•The overarching goal of providing supports and specialized instruction to enable students to access the core curriculum is not changing.•The framework of establishing eligibility and creating Section 504 Plans and IEP’s is not changing.•The individualized supports to address the unique needs of students may change as “what” students learn and “how” instruction is provided shifts with the Common Core.

How do Changes to the Statewide Assessment System Impact Students with Disabilities?

•California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) – ELA, Math, Science – No change unless students’ needs have changed

•California Standards Test (CST) or California Modified Assessment (CMA) for ELA or Math with Accommodations and/or Modifications – Change to Smarter Balanced Field Test with access to Smarter balanced Universal Tools, Designed Supports Accommodations.

What Can Parents do to Support your Student?

Parent Support for the ELA Shifts…Provide more non‐fiction text, and read aloud with your child.

Ask your child to share his/her textbooks (Science, Social Studies, Health) with you.

Ask your child to give you “evidence” supporting their beliefs from what their reading or experiences.

Encourage reading and writing, and allow it to be “hard” or for your child to “grapple” at times.

Parent Support for the Math Shifts…Ensure that your child knows his/her Math Facts.

Engage in a real world Math problem/discussion when it exists in your own life.

Share your thinking, about how you would find the answer to a problem, with your child.

Get to know what your child is learning at their particular grade level.
