DID YOU KNOW WE COLLECT POSTAGE STAMPS?

Collecting postage stamps is a fundraiser for Development and Peace.

The postage stamps must be used, however, the edges should not be damaged. These stamps are sent to the Development and Peace Main office down east. Or, if someone is travelling east for meetings, they usually will take the stamps with them.

Postage Stamp Collectors, called philatelists, purchase our stamps and the proceeds of those sales, are used in the Global South to help people and villages in need.

If you are not doing anything with the used postage stamps on your mail, please bring them in to us. If you can put them in an envelope and leave them in the food baskets in the foyer. It would be great.

You can also ask your family and friends for their stamps. It is free of charge and this is one more way that we can use to assist people in need, wherever they live.

CATECHESIS ON “ACTS OF THE APOSTLES” (10)

After Stephen’s martyrdom, the “race” of the Word of God seems to suffer a setback, given the outbreak of “a great persecution against the Church in Jerusalem” (Acts 8:1). Following this, the Apostles stayed in Jerusalem, while other Christians dispersed in other places of Judea and in Samaria. In the Book of the Acts, the persecution appears as the permanent state of life of the disciples, in keeping with what Jesus said: “If they persecuted me, they will persecute you” (John 15:20). However, instead of extinguishing the fire of evangelization, the persecution fuels it even more. We have heard what Deacon Philip did, who began to evangelize the cities of Samaria, and numerous were the signs of liberation and healing that accompanied the proclamation of the Word. At this point, the Holy Spirit marks a new stage of the Gospel’s journey: He drives Philip to go and meet a stranger with a heart open to God. Philip rose and went with enthusiasm and, on a deserted and dangerous road he met a minister of the Queen of Ethiopia, the administrator of her treasure. This man, a eunuch, after having been in Jerusalem to worship, is returning to his country. He was a Jewish proselyte of Ethiopia. Seated in his chariot, he was reading the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, in particular, the fourth canto of the “servant of the Lord.” Philip ran to the chariot and asked him: “Do you understand what you are reading?” (Acts 8:30). The Ethiopian answered: “How can I unless someone guides me?” (Acts 8:31). That powerful man recognized he had need of being guided to understand the Word of God. He was a great banker, he was the Minister of the Economy, he had all the power of money, but he knew that without an explanation he couldn’t understand; he was humble. And this dialogue between Philip and the Ethiopian makes one reflect also on the fact that it’s not enough to read the Scripture, one must understand the meaning, find the “juice” by going beyond the “rind,” draw the Spirit that animates the letter. As Pope Benedict said at the beginning of the Synod on the Word of God, “the exegesis, the true reading of Sacred Scripture, is not only a literary phenomenon, [...]. It is the movement of my existence” (Meditation, October 6, 2008). To enter in the Word of God is to be willing to come out of one’s limitations to encounter God and be conformed to Christ who is the living Word of the Father. So, who is the protagonist of what the Ethiopian was reading? Philip offers his interlocutor the key to the reading: that meek suffering Servant, who doesn’t react to evil with evil and who, although considered a failure and sterile and, finally, taken out of their midst, liberates the people from iniquity and bears fruit for God; it is in fact that Christ, whom Philip and the whole Church proclaim! Who with Easter has redeemed us all. Finally, the Ethiopian acknowledges Christ and asks for Baptism and professes faith in the Lord Jesus. This account is beautiful; however, who drove Philip to go to the desert to meet this man? Who drove Philip to run to the chariot? It was the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the protagonist of evangelization. “Father, I’m going to evangelize.” “Yes, and what do you do?” “Ah, I proclaim the Gospel and I say who Jesus is, I try to convince people that Jesus is God.” Dear, this isn’t evangelization; if the Holy Spirit isn’t there, there isn’t evangelization. This can be proselytism, publicity ... But evangelization is allowing yourself to be guided by the Holy Spirit; it must be He who drives you to the proclamation, to the proclamation with witness, also with martyrdom, also with the word.

After having made the Ethiopian meet with the Risen One - the Ethiopian encounters the Risen Jesus because he understands that prophecy - Philip disappears, the Spirit takes him and sends him to do something else. I said that the protagonist of evangelization is the Holy Spirit, and what is the sign that you, Christian, are an evangelizer? Joy, even in martyrdom. And Philip went full of joy elsewhere to preach the Gospel. May the Spirit make baptized men and women who proclaim the Gospel draw others, not to themselves but to Christ, men and women who are able to make room for God’s action, who are able to render others free and responsible before the Lord.

CHRISTIANITY AND RELATIONSHIPS

Christianity is an invitation into a different form of life - a life in which you find meaning in your neighbour. Christianity is about transforming the way in which we live here and now in the world. To accomplish that, we need to take stock of our lives, day to day, month to month. Ask yourself: Do I have a spiritual life? Do I practice the Catholic social teachings?

So that we can call ourselves Christians, we need to have a relationship with our Heavenly Father, by putting our faith in Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord and striving for holiness. To be Christians, we also need to have a relationship with our brothers and sisters in need, by seeing Christ in them and spending time getting to know them, grow to love them and help them when possible.

Poverty can have many forms. Lack of, food, relationships, shelter, clothing, medication, money, spiritual, etc.

Through the PROJECT NORTHERN ALBERTA – Cadotte Lake, we have sustained our Christianity and built those relationships with our friends in the North of our province, mitigating some of their needs.

On October 26 & 27, weather permitting, we are going to visit our friends in Cadotte Lake. We are bringing them winter clothing, food and toiletries. If you have any clean and gently used winter clothing ready to donate, we will take it with us.

Ministries and individuals will lead the congregation through the Rosary using the ambo microphone OR from the pews. Two minutes before the Rosary begins, announce the name of your ministry and that you will be leading the Rosary. If your group prefers to use a language other than English, you are welcome to do so for all or part of the prayer. (The congregation will likely answer in English.) Pray the Rosary prayers only: Announce each mystery by the title only (no description) prior to each decade and end each decade with the Fatima Prayer. At the end of the five mysteries, pray the Hail Holy Queen. No litany, no song, no extra prayers. Thank you.

Even if we take as little as ten minutes each day to read a few lines of the Bible, or one of the readings assigned for daily Mass, this encounter with Christ will change our lives.

HOW ARE WE CALLED TO LIVE?

One of the foremost moral theologians of the last century wrote, “Morality can never involve merely an abstract, lifeless system of imperatives, an accumulation of laws or precepts. It has to do with love for love, the response of a person living in a community of persons, to the individual call of the living God, a response throughout the whole of life [Haring, Bernard, Morality is for Persons, 1971, p. 20.] The identification of morality with abstract law and life-denying commandments is pervasive. How do we revision moral living as the call to fullness of life? With the law of love as our command, we will relook at what it means to live a ‘good life.’

THE STORY OF THE ROSARY PART 2

Last week we introduced the history of the Rosary. Now we continue with the Mysteries over the next few weeks.

Joyful Mysteries (said on Mondays and Saturdays)

The Annunciation – Luke 1:26-38

The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her “Rejoice, oh highly favoured daughter! The Lord is with you.” Mary wondered what this greeting meant and Gabriel said “You shall conceive and bear a Son and give Him the name Jesus.” Mary responded with humility “I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say”. Then the angel left her. The Visitation – Luke 1:39-56

When the angel Gabriel told Mary that she was to be the Mother of Jesus, he also told her that her elderly cousin Elizabeth had conceived a son. Mary immediately set out to visit Elizabeth in the hill country. “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leapt in her womb and she cried out ‘Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb’.” Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months and then returned home. The Birth of Jesus – Luke 2:1-7

It was the time of the census and Mary and Joseph went from Nazareth to Bethlehem to register. Mary was with child. While they were there, she gave birth to a Son, Jesus, wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger because there was no room at the inn at Bethlehem. The Presentation in the Temple – Luke 2:22-32

It was the custom for a new mother to be purified at the temple and the first born male to be consecrated to the Lord. When the day came for that to take place, Mary and Joseph presented the Child Jesus in the temple where Simeon received Him into his arms and, with the prophetess Anna, proclaimed Him Saviour of the world. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple – Luke 2:41-52

Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem every year for the Feast of the Passover. When Jesus was twelve years old, they went again for the celebration and when it was over, Jesus remained behind, unknown to His parents. When they couldn’t find Him on their journey, they returned to Jerusalem. On the third day they found Him sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. Mary said to Him “Son, why have you done this to us? You see that your father and I have been searching for you in sorrow.” He answered “Why did you search for me? Did you not know I had to be in My Father’s house?” Jesus returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them.

WHAT IS IT?

The RCIA is a process for anyone who

wishes to join the Catholic faith.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

RCIA adapted for children is intended for:

1. Children who have never been baptized

as infants and are of catechetical age

(7 to 14 years old).

2. Children who were baptized in another

Christian tradition and now wish to

become part of the Catholic Community.

3. Children who were baptized as Catho-

lics but have not received the sacraments

of Eucharist or Confirmation.

HOW LONG IS THE PROCESS?

September 25, 2019 – May 20, 2020

Children of catechetical ages 7 to 14

years old, need to be registered in the

RCIA adapted for children on or before

Sept. 25, 2019 to prepare for the

reception of the Sacrament of Initiation

(Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucha-
