Arizona looks to make a penny on copper industry

Copper’s value is on the rise, and equipped with new mining technology, Arizona has a promising future in producing the nation’s copper.

The value of copper hit $3.20 in mid 2014, before taking a dive to $2.50 in early 2015. It took a significant dip into an all time low of $1.60 in 2016. Now, copper value is rising again, passing $3 for the first time since 2014, according to the NASDAQ stock exchange.

Arizona produces 65 percent of the nation’s copper, leading the copper industry in the U.S. As mining continues to become economically feasible, new mine sites have been proposed across the state.

New technology for mining had made the production process more sustainable after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency set the Clean Air Act into place in 1970 and the Clean Water Act in 1972.

“We better hope it’s very sustainable, because mining is in the foundation of society,” said Brad Ross, the Co-director of the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources.

Ross said technology to pull copper from the ground is always changing and improving as new technology is created. Copper has become a staple not only in its consumption, but also as a source for jobs and the economics of the state.

“We use the most up-to-date technology, and control on

technology helps sustainability.” Ross said, describing methods modern technology used to keep environmental impact low.

Ross said technology developed for mining today helps keep dust down to keep the air clean, and keeps water clean through checking for water contaminants.

There are five proposed copper mining sites in Arizona, including the Resolution Copper Project, Rosemont Copper, Florence Copper, Gunnison Copper and Mineral Park Copper Mine on the way, according to Suzanne Kinney from the Arizona Mining Association.

Mining companies have faced the challenge statewide of producing copper without doing significant damage to the environment around the site.

Save the Scenic Santa Ritas is a non-profit organization, which assembled in 1996 to protect the scenic area on and around the Santa Rita mountains. The proposed Rosemont mine has challenged the group because of the environmental impact it would have on the region.

“It would be a regional disaster,” said Gayle Hartmann, the president of Save the Scenic Santa Ritas.

Hartmann said the new mine would impact clean water, air quality, local economics and traffic.

The organization is against the proposed Rosemont mine, and has worked with members of the community to ensure education and awareness is spread on potential harm the project might cause.

“The damage is permanent.” Hartmann said, “We as human beings need to learn to coexist with our environment.”

Hartmann said Save the Scenic Santa Ritas is working to educate members of the surrounding communities of the harm mining can cause to the environment.

The Florence Copper Project, a Florence based copper mining project, is using new technology in-situ copper recovery in order to preserve the environment above the bedrock. The company is looking to tap into copper in the Historic Copper Corridor in Arizona.

The project is in permitting stages and will then enter a 1 to 2 year testing process.

“What makes us unique is we do this in-situ copper recovery,” said Stacy Gramazio, the Manager of Communications for Florence Copper.

The process will leave very little environmental damage

when the mining wells are removed. The in-situ recovery method digs beneath the bedrock and injects a solution, which dissolves the copper and allows it to be pulled up through the ground.

This method will allow the company to recover 55 million pounds of copper a year the first six years of the project and 85 million pounds of copper a year the final 14 years of the project. The project is expected to last around 25 years, following passing regulation and a testing period.

The Florence Copper Project is expected to create over 700 direct and indirect jobs in Arizona, with 480 jobs directly related to the mine. The Florence Copper Project is expected to bring a $3.4 billion in economic uplift to the state, with $2.1 billion economic uplift to Pinal County.

According to Kinney, the hard rock mining industry has created 31,800 jobs in the state, with 12,000 directly related to the mines. In 2014, mining brought a total economic impact of $4.29 billion.

While mining is deeply rooted in the history of Arizona, it won’t be returning to any of the historic mining boomtowns any time soon. The proposed mining sites are new sites built with new technology to pull untapped

Superior’s Gabriel Castillo saved his best for last. The sophomore defensive lineman made the play in the closing seconds that prevented a game-tying two-point conversion by Trivium Prep, preserving the No. 3-ranked Panthers’ 36 – 34 quarterfinal playoff victory last Saturday night at Superior Memorial Field. With the win, the Panthers advance to the 1A State Playoff Semifinals for the third-straight year. “We just had to go harder than them (on the conversion play),” Castillo told the Superior Sun afterwards. “We needed to win that play, we did that, and got the (win). It was a hard-fought game by both teams.” Superior, which held leads of 12, 18 and 16 points during the game, was leading 36 – 28 with just more than two minutes remaining in the final quarter and a facing a fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line. Junior quarterback Steven Ybarra’s touchdown run was nullified on a holding penalty and his pass on the following play was incomplete, giving the Crimson Knights a final chance. The Knights took advantage, benefitting from a personal foul call against the Panthers before completing a 33-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left in the game. Castillo made the play of the game on the ensuing conversion attempt. Trivium Prep, which had not lost since its season-opening loss to this Panthers’ team, outnumbered Superior nearly two to one. Considering those two factors, in addition to a depleted Panthers’ roster due to injuries, including defensive standout and top receiver Cedric Mendoza, and the difficulty of beating the same team twice in a season, there was joyous relief following the win. “Gutsy, that’s the word I would use,” Superior head coach Ryan Palmer said after the game about his team’s performance. “I’m so proud of these kids and the heart they showed.”“I’m so happy for them to get to experience a night like (Saturday’s), where even when things looked gloom we never gave up,” he continued. “We had to make one last play to make and we made it.” Ybarra and freshman Adam Navarrette were almost exclusively the extent of the Panthers’ offense, yet the Knights’ couldn’t contain either. “It was all about execution and everybody doing their job,” Palmer said. “We had guys down, it was no secret, but our kids stepped up and did what we asked them do to do.” Ybarra, the Region Player of the Year, rushed for 229 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries. He completed 10-of-17 passes for 81 yards with a touchdown pass to junior Jesus Castellanos. “I’m so proud of our whole team,” said Ybarra. “We gave everything we had (Saturday) night. We knew we had to play with heart to win this game.” Navarrette, a member of the two-time Central Jr. High League Championship team, is used to the pressure of the playoffs. November is a great time to “fall” in love with a new book- especially when it’s free! Since the first “Reading is Cool” Book Fair, held this past July, was such a big success, with almost 600 books going home with kids of all ages, “We are going to do it again!” says Superior resident Lauren Figdore. During the Second Friday event on November 10th, from 4-7 pm, there will be a whole new assortment of hundreds of FREE gently used books for children from preschool through high school age. A limited number of books for teachers will also be available. Sue Anderson, president of the Superior Chamber of Commerce, is again happy to donate space at the Chamber office at 165 Main Street for this free event. Save Money

Reading helps to develop so many skills- vocabulary, creativity, problem-solving, focus and confidence. It’s fair to say there’s a lot of excitement in Pinal County about all the new roads and freeways in Propositions 416 and 417 on the November 7th ballot.

Better infrastructure means more jobs, both during construction and the new businesses and customers that flock to new roads. That’s why so many Chambers of Commerce support a Yes vote.

Better roads mean better public safety according to Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer and Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb. And better roads mean safer roads. That’s critical as I-10 gets worse and fatalities and serious traffic accidents increase everywhere, including several this month.

More freeways lift home values. That’s according to top Arizona real estate expert Jim Belfiore.

But it’s more than fair to ask if the countywide sales tax is raised by one half of one percent to pay for all of these improvements, will the money be spent wisely?

YES! That’s because of new safeguards built into the propositions themselves. Indeed, the plan now before voters was demanded by the people, frustrated with traffic throughout our county. And the people also demanded a seat at the table to see that the money would be spent wisely, if these propositions pass. That’s why a Citizens’ Oversight Committee, to be made up of citizens in incorporated and unincorporated areas, will oversee the decisions and expenditures made by Mayors and Supervisors.

Propositions 416 and 417 are plans by the people, and for the people. And, if passed, the people will be able to hold the politicians accountable.

This is just one more way, and one more reason, to keep Pinal County moving in the right direction.
