Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend Happy MLK weekend! Once again, America cele-brates the historic achievements of the charismatic, mid-20th century, Baptist minister who was motivated by his deeply-held Christian principles to champion (and eventually give up his life) for the inherent rights each of us possesses from God. Reverend King (1929-1968) changed the world. So can we, by living our faith in the public sphere, without apology or remorse, and always arguing from deeply held faith and moral convictions, nor partisan politics! As is our parish custom, the rectory will be closed on Monday, January 15th, and the 5:30 PM Mass will NOT be celebrated.

Have You Noticed? Because of the generosity of so many of our parishioners, we are well on our way to temperature stabilization for our beautiful church. Many have commented on the comfortable conditions they experienced during the Christmas season and recent cold snap. Great! Engineers have completed the design phase of the complementary cooling system, and we are currently interviewing contractors for the project. Thank you again for your interest in maintaining the historic church building we inherited from faithful congregations of the past 100+ years! More to come.

2018 Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal We have already begun to plan to kick off the annual Archdiocesan Appeal which directly supports our many works of charity, ongoing evangelization, needy parishes, children’s faith formation in Catholic schools and Religious Education programs, future clergy formation, and dependable elder care for priests and Religious men and women. Letters from Monsignor Sandi will be sent out soon. We ask everyone to please consider making a sacrificial donation to this once-a-year Appeal. * * * * * * * *

Annual Blessing of Throats At the regularly scheduled 9:00 AM Mass on Saturday, February 3rd, the celebrant will bless parishioners throats in honor of the feast day of Saint Blaise.

Did You Miss This “Vanity” Piece?

“Look inward, not at a mirror. Spending too much time looking in the mirror makes men and women conceited and focused on how their appearance, rather than their behavior, affects others. When vanity becomes a part of life, you begin to dialogue with the mirror with an attitude that is almost or totally narcissistic, arriving at a self-referential pathology. I think we must be very careful when we try to judge ourselves. “We must be careful to not fall into the evaluation of the mirror because it will deceive us; it always deceives us. With the exception of brushing my hair or washing my face, I try not to look at myself in the mirror. It is something you have to beware of constantly because vanity can catch you anywhere. Instead, I try, once or twice a day, to look inside myself and reflect on things that have happened through the day … the things that have happened within me. It is important to judge myself by what I have done, the decisions I have made, or the attitude that I have had. I think I am a sinner whom God has loved very much and still loves. And this makes me very happy.”

Excerpts, Pope Francis, Video Conference for Sophia University students, Tokyo, Japan, Dec. 21, 2017

PARISH Advisory COUNCIL

Those who were chosen by lots to represent five different demographics of Holy Trinity Parish will meet with the Pastoral Staff at Scaletta’s Restaurant on West 77th Street, at 5:00 PM on Sunday, February 11th to discuss plans for the upcoming Lenten season. Please plan to attend.

Holy Trinity Special Collection for the Schools There will be a second collection next week to assist in Holy Trinity’s annual assessment for the Catholic Schools.

Sophia, ChurchMouse Reporting unseen works of faith, hope and charity to uplift you.

I found a very apt quote for this holiday weekend, honoring Rev. Martin King, Jr. See what you think. What the world expects of Christians is that Christians should speak out, loud and clear, and that they should voice their condemnation of [World War II atrocities] in such a way that never a doubt, never the slightest doubt, could rise in the heart of the simplest man. That they should get away from abstraction and confront the bloodstained face history has taken on today. The grouping we need is a grouping of men resolved to speak out clearly and to pay up … personally.

Philosopher, Albert Camus, 1948

March for Life – Pilgrimage to Washington, DC Be a Witness for Life. Many people are dissatisfied with the state of affairs in the country today. The March for Life provides us with a unique opportunity to show the diversity and strength of those who support both the sanctity of life and our first right as expressed by our Founders – the Right to Life (then comes Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness). While this is a huge event, but don’t expect to see media coverage – too counter-cultural, not enough popular interest. Join hundreds of thousands from throughout our nation to pray and publicly witness for – in the words of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. – all our brothers and sisters, Friday, January 19, 2018. There are buses leaving throughout the Archdiocese. Our closest is from Sacred Heart Church, 457 W. 51st St. There will be Mass at 6:15 AM; the bus leaves at 7:00 sharp. The cost for the trip is $55; reservations for the bus required. For further information: Sr. Pia Jude – 646-476-0931 or email [email protected].
