TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS: The liturgy of Palm Sunday

begins with St. Matthew’s account of Jesus’ procession into

Jerusalem: A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, (a

homemade “red carpet” for a king), while others cut branches from

the trees (palms), strewed them on the road & cried out: “Hosanna

& blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. The folks

rejoiced in anticipation of the Messiah’s leading the overthrow of

the hated Roman occupation of their land. Jesus had a different

plan. Today we carry palms in procession. They remind us of our

own fickleness, how easily we can forget who we are & to whom

we belong. AND they remind us that the Risen Christ is indeed the

king, the master of our lives. The “red carpet” we prepare for him is

our humility, our faith, our desire to serve him faithfully, our pride in

being his disciples, our determination to live in his company.
