Dot and Bill Grubler

We have a lot of snowbirds in our church community. They’re here until the cold days of winter arrive. That’s their cue to pack a suitcase and head south. There is a certain appeal to avoiding the ice and snow, but I don’t know if I’ll ever be a snowbird. I like watching the seasons change. From my office window I can see a beautiful West Virginia hill. Today it is covered with dense green leaves and I imagine it is providing some shade on a hot summer day. We all know the cycle and the changes in scenery that will happen in the course of a year. I find the changing seasons to be a transition that is a centering and consistent part of my life. Some changes are not as predictable and don’t include a slow and steady evolution. A good example would be the transfer of Monsignor Peterson. We expected to say goodbye in late August. But he was reassigned to the Cathedral before we had a chance to say a proper goodbye. Fortunately, he’s just a few miles away. If you’d like to send a note or card, his new address is Cathedral of St. Joseph, 1300 Eoff Street, Wheeling, WV 26003. The good news to the change is that Father Carlos has joined the St. Michael Parish family. If you haven’t already, I’m sure you’ll have a chance to meet him soon. We asked him if we could have a welcome reception and he humbly declined. However, we were able to talk him into a little soirée and the root beer float party was scheduled. There are only two ingredients in a root beer float: root beer and vanilla ice cream. That sounds pretty simple. I think another two ingredients that would make the event really special are Father Carlos and YOU! Please plan to join us for a float following the 11:30 Mass this Sunday, July 7. We will be floating in the school cafeteria.

COMMEMORATIVE MASS ASSOCIATION (CMA)

We remember in love those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith... The CMA is a special program which allows our parishioners and friends to remember their loved ones in a beautiful way. A total of 18 Masses will be celebrated for the repose of the souls of those inscribed in the Parish Commemorative Mass Association throughout the year of enrollment. The cost to enroll is $50. The bulletin will regularly list the names of those enrolled in the CMA. At the time of enrollment, you will receive a beautiful leatherette-type folder describing the Commemorative Mass Association. Please contact the Parish Office with any questions or to enroll someone in the CMA. --Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them Lord, and Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them and All the Souls of the Faithfully Departed.

Good Shepherd Nursing Home is in need of a few more Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to distribute Holy Communion to its residents. This takes about an hour or so, and usually is done between the hours of 9:00am and 11:30am. If you are willing to help out even once it will be greatly appreciated. It’s a beautiful sacrifice to make for our Catholic sisters and brothers who reside here. If you are interested or have any questions and would like to learn more about this opportunity to serve our elderly, please feel free to contact Fr. Paul Cabrita, S.M., the Chaplain at Good Shepard, 304-242-1093, ext 140.

Thank you so much!

Attention Men Who Like to Golf: It’s Spring! That means golf! The Knights of Columbus 504 would like to invite all Catholic men to join our golf club. We play every Thursday morning from May thru September at the Crispin Course. Our golf club is a scramble format so individual skills or lack thereof are not important. Forward tees are used for players over 70 and over 80. Lunch is provided afterward at the Knights of Columbus building on Edgington Lane and may possibly include a game of Euchre. So if you’re retired, semi-retired, or off work on some Thursdays, check us out. For more information call Bob Morgan at 304.242.5404 or Chuck Wagner at 304.242.3273.

FUNERALCHOIRMEMBERSNEEDED!Our parish is pleased to have a dedicated group of men and women who attend each Funeral Mass and assist in leading the music and sung prayer during the Mass. This ministry is very important as it provides not only musical support but is also a ministry of presence and prayer offered to support the family as they grieve and to pray for the repose of the soul of the deceased. We are in need of additional members to assist in this ministry – could you please help us? The choir gathers about 15-20 minutes before the Funeral Mass and then sings for the Mass. Choir members are notified by a phone tree when a funeral is scheduled. This is a wonderful ministry for those who are retired, but please know that all are welcome. If you are interested, please contact Clara White 304.242.2278 or Lucille Otte 304.242.3014.

Have you experienced divorce and would like to know more about the annulment process? Are you divorced and remarried outside the Catholic Church? Would you like to know how to make your marriage valid in the Church so you can receive the Sacraments again? Please contact Fr. Smay: 304-242-1560, x5 or [email protected] about the annulment process. Unfortunately, a lot of people have erroneous ideas about the process. It is doable and Father Smay will help you throughout the process.

Please pray for these men and women serving and those who have served our country in the

military, and for their families: ♦ Petty Officer First Class Eric J Auber, US

Navy ♦ Staff Sergeant Robert Michael Baker, US

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s high summer now, school is out, the pace of work slows, and some people drift away. There are visitors in the churches every summer, and familiar faces are “among the missing.” Some find the summer’s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the “sabbatical” rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They responded, “Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we cannot live.” By a curious coincidence, the appointed readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the experience of worship situated us in community, and evoked a commitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society’s life. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CANDLE OF PEACE

This candle burns in honor and in memory of survivors of sexual abuse.

We place them and their families under the protection of St. Joseph- father, just

man and protector of families.

GOD’S PROVIDENCE Today’s readings celebrate God’s providence. No matter how wonderful (or heartbreaking) our relationships are, God always provides for us. No one cares for us the way God does. Isaiah delights us with a deeply intimate image of God caring for us “as a mother comforts her child.” The prophet describes us not as the usual “children of God,” but as “babies.” We should not resist this image, but rejoice in it. Trusting in God’s care, we can all let down our guard and rest like infants in the lap of our mother. Saint Paul’s trust in God allows him to be at peace like this. He boldly declares that no one can “make troubles” for him, because he has given himself completely to Jesus. And when Jesus sends his disciples out to preach and heal, he challenges them not to provide for themselves, but to let faith be their guide. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Looking for a way for your family to help others?

Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center needs people to deliver meals to shut-ins. There are three different ways you could help.

Drivers are needed on Thursdays for a route that includes three downtown high rise apartment complexes for elderly people, and three private homes.

Drivers are needed one or two Saturdays a month to deliver the Pike route, which includes three senior citizen apartment complexes near St. Michael – Brookpark, Petroplus Tower and Welty Apartments - and six private homes.

Backup drivers are always needed. If you are flexible and willing to be called at the last minute if the regular driver can’t make it, please let Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center know.

Your family could do this, or you and a few neighbors could share a route. If you found four families, each family would only have to drive one route per month. Easy peasy! Volunteers pick up meals at the Neighborhood Center between 10:30am and 11:30am. The routes should take about an hour to complete. This is a wonderful way to thank God for all the blessings in our lives. If you can help, please call Keith Miller, the new Neighborhood Center volunteer coordinator, at 304.650.9608.
