Our holiday lights reflect the timeless values of Torah and dedication to the history and destiny of the Jewish people as we recall how the ancient Temple in Jerusalem was reclaimed. Like that long ago Temple, a synagogue community represents our shared Jewish values. What we care most about is each other, the character and quality of our lives, and our Jewish engagement with God, Torah, Israel, and our society. As synagogue members and friends, we call upon Chizuk Amuno for emotional and spiritual support. We ask for guidance and assistance. We want help making sense out of the challenges we all face and the Jewish identity we cherish. Hanukkah reminds us, that’s really why we exist as a congregation. Sharing a memory, Hanukkah also unites us as a community of Jews. We create that community when we join together in appreciation of our common bond. At Chizuk Amuno, we are a large and diverse assembly of families and individuals, schools and programs. Yet, our strength and vibrancy come from our collective involvements and shared values. When we meet one another in moments of socializing, celebrating, exploring, and caring, we discover that we are each precious parts of a larger, dynamic whole congregation. Our synagogue committees and staff are striving to strengthen these bonds among us with more opportunities to engage with each other, to break down our group boundaries and do things together. We invite and welcome you to join in this effort. On Hanukkah, as we celebrate a spirit of unity and happiness, we rejoice in the wholeness and holiness of our Chizuk Amuno community. Happy Hanukkah! Dear Friends,

On Hanukkah we celebrate the unity of our people’s spirit. Our holiday lights refl ect the

timeless values of Torah and dedication to the history and destiny of the Jewish people as we recall how the ancient Temple in Jerusalem was reclaimed.

When we meet one another in moments of socializing, celebrating,

exploring, and caring, we discover that we are each precious parts of a larger, dynamic whole congregation.

Our synagogue committees and staff are striving to strengthen these bonds among us with more opportunities to engage with each other, to break down our group boundaries and do things together. We invite and welcome you to join in this eff ort.

On Hanukkah, as we celebrate a spirit of unity and happiness, we rejoice in the wholeness and holiness of our Chizuk Amuno community.

Happy Hanukkah!

Milestones in Our Community

Administrative UpdateLooking to the future, the Chizuk Amuno Congregation Board of Trustees is working to restructure our synagogue administration to enhance our operational capacity. The Board has engaged an executive search firm, DRG, to assist us in redefining the executive director position and in hiring a new executive director. In addition, a search committee has been appointed, chaired by Sam Moskowitz, our First Vice President.

For the past 18 years Ron Millen has served with dedication as executive director of our congregation. His tenure will conclude on June 30, 2013. We know you will want to join us in thanking Ron for his devotion to our synagogue community. Plans to express our gratitude to Ron will be forthcoming.

Is There A Jewish Purpose Today?Tuesday, January 8, 7:30 p.m.Dr. Arnold Eisen, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America joins in conversation with Rabbi Ron Shulman. Chancellor Eisen’s scholarship and leadership in Conservative Judaism has inspired thoughtful engagement about the meaning of Jewish life today, and the place for Conservative Judaism within the Jewish community.

As follow-up to this conversation, Rabbi Shulman will discuss three themes from a new resource published by the Conservative Movement, The Observant Life: The Wisdom of Conservative Judaism for Contemporary Jews. On three Tuesday evenings in January, Rabbi Shulman will teach from this text so that we may explore how Jewish ethics and practice enrich and inspire our lives and help us to define a Jewish purpose.

These dramatic cases show the resilience of children and the creative interventions that help them cope and thrive. Dr. Silberg will explain dissociation in children, a psychological process that allows children to protect themselves by living in the world of imagination. Books will be available for sale.

Hanukkah at Chizuk AmunoThis year, our theme commemorates the 25th anniversary of the redemption of Soviet Jewry. On December 6, 1987 many of us marched on the capitol in Washington, DC to demand the release of Jews from the Soviet union. It remains one of the great successes of the American and world Jewish communities that hundreds of thousands of refuseniks were literally set free from communist Russia and then became part of the larger world Jewish community in Israel, Baltimore, and across the globe.

In synagogue on Shabbat, December 8 and December 15, we will have special programming to celebrate the milestone and to tell the story of Soviet Jewry. Both our clergy and members of our synagogue and school communities will speak and teach. Each night of Hanukkah we will dedicate our candle lighting to another important figure in the struggle to free Soviet Jewry.

If you have memories of the march, the protests, the struggle, or the redemption of Soviet Jewry we want to hear them. Please share your stories with us by e-mailing Rabbi Wechsler, [email protected].
