She’s happy to follow in her famous mother’s footsteps. “My mom has been a role model to me not only in my career, but in my life. Q: I’m a big fan of

Tolon, Washington, D.C.
A: The Tony Award win-ner, 37, who plays a dance
teacher on the ABC Fam-ily series (Mondays), has studied jazz, tap, and
ballet, but she doesn’t consider herself a ballerina. “A true bunhead is someone who dedicates her life to the art of ballet and spends 20 hours
a day with her hair in a bun!” she says.

WALTER SCOTT ASKS…
DICK VAN DYKEThe legendary star, 87, will receive the Life Achieve-ment Award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 27 (TNT and TBS).
What’s been the high point of your career?
Probably Mary Poppins. I loved being in that movie. The chimney sweep number with Julie [Andrews] was the most fun. I’ve always been very lucky when it came to leading ladies—Julie and Mary Tyler Moore—people who were not only very talented but very nice. You and your wife [makeup artist Arlene Silver, 41] will celebrate one year of marriage next month. How is newlywed life? Unbelievable! It’s one of the smartest moves I ever made. She makes me happy. She’s very mature for her age, and I’m very immature for my age, so it’s just about right! You’ve performed with a barbershop quartet, the Vantastix, since 2000. What’s that been like? It’s my favorite thing to do. It’s kind of my retirement amusement. I don’t play golf. I have more fun singing and dancing.Do you enjoy being a great-grandfather? I love it. They call me crazy grandpa! I have four kids, seven grand-kids, and four great-grandkids. Maybe I can become a great-great-grandfather if I hang on! Send questions to [email protected] or P.O. ONE FROM THE HEART
They may have been separated by an ocean growing up, but Aaron Neville and Keith Richards had a love of doo-wop music in common. Now they join forces on Neville’s
new album, My
True Story, on which the soul-ful tenor covers such classics as “Tears on My Pillow,” “This Magic Moment,” and
“Under the Boardwalk.” Richards, who produced along with Don Was, plays guitar. The result? A heartfelt, tuneful tribute to two master musi-cians’ mutual inspirations.
AUSTEN POWERSTo celebrate the publication of Pride and
Prejudice 200 years ago this week, Paula Byrne, author of the biography The Real Jane
Austen, offers these facts about the novelist:• Her original draft of Pride and Prejudice
was titled First Impressions and was rejected by a top publisher. • She accepted a proposal from her best friend’s brother, but changed her mind the next morning.• Her deep dislike of the French was fueled by her cousin’s husband’s death by guillotine during the Revolution. For more, go to Parade.com/austen

Great Super Bowl coming up!’ ” Then he’ll grab a plate of wings (“a must for football”) or a grinder, choose his own angle of repose, and lose himself in the onscreen action. —Kate Meyers

meril Lagasse’s long love a air with food and sport began in his hometown of Fall River, Mass., where as a kid he’d follow up a game of baseball in the park with pizza
at Marzilli’s Bakery. “They had an old-fashioned coal oven,” recalls the 53-year-old chef, “and their bread and pizza were phenomenal.” During foot-ball season, the policy at Lagasse’s home was simple: open door, game on. His mom was head chef and his dad helped with everything from shopping to bartending. “My mom is Portuguese, and food has always been a big part of the house-hold. It was nothing to have 30 to 50 people over watching a game.”
Lagasse’s entertaining impulse runs equally deep, so on Super Bowl Sunday he likes to throw his own special bash. A New Orleanian for three decades—and a Saints season-ticket holder for almost as long—he’s thrilled that next week’s big game will be in the Big Easy. “New Orleans is
a great foot ball town,” says the restaurateur, who will hold Super Bowl celebrations all week long in his three local establishments (Emeril’s New Orleans, Emeril’s Delmonico, and NOLA). “The city has
extra ordinary food, hospitality, and music, plus a vibe that you can’t explain because it’s so cool.”
When hosting at home, he’s learned that meticu-lous planning allows for pain-free partying. “Your guests aren’t going to have fun if you’re stressed out,” he says. The festivities begin more than an

6 As you age,
volunteering can:
(a) Decrease depression
(b) Improve your sex life
(c) Both of the above
Answer: (c). It’s well established
that middle-aged and older
people who spend time volunteer-
ing are less prone to depression,
but it was a pleasant surprise
when University of Pittsburgh
researchers found that a sense
of “higher purpose” in life, often
achieved through volunteering, led
women to report more enjoyable
sex lives.

active and sociable, you
can expect to add how
many years to your life span?

Answer: (d). According to a major
2012 study in the British Medical
Journal, people 75 or older who
“swam, walked, or did gymnas-
tics” (meaning, in Brit speak, they
attended stretching and toning
classes) and who had a “rich or
moderate social network” lived
more than fi ve years longer than
people who were isolated and
sedentary. Even “the old-
est old,” past age 85, could
expect an extra four years of
life if they remained active
and socially engaged.

rette reduces life span by
about 11 minutes. The reason,
according to the scientists
who conducted the study, is
that hours of sitting lead to an
increased risk of diabetes and
heart disease and so may have
an even greater impact on
longevity than smoking.

it’s too late to change now.
Answer: False. Recent research
shows that people who quit smok-

of life over those who continued to
puff. And a 2012 study by research-
ers at the Cooper Institute in Dallas
concluded that people who started
to exercise in middle age—even
if they only walked a few times a
week—were healthier further into
old age than people who never
started exercising.

1Which of these is most
likely to improve your
memory after age 50?
(a) Solving crossword or
sudoku puzzles
(b) Going on regular walks
(c) Taking ginkgo biloba

Answer: (b). Human brains typically
shrink with age, impairing memory
(and explaining why your car keys
keep disappearing). But a revelatory
study published in October found
that physically active older people
experienced less brain shrinkage
than sedentary seniors, even those
who engaged in “mentally stimulat-

(a) Sitting down

(c) Doing tai chi
(d) Taking shark cartilage pills
Answer: (c). In controlled experi-

cartilage have failed to reliably
relieve knee pain, but a 2011
review of multiple studies of tai
chi—that famously fl owing series

that it is generally effective at

When I adjust the antenna on
my radio, I can usually get bet-
ter reception. But when I walk
away, the reception gets bad
again. Why does this happen?
—Jaime Blanco, Hialeah, Florida
While you’re touching the antenna, you increase its size—with your body! The slight moisture of human hands also plays a role, increasing the con-ductivity between you and the antenna. So when you let go and walk away, the reception gets worse. But if you moved the antenna to a good position, the reception may still be better than it was before you adjusted it. Simple solutions to poor reception include: (1) fully extending the antenna; (2) setting the stereo-mono switch to mono; and (3) wrap-ping the antenna in aluminum foil and moving the radio closer to a window.

I’d hardly told anyone about the donations.
The captain explained that 10 years ago, he’d found stacks of my novels in a makeshift library. I almost fell out of my chair. I had traveled there to “repay” the thanks from the sailor on the submarine. But here was this captain thanking me. For the next few hours, we hung out and played pool, marvel-ing at one undeniable fact: There’s nothing like the power of “thanks.”
When I got home, I decided to track down the sailor from the submarine. I called him and tried to express how his note had touched me, but he seemed quiet, so I asked if he was okay. After a long pause, he told me that he’d lost his mother to breast cancer a few days earlier.
As the blood seeped from my face, I told him that my mother had recently died of breast cancer, too. Right then, I understood the real reason I was talking to him. “I think I’m supposed to give you a message,” I said, my voice crack-ing. With that, I shared the most helpful piece of advice I’d received in the weeks after my mom passed: Our mothers never leave us. Ever.
I could hear him crying quietly on the other end of the line. More than a decade ago, this man’s note had put me on a path that led me halfway around the world; later, it brought me back to him at the very moment he was in need. Some-times we feel alone in the universe. But sometimes it is clear that we are profoundly connected.
Brad Meltzer’s newest thriller, The Fifth Assassin, is out now.
captain from Albuquerque turned to me and said, “I want to thank you for donating all those books.”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Sure,” she replied, and we shipped off 10,000 thrillers. It was so easy, I called another publisher, and another. All in all, the USO delivered 40,000 books to troops.
Fast-forward 11 years: I was on a USO tour with other authors last fall. We planned to visit eight bases in 10 days. About halfway through the trip, we were sharing stories with some soldiers in a briefi ng room when a dark-haired

Shortly after 9/11, I got an email from a sailor sta-tioned on a submarine.
He had found one of my novels on the boat and was writing to say thank you for entertaining him.
The note struck me. If a novel could help take a service member’s mind off things, I wanted to send many more books overseas. I called my publisher to see if we could make a donation to the USO.
