Knight and Family of the Month The February Knight of the Month My choice as Knight of the Month for February 2017 is PGK Gene Zimmerman. Gene is a member of Saint Augustine Catholic Church and has honored our council to serve as Grand Knight for two consecutive terms. He is active as a 4th Degree Knight and is a Past Faithful Navigator. Gene’s resume of service is extensive. He is a longtime member of the Bishop Ireton Council Board of Directors and is currently and for many years the Building Manager. In this position Gene oversees rental of the Center and organizing use of the facility. Many long hours are invested and for this our council is very grateful. Gene’s compassion for the homeless is shown each month as he and his team prepare and serve lunch to the homeless at Tiffany Manor. He continues to cook at functions, is involved with the Spring Prom and Fall Fling, and recently organized our Valentine Dance. Gene daily shows his love of church, council, and patriotism to his country. It is with great pleasure I announce PGK Gene Zimmerman Bishop Ireton Council 6189’s Knight of the Month for February 2017. . (GK Jerry Duncan)

The February Family of the Month Loretta and Steve Boychuck are our February Family of the Month. Both are very involved in our council activities and continue to step up to assist whenever needed. Loretta is a money counter and a member of “Wings” at St. Augustine Catholic Church. She is also a vital asset and member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Steve currently holds the position of Chancellor as a council officer and is a member of the Bishop Ireton Council Board of Directors. Twice this year he has worked the Hospitality Suite during the State Quarterly meeting. Loretta as cashier and Steve with instant sales continually work on a bingo team. Both support and serve “God’s Children” at our annual Spring and Fall Fling. This is a family giving from their heart to support church, council, and community. It is my pleasure to announce Loretta and Steve Boychuck Bishop Ireton Council 6189 Family of the Month for February 2017. . (GK Jerry Duncan)

Ladies Auxiliary

Hi Ladies, Even though the hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Year’s is behind us, there are always projects to work on. The snow hit us hard in January. Being that we are in the

middle of winter, remember that everyone does not have plenty of heat or food. Please check on your friends and neighbors during the cold weather. Meetings were canceled and rescheduled. I would like to thank all of the Ladies that rearranged their schedules to be at the January meeting on the 15th. Thanks to Lynn

Meyer, Diane DePlato, Lynnette Clements and Jerri Pat MacPherson for volunteering to be our nominating committee in the election of officers for next year. Our Auxiliary has elected to have an inside yard sale as our final fundraiser for the year. The sale will be on March 25th inside the Bishop Ireton Center. So mark your calendars to come and find lots of treasures. Stay warm in body and heart. Blessings to All,

Linda Duncan President Ladies Auxiliary Council 6189

Ladies Auxiliary of the Month – December 2016

I am pleased to announce Debbie Hubley as Lady of the Month for January 2017. Debbie has volunteered to be our Sunshine Lady for this fraternal year. She has been very dedicated to sending out cards for birthdays, sympathy

and sickness. Debbie is a very active member of this council. She helps with the Fall Fling, the Spring Prom and Outreach in Love. When Debbie is not helping at the council, she is involved in sports and the Special Olympics. With her life full of work and friends and activities, I’m pleased

that Debbie takes the opportunity to be a member of Council 6189. I am pleased to name Debra Hubley the Lady of the Month for January 2017.

Little Angels Interment

The 4th Degree Knights do their part in easing some of that hurt through their Little Angels program. It is a sad occasion but the families are grateful for what the Sir Knights do for them. You never know how many babies are placed in one of the small caskets. The service is dignified and welcomed by the families. The next

interment of the little angels will be on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 9:30 a.m., hosted by the McMahon Assembly. Interment is at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1400 S. Randolph Street, Richmond, VA (Off Harrison Street, beside Riverview Cemetery. Please, try to attend at least one of the solemn ceremonies. You will not forget it.

Council Volunteers

Have you ever heard the saying "Volunteers are our lifeline"? It certainly is and help is always needed. You can volunteer. At Bishop Ireton Center, without you, we cannot get things done. We need you for our events; we need you to help do the little things that are necessary at all our events such as kitchen help and certainly there are the Bingo teams that always in need of help. We depend on so few to keep doing everything. A few hours of your time helping out is time well spent. If you are asked, and we do that all the time, please step forward to do your part. KOVAR is fast approaching. The month of May could be the month for this event. This is a big funding event to help those less fortunate than we are. When you are ask, please sign up for one of the teams or call your team captain and pick a slot. It will save time for the KOVAR Team captains. Our Public Service Awards Dinner is a special event that has grown over the years. PGK Tom Hoof has chaired the program since its inception. He needs someone to take the job. Call Tom and volunteer. He will assist you where he can and for this April event, you can work alongside him to learn the ropes. Maybe you are quite adept at computers and WebPages. Would you like to take over the website or do the newsletter? You have talents that are needed. Please step up.

Volunteer Dinner

All Bingo and/or Brunswick stew volunteers and their spouses or guests are invited to the Bishop Ireton Center on Thursday Feb 9, 2017 at 6:30 PM. We are having a “volunteer appreciation dinner” followed by a short meeting and a game for fun. The meeting will consist of an overview of 2016 bingo and what to expect going forward. There will be a report on the outcome of the Brunswick stew sales and the status of our bingo games. Please make an effort to be there for an evening of enjoyment. Please RSVP by February 5, 2017. Please call Frank Cuffe at 804-549-9431 or email him at [email protected] or call Don Beichner at 804-639-9418 or via email at [email protected]. (Frank Cuffe)

Military Retiree News...

If any of our veterans are having a problem with their “identities”, read this. There are currently about 5,000 transgender veterans receiving their healthcare from VA. Transgender people, according to Wikipedia, are people who have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from their assigned sex. VA provides gender transition counseling, evaluations for hormone therapy, and evaluations for gender transition surgeries. VA offers training to help VA healthcare providers get up to speed on how to successfully interact with their transgender patients and how to address their sometimes unique healthcare concerns. For more information, read the VA VAntage Point Blog and visit the VA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Veteran Care webpage. Now if they would just fully help with the Agent Orange problems…

After two years of study and debate, the Department of Defense has made a policy change, effective next November, to allow 16 million honorably discharged veterans to shop online for discounted military exchange products.

Peter K. Levine, acting undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, signed a memorandum Wednesday announcing the benefit expansion, effective Veterans’ Day Nov. 11, and giving Congress the required 30 days’ notice before actions begin to implement the plan.

Months of preparation are needed to make e-shopping portals more robust and to allow the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) time to create software for verifying veterans’ status using Department of Veterans Affairs records.

Several million vets already are eligible to shop in exchanges — on base or online — because they are active or reserve component retirees, or 100-percent disabled from service-connected injuries or ailments, or Medal of Honor recipients. Thomas C. Shull, chief executive officer of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, led a three-year quest to expand online exchange shopping to all honorably-discharged veterans with access to computers. The online benefit does not extend to veterans’ dependents, although spouses and family members theoretically could use the authorized customer’s log-in credentials, given the nature of an online shopping benefit.

Charity (Bingo) Status Year Ending 2016

Update: Our charity status has not changed since last month. Hopefully, things will pick now that the holidays are over. Ten charity motions were published, read, and passed as of the Council meeting on December 11. While these have been approved for funding, no checks were written at the Council meeting pending an end-of-year bingo revenue balance review later this month upon Frank Cuffe’s return

from vacation. The purpose of the review is to ensure that sufficient funds remain to pay escrow (prize) obligations and meet our operating expenses, while, at the same time, focusing on the State Gaming Commission mandate to contribute 10% of our annual revenues to charity. Those charity obligations that cannot be funded by 2016 revenues will be deferred to early 2017. Contact Rick Brennan @ 748-3706 for further information.

February Charity Requests...

St. Augustine Church Choir $500.00

Charity Requests Forms…

Do you have a charity request? Pick up a form in the BIC office, complete it and present it to the Charity Committee. All requests are presented to the Charity Committee and if clarification is needed, being at the meeting will clear up any doubts. The forms are also on the Council Website. If funds are available and your request meets the requirements, a charity request will be granted. You can also download a charity form or email me and I will send you a form. It cannot be any simpler than that. Questions regarding charity requests should be addressed to PGK Tom Hoof.

Kudos...

Kudos to Brother Rick DePlato and his wife, Diane on being selected Supreme Family of the Month for November 2016. Rick and Diane were notified by letter from Carl A. Anderson, Supreme Knight that they were chosen as one of 100 families selected at random from a variety of many entries that were received at the Supreme Council Office. Rick and Diane were also awarded a Holy Family Gift for their home (see photo at right). Each does a lot for Council 6189 and the DePlatos were also selected by Grand Knight Jerry Duncan as Council 6189's Family of the Month for December 2016. Both Rick and Diane are very active in many of the council's socials and St. Augustine Church. Congratulations to each are certainly in order. Kudos to Rick and Diane.

From the Financial Secretary's Desk....

February, 2017. A big thank you to all who have responded to the 2017 dues assessment and mailed a check or paid by cash. Your council cannot function without its Brothers’ monetary assistance. If you have not yet paid your dues, please do so at your earliest convenience. Please welcome James Rutledge, a new Field Agent serving Brother Knights and their families in the Richmond area. He will be joining Council 12525 at Saint Joseph’s Parish on Buford Road. James can be contacted at 804-516-8074 to help protect you and your family and to also secure your financial future. This month there are a couple of council events that you should keep in mind. The first is a bingo dinner and meeting to be held on February 9th. This is for all council members and families that volunteer to help out with Wednesday night bingo. The second event is a Valentine Dance which will be held on Saturday, February 11th from 8 – 11 PM at BIC. Tickets are only $10 per person and the entertainment will be furnished by the Midnighters. In closing, I want to remind everyone to recruit a new member. Everything we do depends upon membership.

KOVAR

Our KOVAR program is not too far in the distant. Some of the team captains are already preparing their rosters. We are looking at May 2017 to conduct the event, probably around the 19-20 time frame. That will mirror the dates from last year. We cannot have a successful year without your help. This program benefits “God’s Children”

Public Service Awards Dinner

The Public Service Awards night will be here soon. Putting on this event is a task that only PGK Tom Hoof knows how to do. He has been doing that for many years and is now looking for a brother knight to replace him. Or like the Marines – a “few good men”. He will provide the training. We already have the menu for the April 29, 2017 event. For this year, the Public Service Awards Dinner is going to consist of Salad, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Potatoes, Green Beans, Rolls and Dessert, all prepared by Lynette Clements and you know what a fine cook she is. The details of this event will be published either next month or in the Informer April issue.

Lynette is asking for volunteers because she could use the extra help in the kitchen for anyone that cooks or to help serve the meal and of course, clean-up the kitchen. She does not ask for much and we should accommodate her needs. You may contact Lynette at: [email protected] or 804-937-1052

Also PGK Tom Hoof will certainly need help with the set up at the Bishop Ireton Center. Those details will be forthcoming via email or the March Informer issue. As always your help is needed.

2017 Events…

Council 6189 host many events throughout the fraternal year. Some are to raise funds for the Council or in the case of the Bishop Ireton Center; we use the Bingo Games to keep our council and BIC viable. It takes many volunteers and some do more than others to help out. We wish we could get more of our members to participate. That would make it easier upon all. They seem to never come forward. We don’t see them or hear from them. It would be nice to have them among us.

There is the Valentines Dance in February (details in the flyer on the right side). It takes a lot planning to coordinate. Fortunately, we have PGK Gene Zimmerman who knows how to get such an event started. He of course will need help. Some of us do not dance so we do not attend. Others look for such events for the social aspect and that suits them. Everyone has an an ownership.

Brother Frank Cuffe and PGK Don Beichner have organized the Appreciation Dinner. Frank is grateful to the many volunteers who help with the Bingo Games and the Brunswick Stew Process. This is their way of showing gratitude for those who help over and over at these events. The dinner takes a lot of preparation and kitchen help. Maybe you can help out. Just ask Frank or Don what needs to be done. Lynette Clements could also give a few hints since she is preparing the meal.

The Public Service Awards Night is a special annual event that has been hosted by Council 6189 for many years. It is no common event and it takes special preparations to make it happen. PGK Tom Hoof is an authoritative resource since he has been the “go to” person since its inception. Now he needs help. He is asking that someone else take over the job of making this program available. What we do as a council in this regard reflects highly on us. It is certainly time to pass the baton on this one. All we need is someone to step forward. YOU can be the one.

There is always the struggle to get Council Officers to fill the chair. This is a needed task and soon you will be asked to fill them for next fraternal year. What will you say when asked?

And as I said in last month’s Informer…as always, there is a special group of people we have come to depend upon for assistance in our council affairs. Where would we be without the support of our council ladies? During the year 2016 they were always by our side doing something. They are the one common denominator among all our council actions. It is the steadfast support that we receive from our Ladies Auxiliary that gives us the strength to do what we do as a council. God bless them and Happy Valentine’s Day!

As 2017 is now upon us and going into our second month, we shall start a repeat of these past accomplishments and look for newer ones to do. We ended the year with our

Coats for Kids project, our annual Veterans Christmas party and a monthly program of feeding the homeless. That is a multitude of blessings and memories we cherish and hold close to our hearts. We do have good reason to continue on for another year. We are so blessed. (Buddy)
