Merry Christmas! I hope your New Year’s celebrations were fantastic, that you were able to take some time to relax and visit with family. I take this opportunity to thank all of you for the many kindnesses shown to me over this Christmas season. Your many cards, gifts, and verbal best wishes are most appreciated and gratefully accepted. The Parish Staff wishes to extend their thanks for your kindnesses. Thank you to all those who were instrumental in preparing for, and making our celebrations so joyous and meaningful: Joan and her "decorating group" for all the wonderful decorations; to David, musicians and music ministry; all Ushers, Ministers of the Eucharist, the Word, Gift Bearers, Hospitality and Sacristans; to our Altar Servers, Parking Security, and Collection Counters. A special note of thanks is extended to Sr. Kathy, Sr. Rebecca, Jozefa, Colleen, Marion, Ann and Samantha, Deacon Rich, Michael, Bruce and Michael for their dedication and hard work now and throughout the year. Last but not least, to each and every one of you who make St. Clare your spiritual home: Thank You! Your prayers, love, service, and financial support are what keep us thriving as a Eucharistic community. May God bless you and bring you and your loved ones much peace, happiness, and healing in the New Year. You will always be in my prayers, and I ask you to remember me in yours. Happy New Year! Epiphany 2020 This first Sunday of the Year is the celebration of the Epiphany, remembering that the child born in the dark of night in a lowly manger is revealed as the manifestation (epiphany) of God. Traditionally, three events in the life of Christ are remembered today as manifestations of God’s presence and action through Christ: the visit of the Magi, the wedding feast at Cana, and the baptism of Jesus in the Jor- dan River. All of these manifestations are “lights” that shine on Christ, revealing a deeper understanding of who he is. Blessings of the Homes A favorite tradition we started a few years ago continues today on the Feast of the Epiphany. We take home chalk that has been blessed and mark our doors with this inscription: 20+C+M+B+20. The number of the New Year is split at the beginning and end. The initials C, M, and B represent Casper, Melchior and Balthasar and the three crosses stand for "saint." The letters also abbreviate the prayer: "Christus Mansionem Benedicat" which means May Christ Bless this House. So today after dinner, gather around the inside of your front door, and use the chalk to inscribe the numbers and letters on the frame or on the door while saying: "May Christ bless this house". Throughout the year those who come and go through that door will enjoy the blessing of Christ. Chalk is available by the Christmas manger at the front of the church. Be Bold! Back to school and back to “normal” We welcome back our teachers and students who return on Monday to our school after two weeks of vacation. We welcome back all ministries who resume their meetings and activities. Hopefully, all are well rested and ready to take on the new year enriching our faith, and much more! May our new year be blessed. Be Holy Adoration and Christmas Carols It is the last week of Christmas Season. Following our tradition on Wednesday we will gather during our Adoration time from 6 pm to 7 pm to pray and sing Christmas Carols in thanksgiving for a beautiful Christmas Season which comes to a close next Sunday. Our Parish Community

According to a survey taken in our local high schools, anxiety and depression are the #1 cause of stress among

our students. Helping our children cope in a fast paced, social media driven society is no easy task.

Kirsti Reeve, is a licensed professional counselor with Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan with over a decade

in the field. She will provide some guidance to us on how to recognize the signs and strategies on how to

manages them. Please join us in the social hall on 1/14/20 at 7:30 pm for this important event.

RSVP by calling the parish office 313-647-5060.

CALL TO SERVE OPPORTUNITY

Can you spare TWO HOURS to help feed the hungry?

Volunteers Needed to Help Fill our Pantry Cupboards

Friends, Family, St. Clare Community, lend us your ear and

hear our call to serve those who are hungry and face food

insecurity. After a season of feasting with our family and

friends there is no better time to pay it forward and come

together to help those in our local community who don't

have enough to eat.

Here is how it works: Gleaners Community Food Bank and

Kroger have teamed up to offer St. Vincent de Paul confer-

ences the opportunity to collect food for their local pantries.

This year we will be at the Kroger store in the Village - 16919

Kercheval, Grosse Pointe SATURDAY JANUARY 11th and SUN-

DAY JANUARY 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Here is what you do: Sign up for a two-hour shift on Saturday

or Sunday. Volunteers working at the store hand out sug-

gested shopping lists to customers as they enter the store

and ASK them to please consider purchasing an item on the

list for our pantry.

Customers indicate at check out what they have pur-

chased from the list and those items are deposited by volun-

teers in specially marked carts.

Volunteers working at check-out THANK the customers for

their purchase. When carts are full a volunteer driver brings

the food back to St. Clare where it is sorted in the Social Hall

(basement) and put into the pantry.

Grab a friend or family member and pay it forward.

Don't DELAY! - Sign Up TODAY!

Schedule is on the parking lot wall - near the Family Room

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Faith Formation

Our Thursday night sessions kick off with

speakers Michael and Shawn King. The

topic is Reclaiming Sunday – a special day

for God and family. Everyone is welcome.

Check the bulletin for details.

First Tuesday

Every week on Tuesday evening we

celebrate the Mass at 6:30 pm followed by

the Devotion to St. Michael. This allows

those of you who cannot make a daily

morning Mass the opportunity to come

one evening during the week.

On the First Tuesday of each month

following Mass we go out for something to

eat and drink and conversation. Everyone

is welcome! This is a great way to meet

new people and a great way to add a

sprinkle of faith into your week. For more

information contact Rachel Perkowski at:

Have a good week

St. Clare School

Welcome to the New Year.

The month of January is one of curriculum for the

students and professional development for the staff.

We look forward to rich lessons that have the stu-

dents digging deeper into attaining the Archdio-

cese of Detroit Standards for their grade levels. Many strive to go

beyond the standards designated for their grade levels. Teachers

will engage professional training which will fine tune their already

strong teaching techniques. Their training will have them reaching

their students in a deeper way.

Addressing curriculum and growth we look forward to being part

of the STAR testing program beginning next Fall. Unlike the Iowa

Standardized Test taken only at the beginning of each year, the

STAR testing program is electronic and given three times a year.

Academic strengths and weaknesses will be determined at the

beginning of the year. Midway through the year the STAR test will

be given again to monitor and adjust teaching objectives to more

uniquely meet the needs of each learner. Finally, at the end of

the year, the STAR test will be given again. Growth will be seen

from the beginning of the year to the end of the year without the

summer lapse we always contend with in interpreting scores.

Teachers will also be actively engaged in professional develop-

ment outside the school day. Working within the new IT Manage-

ment System the parish adopted, our staff will engage in interac-

tive use of many of the programs during instructional presentations

this month. The Michigan Round Table will also visit and lead an

exploratory discussion around diversity and inclusion this month.

Instead of me going on and on you can join us January 26 at our

Open House. You will see our vibrant learning and spiritual com-

munity in action. Peace to you all.

Families Connect School to Outreach Communities

The wealth of openness by all in our St. Clare of Montefalco

School Community would bring most to tears. This Fall I learned

of The Epiphany Educational Learning Center through a stu-

dent’s family who appreciated the one to one learning their

young person received and continues to receive at the center.

Ms. Taylor, the director, and Sr. Marie visited St. Clare and were

taken with energy and love they found in the school during a

regular school day. Spaces are very limited in this program but

these women managed to find room for two more young peo-

ple to benefit from their one to one instructional enrichment pro-

gram. Thank you St. Clare of Montefalco families for always put-

ting the well- being of children and their learning first.

is the great feast of the

Epiphany, the Three Kings.

These wise ones spread the

must be the wise ones

Spreading the news of the birth of the Sav-

ior. How will you do that this month?
