Can’t you just see it now? The family gathering at the

Thanksgiving table and enjoying all that delicious food? Think of it … the

It’s the Start of the Fall Holiday Season: Time to Think ‘Safety’stuffing, the pumpkin pie, the yummy mashed and sweet potatoes, the green bean casserole and the star of the feast the turkey!! But did you know that Thanksgiving is the day, out of all other days in the year, when most residential cooking fires occur? The U.S. Fire Administration reports that the number of residential building fire are more than double (2.3 times more) than the average number of fires in residential buildings on any other days during the year. According to the U.S Fire Administration the pattern of fires on Thanksgiving Day differ greatly from the national fire profile. It is

important to understand how fires on Thanksgiving Day differ from the over all fire profile in the United States. Do you know during what time period that most of the fires occur? Almost 48% of Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings happen between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when most people are preparing their scrumptious dinner. This time frame differs from the rest of the year when residential building fires caused by cooking peak during the “normal” dinnertime hours of 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Why is there such a huge time difference between cooking on Thanksgiving versus a

normal dinner time? It has to do with the amount of food being prepared. We cook way more food for the Thanksgiving feast than we do for our daily dinner meal. The U.S. Fire Administration further states that cooking was, by far, the leading cause of Thanksgiving Day residential fire at 77% with only 50% of residential building fires on any other day of the year. Add heating at 7% to those statistics as the next leading cause of residential fires on Thanksgiving. Most residential fires were limited to the room of origin and the object of origin, i.e. kitchen

and stove/oven. These statistics reflect fires that occurred between 2014 – 2016.

What should you do if a fire starts while you are preparing your

The Good Shepherd Christmas Store event is this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Good Shepherd Church at the bottom of school hill. “We goofed,” said Carol Hosler, event coordinator. “We had initially seen the sale as something of a fund raiser for Good Shepherd – in addition to providing a venue for peoples’ flea market sales and affordable Christmas gifts to striking miners.” “But community response to that idea wasn’t great,” she added. “We just didn’t get as many sellers as we’d hoped. So we have changed the event guidelines in hopes of making this a great shopping opportunity.” According to Hosler there now will be no space rental fees and at the end of the day sellers’ contributions to Good Shepherd will be entirely voluntary. Additionally,

whether sellers provide a discount to striking miners is entirely up to them as they negotiate their prices directly with buyers. Sellers may include baked goods if they wish. Additional persons now wishing to be sellers should call Carol Hosler at 480-220-8440. The sale will open on Saturday at 9 a.m., leaving time for sellers to set up their booths. (Set-up begins at 7 a.m.) Items expected include porcelain dolls, various quilted items, wood crafts including carved walking sticks, etched glass objects, Christmas decorations and cars! Yes, to date there are two cars to be sold by their owners. There will also be a quilt raffle. Come Christmas shopping this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Good Shepherd Church in Kearny – the A-frame church at the bottom of school hill.

It was a beautiful day Saturday, a perfect day to meet the officers from the Kearny Police Department and learn about safety. The Kearny Police Department and Town of Kearny hosted the first Safety Awareness Day at

Hubbard Park, offering food, games and fun – and bicycles! Kearny Police Chief Wallace Kenney donned a different hat, a chef’s hat, cooking hot dogs for all who attended.

The Copper Basin Junior Chamber members assisted the officers, running the games and serving food. Other law enforcement agencies were there including: Pinal County Sheriff’s Office with

Town of Kearny, Kearny Police

Presentation of the Nova from the Kearny Fall Festival and Car Show. Jesse Hines from Getsome Motorsports presents Mark Atchley with the keys and title. Mark said he only bought only one ticket.

Kearny Police Chief Wallace Kenney cooked the hot dogs for the event. Officer Anthony Clubb is standing by to offer any assistance.

Copper Basin Junior Chamber members helped with the games and serving food at the Safety Awareness Day held Saturday.

Pinal County Sheriff’s Deputies were on hand to promote the Citizens on Patrol program.

Police Explorer Post from Globe shared information about their program.

The train ride was full most of the time, expertly driven by a Kearny Police Officer.

host Safety Awareness Dayinformation on their Citizens on Patrol program; and the Police Explorer Post from Globe. Samuel Colton Sr. was also there promoting the Cobre Valley Institute of Technology’s vocational programs at Central Arizona College.

There were train rides (very popular), a cake walk (yum!) and the famous Kearny Koyotes 4-H Club Chicken Drop (how did they do that?). Kearny Officer Thomas Rozzi did the announcing and provided music for the event while Officer

Anthony Clubb handed out free hats. Kids in attendance received tickets that were used to raffle off bicycles, provided by the department. What a great way to meet the officers who keep the streets of Kearny safe? A great time was had by all.

Lots of Junior Chamber members help out at the event, serving food, taking tickets, running games and painting faces.

SAFETYContinued from page 4

Thanksgiving dinner? First turn off the heat source (oven or stove top burner). Second if the fire is on the stove top put a pot lid on top of the pot/pan and NEVER open it to check to see if the fire is out. By opening the lid, if the fire isn’t completely out you will be providing fresh oxygen to the fire causing it to re-ignite. The same goes for the oven. Turn off the heat source, keep the oven door closed until the fire is extinguished. Never, never, NEVER pour water on a grease or oil fire! When in doubt … CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT! Now let’s talk about turkey fryers. While fried turkey is a delicious alternative to an oven-baked turkey it can be very dangerous to fry a turkey. Most people overfill the oil they add to the pot of the fryer and when they turkey is added that causes the oil to splash over the edges of the pot. Here are some suggestions from FEMA for the safe use of a turkey fryer:• Turkey fryers can easily tip over spilling hot oil across a large area. Use your turkey fryer only outdoors on a sturdy, level surface that is well away from anything that

can burn. Make sure you have a child and pet free zone of at least 3 feet around your fryer to help prevent against burns.• An overfilled pot can cause oil to spill over when the turkey is placed inside. Determine the correct amount of oil needed by placing the turkey in the pot and filling with water to determine the “fill line”.• A partially frozen turkey will cause hot oil to splatter. Make sure your turkey is completely thawed and dry before you fry it.• Turkey fryers can easily overheat and start a fire. Check the temperature often with a cooking thermometer so the oil won’t overheat.• The pot, lid and handles of a turkey fryer can get dangerously hot and cause burn injuries. Use long cooking gloves and protect hands and arms when you handle these items. Need more Thanksgiving safety tips? Contact AZ Safety Solutions at (520) 838-4508 or via email at [email protected]. Boyce Thompson Arboretum announces the annual Fall Foliage Festival on Thanksgiving weekend Saturday, Nov. 30, and Sunday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Celebrate Thanksgiving with plentiful fall color, striking desert vistas, and two days of music, food, and arts vendors outdoors beneath the colorful canopy of Chinese Pistachio trees. Enjoy pizza or pisole and browse Native American jewelry, nature crafts, and pottery for sale. The Fall Foliage Festival features live music by Scott Schaefer, Saggio, and Superior local Steven Holmquist. With his Indigenous wood flutes and didgeridoo, World Music instrumentalist Scott Schaefer will take you on an enchanting multidimensional musical journey. Joining him on Saturday will be special guest Saggio with the singing steel of the handpan. Schaefer returns on Sunday, following a musical performance by Superior local songwriter, singer and guitarist, Steve Holmquist. Boyce Thompson Arboretum is located east of Superior, in the stunning Superstition Mountains. At 343 acres, it is the largest and oldest botanical garden in the state of Arizona, and features 18,900 desert plants from around the world. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children. Dogs are welcome. Visit www.btarboretum.org for more information.
