A tribute to talent 20th Annual Photo Contest gallery of finalistsFor 20 years, the Palo Alto Weekly has invited photog-raphers to submit their best efforts in our annual photo contest. In this special section, we’re presenting a col-lection of the finalists in the 2011 Palo Alto Weekly Photo Contest, which is co-sponsored by the City of Palo Alto, Division of Arts and Sciences.

More than 200 photographers submitted their work in three categories: Bay Area Images, Portraits and Views Beyond the Bay Area. Adults and youth were judged separately.

Changes to this year’s contest included submitting only digital photographs and eliminating the manipulated-im-

age category, noted Amy Renalds, contest coordinator. The largest category for adults was Views Beyond the Bay Area, reflecting their penchant for travel outside the Bay Area, she said. More youth favored portraits.

“The judges were not surprised because youth are so interested in taking pictures of each other,” she said.

The judges this year included award-winning Palo Alto Weekly staff photographer Veronica Weber; David Hib-bard, author of “Natural Gestures,” a book of images from beaches and forests; Angela Buenning Filo, a landscape photographer whose works are included in the San Fran-cisco Museum of Modern Art collection; and Brigitte Car-

nochan, whose photographs have been exhibited nation-ally and internationally in galleries and museums.

Winners of the photo contest will be announced in the June 3, 2011, issue of the Weekly, along with their bios and judges’ comments. An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held June 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Palo Alto City Hall lobby, 250 Hamilton Ave.

All of the winning photos, as well as some selected by the judges, will be included in an exhibit in the lobby from June 8 through June 28. n
