    PAPA JoHn

In Memory o Papa John by the Mosaic Center

    Written by Linda Deveau

John, Papa John, as he was introduced to us. We have learn-ed many things through Johns beautiul, crystal blue eyes.

John taught us about lie-lie thats not always pretty butlie that is valuable. He taught us that sometimes the mostbeautiul moments are ound in the roughest places.

We rst met John six years ago when we went to invite him

and his riends Rick, Barb and Je to a dinner at the church. At that time the our riends were living at the CanadaPackers stack on Fort Road, also known as shanty town.

John and Rick greeted us and welcomed us into their humblehome. Tey oered up a chair and lively conversation andthus, began a great riendship.

John taught us about love about a hug and a genuine eyelling smile that would warm the coldest place on a winterevening. He taught us about acceptance and He acceptedus. As green and stupid as we were John accepted us or our

member the time that we gave John and some other riendsa care package lled with necessities. Te heart behind the

care packages was genuine, but our brains werent engagedsince we had purchased and loaded the goodies into somevery bright, uorescent coloured tote bags. We thought theywere so perect and nice. Without saying a negative thing,

John and his riends graciously accepted the neon ashingbags. Only later did it dawn on us that the last thing theywanted was something brightly coloured so that they couldbe easily seen in the parklands. Duh! But John never said a

    mumbling word.

John opened up a world to us that we hadnt known. Heshowed us people, places and circumstances that neededattention. Knowing John inspired us to search or a way tooer a small amount o help and inspired us to begin theMosaic Centre ministry.

Troughout the years that we knew John we would tell him

about our dream to have a centre like Mosaic. He would al-ways encourage us with his words, Yes, you girls are going todo that.

When we nally opened the doors to Mosaic Centre welooked orward to the day that John, our inspiration, wouldcome and visit us. He did, nally, start coming and he at-tended our open house. From then on he would, occasionally, stop by or a coee but mostly or hugs and a riendly chat.

Just 2 weeks beore Johns accident he was able to move intohis own apartment. He was nervous but happy, and, I think, more than a little relieved about being o o the street beorethe winter. Te day beore the accident, John came by the cen-tre and invited us to come to see his new place so he couldmake us a coee. We promised we would come because wewere so excited about his apartment, and we wanted to visit

him to bring him his special Mosaic quilt or his new bed. Imsorry that we werent able to ollow through with that prom-

hospital bedside. We know that he has now moved to his newand eternal home where one day we will be able to visit him.

John taught us about honesty, even when it hurts he wouldsaid, Look ladies, I aint gonna lie to you. I know what Imdoing isnt right, but I aint gonna lie to you. And he didnt. He was always straight up, brutally honest.

John was always a gentleman. He showed respect or thechurch and his ladies when we would meet. Even i he slippedup with a swear word or two, he would always prousely

apologize and tell us how his mom taught him that wasnt theproper way to talk in ront o a lady. He would always removehis hat in the church and be very respectul, reminding othersto do the same. John taught us class.

John showed us generosity to a ault. No matter what Johnhad, i he thought someone else needed it he would give itto them, - even the shirt o his own back or his new bed inhis new apartment John was, not only generous in materialthings, but also generous with his smiles and hugs and en-couragement. We could all learn about giving rom John.

He taught us about God and about holding on to our aith even when things werent going really well.

I was always able to nd Jesus in Johns eyes. John knew theLord and accepted him as his Saviour. John walked with Godbeside him and knew the Lord never let him. John wanted to

attend church services. No matter how oten we would invitehim to come to a Sunday church service, and no matter howmuch he really wanted to be there, he just couldnt allow him-sel. He didnt want to come to worship, in what he describedas unclean, unshaven and wearing dirty clothing.

We would assure John that he was beautiul and his heartwas beautiul and that was what God wanted him to bring

to worship. But, or some reason John didnt eel that he wasgood enough to come to church on Sunday. I promised John,th t th d h tt d d h h S d

at Emmaus, I would stop whatever I was doing and dancewith joy to the Lord.

John may not have attended or worshiped in a church onSundays but he did worship the Lord. I remember beinggathered around the back o my mini van, in a parking lot bythe ofce one evening, and John requesting that everyone singAmazing Grace. Everyone joined in the praise and I lookedup to see John, blue eyes glistening and tears running downhis beautiul cheeks his eyes were lled with love or theLord.

For quite a long time, John would come to Emmaus onMonday evenings while our worship team practiced orSunday services. He didnt eel too shy to come to churchthen, because there wasnt a congregation that might judgehim. Quite oten, he brought his riends and ushered theminto the sanctuary, properly instructing them to take o theirhats and mind their language because they were in Gods

house.Tose evenings were wonderul times o worship. We sharedmany prayers and shed many a tear together. No matter whatresh new worship songs we would sing John would alwayscome back to his avourite and request that we please singAmazing Grace... his tears would roll and we knew that hewas praising the Lord and thanking Him or His amazinggrace that he ound even while he was living a very hard lie.

At the end o most Monday evenings, we would walk outtogether and I would tease him that he owed me a dance, sohe better come on Sunday. I always assured him he could sitright up ront with my husband and me so that he wouldnthave to ocus on anyone but God. John assured me that oneday he would.

John did come to church one Sunday morning, with his good

riend Stacey and brother Marvin in tow. I was so happy tosee John and went to greet him at the entrance, but I didnt

    11/13

had gone home to be with the Lord. Instead John, Stacey andMarvin accompanied me to one o the ront pews in the sanc-

tuary, where together we worshiped and prayed.

You see, even then, in that dark hour, John knew where tond comort. He ound it in the arms o Jesus.

I continued to challenge and tease John about the dance thathe owed me, and yes, he still owes me one today. But I knowthat I will collect that dance, because, sooner or later I amgoing to meet up with John in the presence o the Lord, in

the biggest Kingdom church that we cant even imagine. Andwe will dance.

Papa John- he may not have realized it, but he was a greatteacher, preacher, gentleman, riend and child o God. I knowthat he no longer worries about a place to stay. He has nallygone home and will never be out in the cold again. Tank-youGod or blessing us all with knowing John.

We miss John. His hugs. His smiles. His sense o humour. His honesty. His Love. And his beautiul blue eyes that, inthe midst o everything, reected his heart.

Amazing grace! How sweet the soundThat saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see.

    Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,And grace my fears relieved;

how precious did that grace appearThe hour I first believed.

    Through many dangers, toils, and snares,I have already come;

Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

He will my shield and portion be,As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,And mortal life shall cease,

I shall possess, within the veil,A life of joy and peace.

When weve been there ten thousand years,Bright shining as the sun,

Weve no less days to sing Gods praiseThan when we first begun.
