he Chrysler’s collection of
European painting and sculpture
ranks among the finest and most
distinctive collections of its kind in the
United States. Donated in large part
by Walter P. Chrysler, Jr., the European
collection ranges from jewel-like
Renaissance panel paintings by
Marx Reichlich and Jan Gossaert to
bold early modernist canvases by
Henri Matisse and Georges Braque.
The shape of the collection reflects
the extraordinary breadth of Mr.
Chrysler’s artistic interests, his foresight,
and his particular passion for Italian
and French painting.

In terms of specifics:
• Italian treasures include Venetian
Renaissance paintings such as
Paolo Veronese’s 1562 magisterial
altarpiece The Virgin and Child with
Angels Appearing to Saints Anthony
Abbot and Paul, the Hermit; and
the Baroque masterpiece Baptism
of the Eunuch by Salvator Rosa.
• From France, works range from
French Old Masters such as
Pastorale: The Vegetable Vendor
by Francois Boucher to 19th-
century masterworks such as
Eugene Delacroix’s Arab Horseman
Giving a Signal. The academic
masters who dominated the Paris
Salon are well represented here
(including Jean-Leon Gerome’s
Excursion of the Harem), and the
Impressionists are a particular
strength – Edgar Degas’ Dancer
With Bouquets and Pierre-Auguste
Renoir’s The Daughters of Durand-
Ruel. Post-Impressionist masterworks
include Paul Gauguin’s enigmatic
The Loss of Virginity and Paul
Signac’s joyful The Lagoon of
Saint Mark, Venice.
Other works of note include a
poignant Victorian genre picture,
Home, by Sir Joseph Noel Paton,
and a monumental marble
sculpture by Gianlorenzo Bernini,
Bust of the Savior. Bernini was the
greatest sculptor and architect of
the17th century, the major founder
of Italian High Baroque style, and a
man who dominated the Roman
art world for nearly 50 years. Bernini
died in 1680, and this was his last work.
