Attention Parents of rising Kindergartners!
Bristow Run Kindergarten Registration for school year 2019-2020 is coming soon.
Thursday, April 4, 9:30am – 12:30pm and 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Thursday, April 11, 4:30pm - 7:30pm
What you need to bring:
Original Birth Certificate: (Child must be 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2019)
Three forms of proof of residency-One form MUST be your lease or deed/settlement
statement. Plus we need two additional forms (i.e. driver’s license, car registration,
voter registration, utility bill, etc..)
Physical examination and immunization record - Please note: You may still register
your student if you do not have their physical or immunization record on the above
registration dates. We will however, need to have the physical and immunization
record prior to the first day of school. It is important to register your child on one of
these registration dates so we have an idea of how many new kindergarteners we will
have and how big our classes will be.
Registration packets are available in the front office.
If you are unable to attend these registration dates, please call the office and ask to speak to
Susie Pierce at 703-753-7741 or email her at [email protected].
All rising Kindergarteners will be invited to participate in a screening this summer.
Dates of the screening will be provided at the April Registrations.
In conjunction with Boosterthon, we will celebrate
Parents! This year’s main fundraiser is the Panther Fun Run! It’s a two-week pro-gram that kicks off with a Pep Rally on March 26th. Families will then gather pledg-es for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps), and we’ll celebrate at the Fun Run on April 5th. With our big goal of raising $25,000 for technology and a playground re-fresh we asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run and make it easier, more profitable, and more fun.
Students will also experience an amazing character theme, MINDSPARK MYSTERY LAB! Boosterthon’s most exciting theme yet combines S.T.E.A.M skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) with character-building. While they're teaming up with the MindSpark Kids to solve mysteries, our students will learn five 21st-century character traits that will help strengthen themselves and our world.
Donations will go toward technology and a playground refresh and to the entire two-week experience. So please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on your student at the Fun Run! Thank you for your support!
This year, parents will have the option to personalize an addi-
tional 4 pages at NO additional cost! Yay! The deadline to order is: APRIL 30.
Extra copies will not be ordered or sold at the school. Yearbooks must be ordered online, so
don't miss out and order yours today!!

The 2nd Grade Play “The Hat in Me”: Save the date: May 29 at 7pm. I will begin teaching 2nd
grade students this play in April. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn presenta-
tion skills, teamwork and public speaking all while learning about careers. Students are expected
to be at the school by 6:45pm on May 29 for this evening performance. All rehearsals will be done
during the school day. Students will need a costume (preferably with a hat but not required) to
showcase a career. Handmade hats or costumes are fine as well. More details to come when I
start teaching this, but if you are the parent of a 2nd grader and have questions, please contact me
Summer Art Enrichment is the Summer Art

Gainesville Middle School Rising 6th Grade Parent/Student night is scheduled for March 20th at 6:30pm at Gainesville Middle School. School counseling representatives from Marstellar and Gainesville also visit us during the school day to discuss Middle School with students.
We recently worked with selected students in grades 1,2,3 and 5 on a skit for the Code of Behavior
Assembly about our new Buddy Benches! The Buddy Benches were funded by an SCA Fundraiser
and will be installed on our playground soon. The Buddy Bench helps to foster kindness and inclu-
sion on the playground. If students need a buddy, they sit on the bench and another student sits
with them and asks them to play or what they want to play. They then have a new buddy to play
with. We look forward to using these on the playground soon!
GUIDANCE CLASSES
We are currently working with grades 3,4,5 in the library through March 12. Students in grades 4,5
will be taking the VDOE School Climate Survey in the computer lab. We will also be focusing on
careers. We will teach grades K,1,2 March 13 until Spring Break and focus on careers. There is a
great website that parents can visit with their children that has lots of information about careers:

This is a reminder that the State of
Virginia requires students entering
sixth grade in Prince William County
Public Schools to present proof that
they have had one booster shot of
the Tdap vaccine. This is the vaccine
for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertus-
sis (Tdap). If a Tdap has been admin-
istered after age 7, the requirement
is met. By state law, without proof
of this immunization or an exemp-
tion on file, children will not be able
to enroll in school for the 2019-20
school year.
If your child receives this vaccine
prior to the last day of 5 th grade,
please submit the paperwork to Mrs
Antonucci in the clinic. This infor-
mation will be entered into our com-
puter data base and becomes a per-
manent part of your child’s record.
If the vaccine is received during the
summer, the paperwork should be
submitted to the Middle School your
child will be attending.
In acknowledgement of Nutrition Month, all classrooms are being asked to create a large poster or
banner that represents the students’ collective ideas as to what makes a “Healthy Classroom.”
Nutritional information, healthy messages/tips and reminders about how to eat healthy and be active
will be used to create their display. Two grade levels will work together to judge each other’s posters
and choose the one that best represents the established guidelines. Judging will take place on
March 22nd and the winner from each grade level will be awarded the
“Golden Apple” trophy.
Winning posters/banners will be placed on display in the lobby.
Good nutrition is key to good health. Try a rainbow of fruits and
vegetables for better health:
Choosing in season fruits and vegetables with a variety of colors like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple will give you a variety of healthy nutrients. See the suggestions below:
Vary Your Veggies: Go dark green and orange such as spinach, broccoli, brussel sprouts, lettuce, carrots, sweet potatoes, and squash.
Fruit Focus: Fruits are great for mealtimes and snacks. Include fresh, frozen, canned or dried.
Red: strawberries, apples, cherries, grapes
Orange/yellow: oranges, clementines, peaches, pineapples, bananas
Green: apples, grapes, kiwi
Blue/purple: blueberries, plums, raisins, blackberries, purple grapes. Go easy on fruit juice.
Besides choosing fruits and vegetables, remember these healthy tips:
Grains: Make half your grains whole. Choose grains like whole wheat bread, brown rice, oatmeal, low fat popcorn.
Protein: Go Lean: Eat lean meat, chicken, turkey and fish. Try more dried beans and peas.
Calcium is important for strong bones: Serve low fat and fat free milk.
Oils: Get it from fish, nuts, and olive oil. Try coconut oil, it adds a great flavor and is super healthy. Sugar: Choose foods that don’t have sugar as one of first ingredients. Added sugar contributes calories with few nutrients. Other great choices include local honey and maple sugar.
Fats: Know your fats: Solid fats are higher in saturated and/or Trans fats. Try to limit these.

for February
Our Art Masterpiece of the Month is
“FRENCH PASTRIES” by Wayne
Theibaud. It was painted in 1963.
Wayne Thiebaud (TEE-boh; born Nov 15,
1920) is an American painter widely
known for his colorful works depicting
commonplace objects—pies, lipsticks,
paint cans, ice cream cones, pastries, and
hot dogs—as well as for his landscapes
and figure paintings. Thiebaud is associat-
ed with the pop art movement. Thiebaud
uses heavy pigment and exaggerated
colors to depict his subjects, and well-
defined shadows characteristic of
advertisements.
Congratulations to Olivia Kim and Marcus
Burleson for winning First and Second Place, respectively, for the State of Virgin-
ia Elementary Division of the Youth Art Month Flag Contest. Students were asked to design art which highlighted Virginia and the theme, "Your Art, Your Story". Winning entries will go on to compete at the Nation-al Level. The winning design will be made
into a flag and flown at the National Art Education Conference in the Fall of 2019.
Olivia and Marcus, and their art, will be featured in “The Bull Run Observer” news-
paper and on the Prince William County School Webpage in March in celebration of
Youth Art Month! Congratulations to Olivia and Marcus!
MARCH IS YOUTH ART MONTH!!
Youth Art Month is a month dedicated to promoting awareness and knowledge about the
importance of “THE ARTS” in a child’s education.
Consider these “ART EDUCATION FAST FACTS” and support “THE ARTS” in YOUR School!
A student involved in the arts is four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement.
Students who take four years of arts and music classes average 100 points higher on their SAT
scores than students who take only one-half year.
Low Income students who are highly engaged in the arts are twice as likely to graduate college as
their peers with no art education.
93 percent of Americans believe that the arts are vital to providing a well-rounded education.
The arts are recognized as a core academic subject under the Federal Elementary and Secondary
Education Act, and 48 States have adopted Standards for Learning in the Arts.
72 percent of business leaders say that “creativity” is the number one skill they are seeking when
hiring.
Two-Thirds of public school teachers believe that the arts are getting crowded out of the school
day.
97 percent of elementary schools nationwide don’t offer dance and 96 percent don’t offer theater.

Pre-KG Play Date
Snow days and 2-hour delays…..OH MY!!! Our schedule has been really thrown off but looking
forward to getting back on track.
The 4th and 5th grade classes have just finished up with fitness/wellness testing for the second
time and we have seen a lot of improvement. Those students who have passed the tests will
not have to re-take in April. Those students needing more time to improve or are close to
passing will have another chance in April.
During our delays, we were able to play pillo polo hockey games with much success- watch out,
we have some future CAPS coming along. We also finished up with jump rope skills and we
were able to work on volleyball skills from mid- February to the end of February. We will start
basketball on March 4th.
Please remember to wear tennis shoes/sneakers on PE days. If your student needs to be ex-
cused from PE, please send in a note from home. The note is good for one week, which is 2 PE
classes. If your student is unable to participate after the 2 PE classes, then a doctor’s note is
required to excuse them. Students unable to participate in PE are also given an alternate
activity to do during recess.
Please remember to send in water bottles with students for PE and please put your students’
name on the water bottle.
Ask your student about finding their resting heart rate and what their max heart rate should be.
We’ve also discussed personal hygiene, hand washing and we have reviewed class expectations
and grading in PE.
We are excited to announce our books
for One Author, One School! This
year’s books are by Erica Perl and
she’ll be visiting Bristow Run later this
month! Grades K and 1 will be reading
The Great Louweezie and Grades 2-5
will read When Life Gives You OJ. Be
sure to save the date for our
One Author, One School Celebration
on
Tuesday, March 5th at 6:45pm.
Look for more information through-
out the month! Happy Reading!
Dear Parents,
We will be having our annual playdates for the integrated preschool class at Bristow Run Elementary School. The purpose of the playdates is to give families who live in the Bristow Run school zone an opportunity to have their preschool aged child(ren) (age 4 by September 30, 2019) be a part of our class. The integrated preschool class consists of six students with special needs and six typically developing students. The goal is that the six students will model age appropriate behavior, social skills, and communication skills to the students with special needs in a safe environment. If you are interested, please email me at [email protected] to make an appointment to bring your child in for a playdate (the playdates will be conducted Monday – Friday from 12:30pm – 1:00pm). Once we have scheduled a playdate, you will sign into the building and let the office know that you are at the school for a playdate. I will come and take your child to the classroom for the playdate. We ask that you stay in the front lobby during the playdate. Please be aware that we only have six spaces available, and a lottery system will be used to select the students. Only students who meet the age and residency requirements will be considered. Please feel free to pass this information to other families who may be interest-ed. I look forward to meeting you and your child! Respectfully,
Sonya McGinnis
