Dear Parishioners and Visitors: My story continues……. In 1998, the CMI Congregation held a Renewal Program for all CMI Priests working in the Continent of Africa in Nairobi, the Capital of Kenya. Our Priests who were serving in South Africa, Madagascar, Tanzania, Ghana and Kenya attended that Program. I met CMIs from all those African countries and I shared my desire to continue in Africa. All of them wholeheartedly welcomed me to the countries they were serving. After the Renewal Program, I visited several CMI Mission Centers in Kenya and had a first hand experience of a Mission in Kenya. The wonderful, vibrant CMI Missions in Kenya made me make the decision to move to Kenya and continue my ministry in the Continent of Africa. The Mission in Kenya was under a different Province of the CMI Congregation but those CMIs welcomed me to work with them. My Provincial Superior gave me the necessary permission to move to Kenya and I made the decision to join the CMIs in Kenya. At the conclusion of the Renewal Program, I went back to Tanzania with the plan to wind up the ministry in Tanzania at the end of that Academic Year and go to Kenya. Our students did well in their Final examination that year and we informed the Bishop of the Diocese of Kigoma, Tanzania, that we would end our ministry there at the end of that year. We handed over the administration of the School to the Diocese in November 1998 and my fellow CMI Priest went back to India and I moved to Kenya. The challenges I encountered in Tanzania were many but I have to admit that prior to our arrival in Tanzania, European missionaries had made immense sacrifices in Tanzania and other African countries. When I consider the difficulties and challenges encountered by the European missionaries, mine was nothing. My experiences in Tanzania seasoned my life as a Missionary. ( My story continues next week……) This week we have in the Gospel, the miraculous catch of fish at the command of Jesus. When Jesus told Simon to put out into the deep, Simon said: “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as you say and let down the net”. The communication between Jesus and Simon emphasizes the power and authority of Jesus. In our everyday life the response from Simon should have been, ’ We know fishing ! You are only a carpenter. We worked the whole night and caught nothing. Forget about that’. But what Simon did is: ‘You say and I’ll do it’. That is definitely a statement of faith. An utterly unprecedented catch of fish in a location that seemed hopelessly unproductive the night before. If Simon had not obeyed, there probably have been no catch. Christ rewards our simple efforts to obey him. What a vast difference when our lives become directed by the Lord! “At thy word, I will do it” . That response makes a big difference. What makes the difference? The difference is that your effort is now directed by Him. It is no longer doing it out of your experience and skills. Peter’s past experience would keep him from trying to catch any fish at that time of the day. Disciples obey Jesus even when it doesn’t make sense. Peter, in a way, tells Jesus that this request doesn’t make much sense to me, but I will obey you anyway. Sometimes, the things God wants us to do doesn’t make much sense to ourselves and to other people. But if God has spoken to us through his word, we must obey. This is what Simon did. Obedience to God’s commands always results in divine blessing. Here the blessing was a boatload of fish. When God tells you to do something, do it, even if it does not make sense to you at that time. God wants to work through you and wants to bless you. But you need to be like Simon who said, ’That does not make sense , but nevertheless at your word, I will obey’. Fr. Antony Vadakara, CMI—Your Pastor

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ’s total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God’s own life. We are to be-come what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this self giving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient. Yet the act of giving from our abundance, and attending to the needs of the poor, opens us up to participation in the changes the Reign of God requires. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GOD’S SUMMONS Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.” We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won’t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God’s messenger? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
