–2)endedWashington’sperfectseason(4–0)byupsettingtheheavilyfavoredHuskies,29–0,withfourtouchdownpassestouncoveredreceiversinfrontof68,000attheRoseBowl .EarlierintheseasontheSouthernCaliforniateamlosttothe4thAirForceFlyers,35–0,whileWashingtondefeatedthissameclubhandily,27–7 .Becauseofalackofopponentsduringwartime,theRoseBowlgamewasthefirstactivityintwomonthsforcoachPestWelch’sWashingtonHuskies .

Washingtoncontrolledthefirstperiod,twicedrivingdeepintoTrojanterritory,butwasunabletoconvertthedrivesintopoints .WashingtoncouldnotrunagainsttheUSClineinsidethe40andwasunabletomountapassingattacktheentireday,completingonlyfivetossesfor51yardswiththreeinterceptions .Rolesreversedinthesecondperiod,astheTrojanscontinuedtoattempttorunagainstWashington’slargerdefensivelinewithlittlesuccess .
