Messages From Fr. Mike

April 5, 2015 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

Alleluia, Christ our Lord is risen from the dead! Easter Sunday is the most joyful day of the entire Church year, as we gather in our beautiful church to celebrate the

fact that our Savior is not dead but alive—he has overcome sin and death and opened for us the way to eternal life. May you and your families experience fully the joy of this Easter season. With all the lovely flowers and decorations, our church looks especially beautiful for today’s celebration, and I want to thank all who worked so hard to get everything just right for our Holy Week and Easter services. I also want to thank our liturgical ministers who assisted

us in any capacity. We are truly blessed here at St. Mary’s to have so many wonderful and caring parishioners. Also, the names of our Easter flower memorials are listed in our bulletin today, and our Easter Masses are being offered for all whose names were submitted. Next Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday, and our parish has been honored this year to be chosen to host a regional Divine Mercy celebration in our church. It will begin at 2 PM on April 12th with Stations of the Cross, Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet and Prayer, followed by a special Mass at 3 PM. A relic of St. Faustina will be venerated after the Mass, and a time of fellowship will follow in our school hall. Come and rejoice in the precious gift of God’s mercy! In preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday, a novena is presently underway, with Masses in our church Monday thru Friday at 7 PM along with the Divine Mercy prayer and chaplet. Please note that the 7 PM weekday Masses this week will replace the usual 6:30 PM Masses. St. Mary’s is looking for some new altar servers to assist us at our Masses and parish celebrations. Deacon Gary Richardson and I will lead training classes in our church on two consecutive nights, April 21–22, at 7 PM for boys and girls in grades 4 – 8. Servers can choose the weekend Mass time which is most convenient for their family. Serving at God’s altar is a beautiful privilege and a great opportunity for young people to serve their parish and take a more active role in our Masses. Finally, back on March 22nd we received $11,931 in our regular collection plus $1,295 for Interfaith Caregivers and their ministry to the homebound. Thank you! Our Palm Sunday and Holy Land totals will be reported next week. And a very special thank-you to everyone who contributed so generously in today’s Easter offering. I join Fr. Felix, our deacons and parish staff in wishing all of you a Happy and Blessed Easter!

Parish Office Closed Our parish office will be closed on Monday April 6th and will reopen on Tuesday April 7th.

Parish Debt — Update Since July 2014, we have been able to reduce our parish debt by $120,000. At this time, we still have a carryforward debt balance of approximately $430,000. Our debt collections for the present fiscal year total $27,980 so far. Current operating revenue exceeds expenses, and our monthly debt reduction collections have been extremely helpful. I wish to thank all of our faithful parishioners who continue to financially support our church and parish activities.

REMEMBRANCES OF YORE . . . . . . FOR ST. MARY’S PARISH & SCHOOL

Our Parish written history was last updated in 1945 –seventy (70) years ago!! As a preliminary first step, we are looking for interested volunteers/sleuths of all ages to reminisce, and if captivated by such projects, to help in gathering information on these unwritten decades. Perhaps you have pictures, souvenirs, memories, stories, or information on parish life, parish organizations of the by-gone and more recent past years, your school days at St. Mary’s School, or fun and service at various events/devotions that have been a part of the fabric of St. Mary’s past. Maybe you know and keep in touch with former parishioners who have moved from the area. If you would like more details or have material or knowledge you may wish to share, please call Stephanie at 609-291-1816.

Rosary and Altar Society News “Knowing Everything Depends On His Will - He is bringing me to understand deeply how everything depends on His will, and how He allows certain difficulties precisely for our merit, so that our fidelity might be clearly manifest. And through this, I have been given strength for suffering and self-denial. ‘Jesus, give me an intellect, a great intellect, for this only, that I may understand You better; because the better I get to know You, the more ardently will I love You’.

Legend of the Easter Eggs Early Sunday morning, Mary Magdalen went to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus. Because she expected it to be a long day, she brought with her a basket of eggs for her lunch. But, when she arrived at the tomb, Mary Magdalen discovered that it was empty; the body of Jesus was gone! Shocked, she started to set her basket down so that she could better explore the tomb. But then something caught her eye. Her white eggs had miraculously turned the colors of the rainbow! (A legend or fable is a story that doesn’t pretend to be historical, but simply teaches a lesson. The events surrounding the resurrection of Jesus gave rise to many legends.)

The Church of St. Gregory the Great presents —

“Do Not Be Ashamed of the Gospel: Bearing Moral Witness in the Public Square”, a lecture by Princeton Professor Robert George, on April 7, 2015 at 7:00PM in the Parish Center, 4280 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square. A year ago, Professor Robert George’s keynote address at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast drew national attention. He challenged Catholics to bear witness boldly to the sanctity of human life and the conjugal understanding of marriage, despite the opprobrium that might come our way for proclaiming these profound but not-always-welcome moral truths. He will revisit the main themes of his Prayer Breakfast address in his lecture at the Church of St. Gregory the Great, exploring the relationship between the obligation to bear moral witness and the concepts of Christian discipleship and the universal call to holiness. Robert P. George is McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. He is currently a vice chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom and holds degrees in law and theology from Harvard University and a doctorate in philosophy of law from Oxford University, in addition to many honorary degrees. He is the author or editor of numerous books in the fields of constitutional law, ethics, and legal and political philosophy. Professor George is an internationally known speaker and TV/radio guest.

Following the Mass and Laying On of Hands, a reception for Father and the team will take place in the cafeteria. For more info call Pat Baylog at 298-4249.
