Started over 20 years ago, The Exceptional Foundation in Birmingham currently serves over 700 participants per year. There are currently other Exceptional Foundations operating in Alabama and Tennessee, as well as several other locations in various stages of development. The Exceptional Foundation of Charlotte provides a full-time year-round program to individuals with special needs who no longer receive services from local school systems. In addition, programs are offered to the high-school age population during school breaks throughout the year in the School Day Out, Spring Break, and Summer programs. All of TEFC’s programs include activities in their Clubhouse and gym, as well as community field trips to places such as Strike City Bowling, McGill Rose Garden, Kinetic Heights, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library, and Midtown Ballroom. Since 2016, TEFC has served over 94 participants in their special social events, in addition to those served in their day programs, and has provided financial scholarships to those with financial needs. In 2018 alone, TEFC has served over 40 participants and provided over $5,610 in scholarships. TEFC funding is raised through various events such as their signature fundraiser (Dinnertainment), a local 5K run held in the fall, various corporate sponsorships, matching donations, grants, and individual supporters.
