JANUARY 22ND - THE FEAST OF ST. VINCENT PALLOTTI
WHO IS ST. VINCENT PALLOTTI?
St. Vincent Pallotti was known to his contemporaries as the Apostle of Rome. Born
on April 21st, 1795 in Rome, the third of ten children of pious parents, Peter Paul and
Maria Magdalena Pallotti.
Ordained as a priest on May 16th, 1818, he was a champion of the Church’s mission at
home and overseas and a pioneer of the modern lay apostolate. His life was marked
by one particular characteristic: in understanding the role of Jesus as the Apostle of the
Eternal Father, he realized the importance of all people actively working in the minis-
try of the Church and he fervently spent his energies trying to ingrain it into the mind
and hearts of people around him and in his followers, the Pallotines. He said: “God is
love. God is perfect in loving man, and so man must be perfect in loving his
neighbours.” The very sight of human misery moved St. Pallotti profoundly. Few
people were able to declare as he did: “I wish to be food to feed the hungry, clothing to
dress the naked, drink to quench the thirst of the poor, light to enlighten the blind, life to vivify all the dead and awaken
them to the life of grace.”
His life and ideals are ever fresh even today, the Third Millennium. St. John Paul II in his encyclical Novo Millennio
Ineunte writes: “Therefore the Church of the third Millennium will need to encourage all the baptized and confirmed to
be aware of their active responsibility in the Church’s life.” (No.46). According to St. Pallotti, every person must be an
apostle and may fulfil his apostolic task in his own field in so far as he was able. The law of love obliges us to work for
the salvation of our neighbour and to spread the faith in every way we can. He established the Society of the Catholic
Apostolate, Pallottine priests, brothers and sisters are today engaged in the apostolate of the Church throughout the
world.
For St. Pallotti, Mary is first and foremost Mother of the Incarnate Word, Jesus and he had a very great devotion to her.
He loved the title “Mother of Divine Love” and carried her picture everywhere. He was so convinced of Mary’s power-
ful protection and potent intercession that he used to instruct people to place themselves in the hands of Mary and to for-
get all their worries: “Honour the Mother of God! Proclaim her glories endlessly, Long live Mary, Mother of Mercy, the
refuge of sinners!” Mary, Queen of the Apostles is the patron of the Pallottines.
We live at a time when people seek personal experience of God and search for authentically holy people. In St. Pallotti,
we have a model for modern man seeking God experience. We have a man who ‘tasted and savoured God’, the Infinite
Love. Through dark nights and dreary paths of excruciating agony he journeyed to reach the summit of perfection. St.
Pallotti maintained the path of mystical heights was one of continuous self-denial. One can see it in his saying: “Lord,
destroy my life, let your life be my life”. He had but one dream, one goal and one longing – the glory of God. His one
ambition: to prefer always the pleasures of God. “The most precious will of God be our food, our drink, our rest, our
paradise on earth.”
St. Pallotti received from God many gifts and blessings such as miraculous power, reading of souls, healing powers, con-
verting hardened sinners, expelling devils, removing temptations, restoring peace of mind and predicated future events.
He was above all a mystic endowed with supernatural experiences such as levitation, ecstasy, bilocation and other mysti-
cal phenomena. He died on January 22nd, 1850 and was canonized by Pope St. John XXIII on January 20th, 1963.
As the ‘Herald of a Participatory Church’, the Forerunner of Catholic Action’, ‘the Gem and Ornament of Roman
Clergy’, ’the Saint of the Confessional’, the Friend of the Poor and the Founder of a Congregation, St. Pallotti is not
merely a personality of a by-gone years, he continues to speak to the generation of today and his unique appeal lingers
on through the centuries.
Today, January 22nd, as we celebrate the Feast of St. Vincent Pallotti, with our Pallottine priests, Fr. Suresh and
Fr. Naveen, let us offer prayers of thanksgiving for their loving and dedicated service to our Cayman community so far
away from their home in India. Source: St. Vincent Pallotti by Augustine Koleneberry

January 22nd, 2017 - Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
From Fr. Suresh
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading: Isaiah 8:23 - 9:3
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17
Gospel: Matthew 4:12-23
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION “Jesus proclaimed the Gospel of the kingdom
and cured every disease among the people.” - Matthew 4:23
THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME… IT TAKES COURAGE AND COMMITMENT
"He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him." Peter, Andrew, James, and
John's lives would never be the same. They were going about their usual business — fishing on the Sea of Galilee —
when Jesus approached them and said, "Come after me." And that's just what they did. "At once they left their nets and
followed him." Such a quick response to such a radical request!
What compelled these men to leave their livelihood to follow the Lord? His promise to them was that he would make
them "fishers of men." Perhaps they thought that promise sounded fabulous. But it seems more likely that it was Christ
himself who drew the men. There must have been something utterly attractive about him, and completely trustworthy.
Otherwise, it seems unbelievable that these men would have been so quick to respond to his call.
This compelling man is the same Christ who calls us. We hear his voice in a different way, of course, through the
Church and through the Bible, through his Spirit in our hearts, but it is nonetheless the same Jesus of Nazareth who
asks us to follow him. Have we allowed ourselves to be drawn by his voice? Are we open to a real encounter with the
Lord who changes lives?
If our relationship with Jesus does not transform us, if it does not change us into different, better people moment by
moment and day by day, then chances are that we are not truly encountering him. He is too powerful to be inconse-
quential. It might take some courage and commitment to come into authentic contact with the Lord, but when we do,
our lives will never be the same.

ST. IGNATIUS PARISH AND SCHOOL CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISER PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
ST. IGNATIUS/DOROTHY RICE SCHOLARSHIP FUND —
NOW IN OUR 20TH YEAR ASSISTING FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL TUITION!
The St. Ignatius/Dorothy Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund assists families who are not able to afford the full tuition at St.
Ignatius School (which averages about $9500 per year). Each year we help to keep children in our school who otherwise
couldn’t afford a Catholic Education. Over the past 19 years we have assisted over 170 children from about 115 families!
The average child in this programme receives about $200-$300 per month off the fees. In return for the help, the families
actively contribute to the school and parish in a variety of ways (helping with fundraisers, chaperoning school trips, clean-
ing the grounds, assisting at sports days, serving on committees, etc.).
How you can help:
Donation envelopes are available at the front entrance of St. Ignatius Church or in the church office. Donations can
be dropped in the collection, sent in by mail or dropped off at the church office. If paying by cheque, please make
your donations payable to: ST. IGNATIUS, and in the memo, please indicate “Scholarship Fund”.
On-line transfers can be done through Butterfield Bank… contact May in the parish office for details.
Perhaps your company would like to assist with regular contributions OR a one-off donation?
Please consider the Scholarship Fund from time to time when doing your charitable work throughout the year!
Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the fund during recent months and during the past several years!
