    PREFACE

Science is not the enemy of rel igion. The authorrs research hasdemonstrated that retarded exhalation encourages relaxation. Thom-as Jefferson appeared to have the key when he advised, 'When angrycoun t t o t en . ' Today , we migh t add , " I f tha t doesn ' t do i t , countto twenty on the same breath. ' I t appears extended exhalat ion af f -ects the parasl4npathet ic nervous system. This is the part of theautonomic nervous system that relaxes the body (The sympathet icnervous system of the autonomic nervous system, the "Fight or f l ight"mechanism, exci tes the body ) .The point to be made is that prayer and prayer devices encouragesparasympathet ic ascendance. This forms an entree to our psychicor inner selves. For years rel igions and myst ical teachings haveencouraged parasympathet ic ascendance through repet i t ive Prayers, beads , vowel sounds , mant ras , i ncense , sof t l i gh t s , re lax ing mus ic ,congenial environment, urandalas, bel ls, candles' etcetera. To help in this whole process of attunement with the God of ourHearts ' the author presents the fol lowing most ly non-sectar ian pray-ers. He's found them helpful , in our quest for aid and succor to ourGod within. If you know some you would share, please submit them tothe author for an expanded edit ion of 'Prayers for Myst ics. " Thanks.

MUTIMA A PieCE of GodOne of the best stor ies I know about a psychic heart is an old Afr i -can tale from Uganda. I t seems the highest god, Kabezya-Mpungu, hadfour chi ldren- the sun, the moon, the darkness, and the rain. Therewas no earth or sky, nor were there any aniuals or hunan beings. Then one day Kabezya-Mpungu created the earth and the sky. He createdthe many ani.mals, and he created rnan and soman. Man was much like theanimals, except that he was endowed with reason.Kabezya-[pungu cal led his four chi ldren together to tel l then that hewas about to leave then, and he cautioned them to be temperate whilehe was gone. He htanted no harm to l lan and the animals. But whi le hewas gone, he would send dorrn to earth, in his placer Mut ima or healt -a piece of hiursel f to look after his creat ions.Kabezya-Mpungu then left. AalI that remained of him on earth rras Mutimaor heart , a piece of God no bigger than a hand.
