This is my family (left), this is my

family on camp (right). One director told me he’d rather burn out for Jesus than rust out. I sure hope I don’t have to choose.

But seriously, why is burn out particularly common in Christian ministry leadership? Dr. Grant Mullen defines burnout as “the state of mental exhaustion from long term stress. The most common symptoms are chronic fatigue, loss of future vision or enthusiasm for the job and the feeling of being trapped on a treadmill.”

I’ve seen colleagues in missions, pastorate and camp ministry burn out. I myself have tasted seasons of burning the candle at both ends in my 14 years of living, raising a family of 7, and ministering on site at Bible Camp.

Boards and directors tend to hire and celebrate people who can produce and accomplish. And here’s Spring, the busiest quarter of Bible Camp. In fact, I’m still in my office on a Friday evening typing this overdue article. Ha!

I was recently privileged with one pastor who took time to share his heart. There’s always 15 more emails, another $10,000 to raise, the next conflicts to

navigate, ongoing capital project to check in on, and communication behind everywhere. “Just because there’s a need, doesn’t mean you’re the guy God is calling to meet it.”

Sometimes our camp job is not really clear and everybody is expecting something a leader should be doing. This sets me up perfectly to disappoint somebody all the time. “Feedback Please” is a constant

button I seem to wear. Plus the expectation to recruit and lead volunteers – what CAN I reasonably expect without pay? Sometimes it’s confusion about which hat to wear: Teacher? Administrator? Fundraiser? Counselor? Mechanic? Politician? Janitor? And what are healthy boundaries? Do I have to always be available to everyone?

Here’s some recent inspirations to begin helping me not just survive in camp ministry, but thrive.

What amazing folks who

make Bible Camp a relevant, life changing experience! They are dedicated and forfeit lifestyle options to serve and give. And they’re blessed! It begs the questions. Why don’t they take extra vacations? Eat out more? Pursue more hobbies? Invest more in financial security? I suspect one answer would be a great love for God who calls each of us to seek FIRST the Kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

Each summer is an amazing story of their partnership. Every spring, I ask partners to pray fervently for the Lord of the Harvest to send workers out into the harvest field. God provided 78 volunteer

staff and 49 work crew to run camp. Bible Camp is ideal to find God’s unique suitability in each individual. Cabin Leaders teach, Work Crew serve, Cooks feed the flock, Speakers feed the flock, nurses patch up the flock, program staff lead, videographers keeps the camera rolling, maintenance staff fix, woodchucks fill the wood shed … each person vital.

I also ask partners to pray earnestly that God would open doors for the Gospel. In answer to their prayers, a record number of campers arrived, each with a “God story” how they came to Bible Camp. We praise

God for the many campers counseled for salvation and many more counseled to better know and represent Jesus Christ.

Thank God for the donors, skilled workers, prayer warriors, and encouragers “behind the

scenes”. Bible Camp also needs partners who invest in the care for and capital

development of facilities & equipment. Last season, a local church donated and constructed a beautiful amphitheatre. This Fall and Winter, it was the Staff Residence expansion and renovation. 50 skilled volunteers have already invested a conservatively

estimated 4,600 hours.

For Jody & I, our parents have been our biggest

cheerleaders investing their faith, funds and friends. Jody’s folks have come from Arizona (recently California) the last 10 summers to lead food services. Tom’s folks have been involved in maintenance, construction and cooking from long before I became director 14 years ago. We thank God upon every remembrance of each vital partner.

unpleasant tasks

Dr. Grant Mullen weighs in on preventing burn out:

“The most important truth to embrace is that it is not your church (camp). It's God's. You are the shepherd not the owner…

Set boundaries so you don't get too engulfed with other people's problems…

Burning Up or Burning Out? (continued from page 1)

The key to preventing burnout in ministry is Exodus 33:14, ‘My presence will go with you and I will give you rest.’

Effective ministry only takes place when God is present and active. When he is working, you can relax. When you make it your highest priority to live and work in God's presence he will refresh you daily.”
