PALACE THEATERThe shell of the old Palace Theater belongs to the Main Street

Office. We were commissioned to find a purpose for the building,to show a developer the possibilies available here. Aer a

grossly over-budget first aempt, we decided to present several

schemes- showing the vast amount of opportunity in this build-

ing. We have four total: a gym, an art venue/restaurant, a

farmers market/restaurant, and finally, a general mulpurpose

    building.

HistoryIntroduconThe Palace was originally a general store, and was about half the size that it is today. Between

1898 and 1913 the general store was bought by Najeeb Solomon, an immigrant from Lebanon, and turned into a dry goods store. By 1925, Mr. Solomon had turned half of his dry goods store

into a cinema. Najeebs son Teddy worked at the cinema when he was young and throughout

college. This inspired his love for movies and the theater. He became a theater magnate, owning

around 300 theaters and drive-ins throughout the south. It was Teddy Solomon who expanded

the original theater to its current existance.

Project Goals: The goal for the gym program for the Palace Theater is to create a single use facility that ulizes the volume of the

building. This facility will enliven the downtown by providing a unique exercise facility that can be ulized by all age groups.

Project Descripon: The Palace Theater, located on Main Street Downtown, used to be a place that brought the community

together; however, it fell into disrepair and it hasn't been used since the 70's. Nowadays, its large structure sll remains as a

reminder of McComb's past. The large interior volume is the most noteable characterisc of the building, which allows for a wide

range of uses for the space. The best single-use idea for the space is a health and fitness facility, which will take advantage of the

large interior volume of the building and bring the community together once again. This project includes turning the main space

into a mulpurpose sports area that can be used for basketball, indoor soccer and volleyball. It also includes a staonary equip-

ment area, a free weight area, a running track, and leaseable space. People would come together with a similar goal: to becomeacve and have a healthier lifestyle.

Community Impact: The gym will be a useful tool in drawing more people to live downtown, and will encourage the community to

    live healthier.

    Palace Theater 109 Main Street

    Restaurant/Performance Auditorium/Art Gallery/Retail Space

Project Goals: The goal for the restaurant/art venue program for the Palace Theater is to create a muluse facility composed of a

small performance auditorium, art gallery, office, retail space, and restaurant. The Palace Theater was a social hub in its heyday and

it is the project goal to return it to this former role. This facility will enliven the downtown by providing cultural amenies to the

area and by acvitang both Main Street and Front Street.

Project Descripon: The Palace Theater was converted from a feed store in 1920's by the Solomon Family, and fell into disrepair in

the 1970's. The theater will be redeveloped as a mixed-use facility housing retail space, a performance auditorium, an art gallery,

and a restaurant. The objecves for the project are to provide venues for local arsts and performers and enliven Front Street with

a new restaurant to augment the Caboose restaurant and help solidify McComb's place as a dining desnaon. The building will be

divided with the performance auditorium, art gallery, and retail space on Main Street, and restaurant facing Front Street. These

two uses will be separated by a core that contains the mechanical systems for the enre building as well as the toilets and kitchen

for the restaurant. The current sloped floor will be altered so that both floors are level; however, the performance auditorium/art

gallery will be on the Main Street level, and the restaurant will be six feet lower facing Front Street. The original Palace Theater

entry and original windows on the second and third floors of the facade will be restored.

Site Improvements: The project considers an oponal entry via Railroad Blvd. thereby ulizing the "Ruins" as a dining space.

Community Impact: By restoring the original marquee, the Palace Theater will resume i ts posion as a landmark in the community.

The restaurant/art venue program will enrich the arsc and cultural life of McComb and acvate the downtown.

    Farmers Market/Restaurant

Project Goals: The goal for the Farmer's Market / Restaurant program for the Palace Theater is to create a muluse facility com-

posed of the market, restaurant, and a small lease area. The Palace Theater was a social hub in its heyday and it is the project goal

to return it to this former role. This facility will enliven the downtown by providing cultural amenies to the area and by acvitang

both Main Street and Front Street.

Project Descripon: The Palace Theater was converted from a feed store in 1920's by the Solomon Family, and fell into disrepair in

the 1970's. The theater will be redeveloped into a farmer's market on the first floor and a restaurant extending to both the first

and second floors. The market will be spli t up into two areas: temporary and permanent. The temporary area will be o n the south

side of the building and will be open-air. The permanent side, separated from the temporary market by a mechanical/storage core,

will be condioned. One of the storefronts on Main Street will be converted into a kitchen where food is transported by dumb-

waiter to the 2nd floor where patrons are seated. The restaurant will be associated with the market and will incorporate fresh

foods into the menu. The original Palace Theater entry and original windows on the second and third floors of the facade will be

restored, bringing the facades on both the Front St. and Main St. back to their origi nal grandeur.

Community Impact: By restoring the original marquee, the Palace Theater will return a l andmark to the community. The

market/restaurant will enrich the cultural and ecomomic life of McComb and acvate the downtown.
