Q: What two things can you never eat for breakfast?A: Lunch and Dinner.

Or, breakfast, if you get your food from the neighborhood food shelfand it is running low on donations. We have an opportunity to makesure that the half a million Minnesotans who “shop” at food shelveswill indeed have breakfast every day, as well as lunch and dinner.

For over 35 years, Mount Zion has raised money and food for Neighborhood HouseFood Shelf. The project was initiated by our Sisterhood, and over the years we have allparticipated, especially during High Holy Days and in Minnesota Foodshare’s MarchCampaign against hunger. This year, Brotherhood is joining our Religious School in a"Give 5 for the March Food Drive!" campaign. Brotherhood is offering a match of upto $1000 for either funds or food donated by religious school students.

We can all participate in “Give 5” – Every time you come to the synagogue, bring a con-tribution in a multiple of 5. It could be 5 dollars, or 5 cans or boxes, 5 pounds, or anycombination thereof. Be creative! (and be generous).

When you come to services, you will see a different sort of Bima decoration than usual.I’ll keep it a surprise, but here is a hint:

Q: What do bakers give women on special occasions?A: Flours

Give 5 for the March Food Drive!Every March, Minnesota congregations, including MountZion, support the “March Against Hunger” Food Drive. This year, we are asking all congregants to give in multi-ples of 5. It could be 5 lbs or $5. Our food and financialdonations support the Neighborhood House Food Shelf. With appreciation to Mount Zion’s Women of Reform Ju-daism/Sisterhood for running Mount Zion’s drive and toBrotherhood for providing a matching grant of $1000 forthe Religious School.

Neighborhood House operates two food shelves. The Wellstone Center Food Shelf distrib-utes over 2,500 pounds of food daily to over 10,000 households annually. Francis BasketFood Shelf is the only food shelf in Highland Park serving 1,500 individuals each year. Both locations connect participants to critical community resources that help them move“from survive to thrive.“

5lbs = 3 meals$5 = 6 meals

$50 =56 mealsEvery dollar counts because Neighborhood House uses bulk purchasing power tostretch cash donations up to 4 times further! And cash never expires so fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy can be purchased all year long.

How you can help:Submit your donation in the envelope provided in this Bulletin.1.Give online: mzion.nirsham.com/form/donate.2.Drop off food donations at the Mount Zion Mitzvah Food Shelf Project table.3.Food donations most needed include cooking oil, flour, beans, rice and sugar.

MAKE SHABBAT YOUR SANCTUARY

Iton Tziyon CoverBy Michael Wall

The Hamantaschen Project is a yearlySisterhood-sponsored effort to bakeand sell the iconic Purim cookie. Wewelcome people on an almost-weeklybasis to make fillings and dough and tohelp roll, fill, and bake. (No experi-ence? No problem!) The sales benefitsTemple programs, provides a service tothose who don't want to bake theirown, and creates a fun environment tomeet others and do some good whilehaving some fun. I love to spend timein the kitchen. From the notion that

there SHOULD be an apple pie filling for next year to the quest for theperfect shade of golden brown, it is fun to create for others. Mostly, Ithink it is an example that we all have passions, and we all have thechance to use those passions to support Mount Zion.

Michael, his wife Jennfier, and children Maximillian (11) and Sadie (11)have been members of Mount Zion for three years.

Kehillah (Community) Council MeetingTuesday, March 11, 7:00-9:00 p.m. All are welcome. At this meeting, we will launch our next kivvun (direction) for Mount Zion.

The first kivvun was on Israel in 2010-11. We spent 6 monthsplanning and 12 months engaged on this topic which we defined as“Wrestling with our Relationship with Israel.”

The second kivvun was on justice/tzedek in 2012-13. Afterthe planning, we spent 12 months focused on telling our stories, learning the Jewish values of justice, and beginning developing ourrelationships in the community with Camphor Methodist Church. This is on-going.

In between each kivvun, is a period of rededication to our relation-ships, panim el panim, face to face.

Our next kivvun will be on Torah. How will Mount Zion ful-fill our vision of being “devoted to life-long learning?” We need yourinput to develop goals and action plans to infuse Torah learningthroughout our congregational life. (Our last kivvun in 2016-17will be on Shabbat, thus completing a seven year cycle).

It might seem funny to think of Purim as a time ofhiddenness when it is when we unabashedly reveal ourraucous, celebratory selves making all silly things pos-sible in the holiest place in our synagogue, the sanc-tuary. Hiddenness, though, is a lite motif of thisfestive holiday. Esther’s name derives from the He-brew root ryx / “str,” meaning hidden. God’s hand

is unseen in the story of the Jews’ salvation (God is not mentioned oncein Megillat Esther), and the entire Jewish community is saved from de-struction by a nes nistar, a hidden miracle. In Deuteronomy 31: 18,God says to Israel, “I will surely hide (hastir astir) My face from you…”The sages see this Hebrew phrase as a subtle suggestion of the God’sconcealment during the time of Esther.

The entire Purim story is wrapped in disguise, hidden behind a cos-tume, concealed behind a mask. Like Purim, our world seems hiddenduring the long months of winter, wrapped in a disguise of ice, con-cealed underneath the blanket of snow. Purim will arrive as we start tonotice signs of spring (we hope!). Slowly the disguise will melt away, themask will disappear to reveal all that is underneath waiting to springforth.

As I write, our lakes and earth are still frozen. While we wait to emergefrom the deep freeze, let’s come out to celebrate “A Frozen Purim,” withmyriad opportunities for participation. If you’ve hidden out this win-ter, now’s the time to break forth and to reveal yourself to your syna-gogue community even as you don the customary masks and costumes. Please see page 7 for details.

Rabbi Levy had to spend time in a Catholic hospital. He

became friends with the Sister who was a nurse there.

One day, she came into his room and noticed that the

crucifix on the wall was missing. She asked him good-na-

turedly, "Rabbi, what have you done with the crucifix?"

"Oh, sister," chuckled Rabbi Levy, "I just figured

one suffering Jew in this room was enough."

You may have wondered what is happening with ourstrategic plan. I had no idea how time consuming and allencompassing Strategic planning is. However, I amlearning. Over the months of listening and analyzinginput, it is clear that while our congregants are initially at-tracted to Mount Zion for many reasons, it is the rela-

tionships people form once they are here that make temple involvementmeaningful and enduring. Therefore, our Board has identified “Strength-ening Connections” as the overarching theme for our five year plan.

As part of our plan, we have identified four goals. I’ll tell you a bit abouteach goal. Each goal has objectives or “deliverables” and we have actionteams working on ideas and suggestions for the Board to consider. You’llsee much of this material again in a formal statement of our plan, due outlater this spring. Remember, the idea of the plan is to give us a roadmapto get where we want to go and some ideas about how to distribute ourresources. What follows is not yet the plan, but our goals for the plan.

1. Relationships: Creating New Opportunities for Connections

We will find ways to strengthen personal connections between andamong congregants and with the clergy and staff, with an emphasison connecting people across ages and cycles of life.

Congregants value their connection to their constituencies (established cohortssuch as Noazim (20s, 30s), Sisterhood, Brotherhood, Prime Timers, SPORTY,B’nei Mitzvah families, Choir) and often form friendships within those groups.Over time, congregants may have difficulty sustaining friendships and main-taining their connection to Temple life. In addition, many congregants ex-pressed a yearning for sustained connections across the familiar boundaries ofage, gender, and stage of life. Our opportunity is to consider how to create sus-tainable relationships among congregants and with our clergy and staff.

Action team leader: Jean King Appelbaum. Members: Howard Epstein, Gail Gendler, Aimee Gonzales, DavidKnapp, Jeff Schiff, Jon Strauss, and Cantor Strauss-Klein.

2. Participation: Inviting Participation and Support for Each Other

We will facilitate ways members can volunteer in personally fulfillingways and foster the initiative of members to give and receive help.

We want each member of Mount Zion to feel, “I am valued here”. Core tobeing valued is to be asked to help in meaningful ways (based on skills and in-terest) and to receive and give the help that feels right, acting as a communityto celebrate joys and comforting sorrows.

Action Team Leader: Robert Garfinkle. Members: Steve Cohen, Phoebe Ellis, Rozanne Glass, Steve Levin, JudiLevin Marshall, and Rabbi Adler.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

3. Digital communications: Enhancing Effective Communication

We will adopt and continuously evolve digital communications tech-nology so congregants can use the tools they find valuable in theirpersonal and work lives to fully engage with Temple life.

We are in the midst of rapid, continuous adoption of digital communicationtools that change the way people and organizations interact. Mount Zion hasbasic digital communication capabilities but can improve them by taking ad-vantage of the many ways our congregants and potential members use tech-nology to interact with each other and the Temple.

Action Team Co-Leaders: Eric Rice and Dan Zelle. Members: Joan Kinsley, Joe Konstan, Seth Levin, Noah Robiner, JenniferSchneider, Ana Apter, and Larry Solomon.

4. Giving: Inspiring Financial Support

We will grow non-dues revenue to provide a reliable funding sourcefor our sacred work.

Research shows that dues and user fees alone are not sufficient to fund a vibrantcongregation. A culture of voluntary giving rests on the foundation of a strongpersonal connection to the Temple and being in relationship with the clergy orlay leaders asking for support. Eliciting predictable income from individuals(annual and special donations or legacy gifts) will establish a healthy comple-ment to our annual commitment and fee-based programs.

Action Team Leader: David Kristal Members: Jeri Glick Anderson, Mark Cohen, Stephanie Chauss, ToddMarshall, Mary Ann Wark, and Rabbi Spilker.

Many thanks to all who are working so hard on our plan and goals—allof the Action team members listed above and the Steering Team—DanRybeck, Karen Suzukamo, Judy Sharken Simon, Larry Solomon, andRabbi Spilker. The Action teams will present their ideas to the Board thisspring. The Board will then have the summer to evaluate and prioritizeideas. If you have questions, comments or input around the Strategic Plan, please reach out to either of the co-chairs, Karen Suzukamo([email protected]) or Dan Rybeck ([email protected]).Watch this space for more updates!

DONATE! DONATE! DONATE!Your kidney! Your corneas! Your blood!

Each day we get emails, letters, tweets and postings asking us to givemoney to some cause or another. Today I am asking you to consider somenon-monetary donations. Give someone the chance of an improved orprolonged life by donating part of your body! In Judaism, Pikuach Nefesh (Saving a life) describes the principle in Jewish law that the preservation of human life overrides virtually any other religious consid-eration. There are many ways to donate, here are just a few:

Live Kidney DonationA kidney transplant is the treatment of choice for patients with end-stagekidney disease. Compared to being on dialysis, a transplant provides in-creased longevity and a markedly better quality of life. In some situa-tions, the improvement in survival with transplantation vs. dialysis isdramatic, especially in patients with diabetes. For more information:www.uofmmedicalcenter.org/Specialties/KidneyTransplant/Livingkid-neydonorprogram/index.htm

Organ, Tissue and Eye Donation When you obtain or renew your license, make sure you check off thebox to be a donor. You can be an organ, eye and tissue donor at any age.If you are under 18, you need parental permission. To learn more andsign up: www.dmv.org/mn-minnesota/organ-donor.php

Blood and Bone Marrow DonationEvery day people with blood cancers and other conditions are kept alivewith donated blood and blood marrow. Step right up here at MountZion on Wednesday April 23rd and give blood. Can’t make it then? Checkhere to see when and where else you can give: www.redcrossblood.org/loca-

tions/st-paul-area-blood-donation-center

Bone Marrow Donation gives a chance for survival for many blood can-cer patients. See how easy it is to get on the registry at:bethematch.org/Support-the-Cause/Donate-bone-marrow/Join-the-mar-row-registry/

Solomon is out in the woods when he comes across a bear. Frightened

for his life, Solomon runs as fast as he can to escape the bear and man-

ages to hide in a cave. But he is horrified to find that the bear has run

after him into the cave and now Solomon is trapped. He closes his eyes

and begins to recite "Sh'ma Yisrael" in anticipation of his final moments.

When he is finished, he opens his eyes and is surprised to see the bear

in front of him with his eyes closed--also praying in Hebrew. Solomon

thinks to himself "How lucky am I to be cornered by what must be the

only Jewish bear in the area! We're mishpocheh--I'm saved!"

And then he listens more carefully to the bear's prayer:

"...HAMOTZI LECHEM MIN HA'ARETZ."

Why is this night different from all other nights? What makes it special, one could argue, is not the matzah or the Hag-gadah, but the fact that the family spends the evening at the table to-gether, eating and talking. No one calls to say "I'll be late, start withoutme." Nobody leaves early for a meeting, a game, a favorite TV show. And the result is, what we do on all other nights of the year is forgettable, but the Seder leaves us with warm and precious memories.

“I will devour them like a lion” says God: The Many Faces of God in the Hebrew Bible

Hanne Løland Levinson, University of MinnesotaWednesday, March 5, 7:30 p.m. at Mount Zion Temple

The Hebrew Bible and the Jewish tradition strongly arguethat God should not be depicted in any form. At the sametime, the Hebrew Bible is full of images for God. God isfather, mother, and leopard, among others. The HebrewBible also draws on many diverse and challengingmetaphors for God. Hanne Løland Levinson explores the

diverse “god-language” of the Hebrew Bible and reflects on the connectionbetween language for God and concepts of God.

Hanne Løland Levinson is assistant professor of Classical and Near Eastern stud-ies at the University of Minnesota, where she is also affiliated with the Centerfor Jewish Studies. She is the author of Silent or Salient Gender? The Inter-pretation of Gendered God-Language in the Hebrew Bible, Exemplified in Isa-iah 42, 46, and 49. The book was awarded the John Templeton Award forTheological Promise in 2008. Co-sponsors: Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies; Mount Zion Temple

Where Was Everyone? A Survivor RemembersPulpit Guest: Fred AmramFriday, April 25, 7:30 p.m. During Shabbat Services before Yom HaShoah

The Holocaust is remembered for its atrocities – the millions murderedby the Nazis. But how did it begin? Were there warning signs? Wherewere our friends? Why do we continue to allow new genocides? FredAmram relates some of his experiences in Nazi Germany and exploressome lessons learned.

For the last four years at Mount Zion on a Shabbat before YomHaShoah, we have invited members of the second generation to speakand share their parent’s stories and their own. We did so to help thechildren of survivors find their own voice, their own story. This year wereturn to listening to a person who was himself an eye witness and sur-vivor. May we continue to find opportunities to truly hear the storiesof all in our congregation.

Fred M.B. Amram, long-time member of Mount Zion married to SandraBrick, is the Morse Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Creativityand Communication at the University of Minnesota.

Lija GreenseidLija Greenseid was nominated for Volunteer of theQuarter by Dana Prottas, Ana Apter, and SarahElkin. She was honored at Shabbat Services on Fri-day, February 21.

Lija Greenseid has been instrumental in creatinga school-wide evaluation for our ReligiousSchool program. Using skills from her profes-sional life as a Senior Evaluator with ProfessionalData Analysts, Inc., Lija developed an internal

evaluation plan here at Mount Zion for the school. Lija is the wife to An-drew and a mother of two students in our Religious School program.

Lija’s process here at Mount Zion was intense and she spent many hoursworking on the survey. First she gathered together a small group of par-ents and staff to develop the questions. This group met weekly for sev-eral months. Lija then wrote several drafts of questions. We launchedthe survey in the spring, and were impressed with the results. Overall, the feedback we received regarding the Lower School, Hebrew School, and Chai School was positive with 78% of parents/guardians being"very" or "mostly" satisfied with the Religious School overall. Parentsgenerally feel the program is meeting their needs by providing a qualityJewish education for their children. Through the survey, we were alsoable to identify three specific areas of improvement.

Lija will openly and happily share that she is a “data geek”. She enjoysthinking about the data – facts, numbers, correlations, curves, trends, statistics – in her spare time. Mount Zion has been fortunate to be ableto benefit from her favorite professional and pastime activity.

We have been so fortunate to have Lija working behind the scenes on thesurvey for our school. She is already gearing up for the new survey, whichwill launch again this spring. We think the words of one appreciativeparent sums up this entire process: “Thank you. I really appreciate theconscientious effort of all involved.” We all look forward to many moreyears of collaboration, evaluation, inspiration, and education.

The dentist told Melvyn that he needed a tooth removed

thetic?" Melvyn shook his head and said, "Let's not pinch

pennies, doctor. Get the best–use imported."

SOCIAL ACTION UPDATE

Minnesota JRLC (Joint Religious Legislative Coalition)

Day on the HillThursday, March 13 in Downtown St. Paul

Keynote Speaker:

Rabbi David Saperstein Director of the Reform Movement's Religious Action Center in DC

More details at www.jrlc.org/day-on-the-hill. Sign up at www.jrlc.org/register-for-day-on-the-hill.

JRLC's Day on the Hill is an annualpolicy briefing and lobby day. Partic-ipants are briefed on the JRLC issuesthat are being debated and voted onat our State Capitol. Clergy and laypeople from across the state attendDay on the Hill to show our interfaithcommitment to social justice and toparticipate in the lawmaking process.Registration is required. Participantsgather in the morning at RiverCentre

in downtown St. Paul for inspiration and issue briefings. Buses thentransport us to the Capitol for a short rally. Meetings are held withlegislators in the afternoon. Buses shuttle between RiverCentre andthe Capitol until 4 p.m.

Rabbi Saperstein was called the most influential rabbi in America byNewsweek Magazine in 2009. His three-decades of leadership of theRAC have built the Reform Movement's voice into one of the most re-spected in contemporary social and civic policy in Washington, DC.

Mount Zion Temple Tzedek CommitteeSocial justice continues in many facets at Mount Zion Temple. Con-gregants are always welcome to bring your voices, ideas and efforts tocommittee work or just get updates by reaching committee chair,Michael Kuhne at [email protected].

Three topics:#1 The Tzedek Committee has sent six members to the Jewish Com-munity Action’s (JCA) multi-week training institute called Tzedek In-stitute: Aimee Gonzalez, Jessica Griffith, Ronna Hammer, MariaKirsch, Donna Koren, and Liz Stein. All are participating in an eight-week, training totally over 30 hours to learn strategies for building so-cial justice work in their respective organizations. Mount Zion Templeis fortunate to have so many committed members volunteering theirtime to educate themselves and the rest of the congregation on bestpractices for social justice work.

Topics #2 and #3 are two projects that differ in scope and duration.

Topic #2 Short-term – Tom Marver is leading the Tzedek Committee’sefforts to ensure passage in 2014 of a Safe Schools initiative that fo-cuses on reducing bullying in the schools. One part of this effort willbe a JCA-sponsored lobby day at Capitol Hill for Mount Zion mem-bers. This is an opportunity for congregants who want to go a little far-ther in developing their advocacy skills in a communal setting bytalking with legislators at the State Capitol (we will announce datesand times soon, both here in the bulletin and on Mount Zion’s Face-book page). We know that many of you were excited and grateful toparticipate in this activity to pass the Same-Sex Marriage law last spring.

Topic #3 Long-term - Tzedek Committee members and Rabbi Spilkerhave been setting the foundation for what we hope is a long-term, con-gregation wide and deep partnership with Camphor MethodistChurch, an historically African-American Church in the Rondo neigh-borhood. It is led by the Reverend Gloria Thomas. Tzedek Committeemember Kate Cavett wrote an oral history of the neighborhood andher relationships with many people helped to open lines of communi-cation. Melissa Rudnick, Jewish Community Action’s liaison to MountZion Temple, is also helping to educate and facilitate this new part-nership.

Our primary goal for this partnership is to build relationships of com-mon interest across the boundaries of our congregational communitiesso that together we can bring social change in ways neither could alone. This new relationship with a portion of St. Paul’s African AmericanCommunity is a continuation of Mount Zion Temple’s tradition of en-gaging in social justice work, generally, but specifically in the PromiseNeighborhood where the church is location. More details of this de-veloping partnership will be presented at the Kehillah Council meet-ing on March 11, a Mount Zion Temple Board meeting to which allcongregants are invited, that will chart some key programming work forthe next year.

Respectfully, Batya Spector
