Around holidays, people tend to look fondly back on past celebrations and romanticize old relationships. For some, remembering the past is the best part of their holiday. That is the image we get from the first reading as the apostles look up to heaven after the Ascension. We too sometimes look at the great feasts of Christmas and Easter in that way. We may dwell on the beauty of the decorations, on the innocence of the baby Jesus, on the horror of his passion and death, or on the wonder of his resurrection. Then when the holy day is over, we go back to our normal routine. Perhaps we need an angel to chide us for “looking at the sky.” The angels were trying to tell the apostles two things. One was that Jesus would return as he left—in glory. This was not a time to say goodbye, but a time of hope; the Lord who had changed their lives so radically would change the world next. The second thing the angels were telling them was to begin following Jesus’ command to spread the Good News to all nations. Because of what the apostles accomplished, we are now Jesus’ witnesses to the world. We too have the hope of seeing Jesus come in glory, even as we see him now with the eyes of faith. Look, Up in the Sky!

Perhaps we need an angel to chide us for “looking at the sky.”

The angels were trying to tell the apostles two things.

St. Vincent de Paul May 5th Sunday Donation Request

Covid-19 and the shelter-at-home restrictions have impacted all of us in so many ways. Neighbors have been furloughed or laid off from their jobs and they are struggling to make ends meet. Rent and living expenses can easily exceed government aid, and our normal non-profit resources are becoming overwhelmed. If you would like to help residents struggling in San Carlos, please consider donating funds to St. Vincent de Paul this month. You can do this online by visiting our St. Vincent de Paul site under Parish Groups at www.stcharlesparish.org, or by mailing a check made out to St. Vincent de Paul to the parish office at 880 Tamarack Ave. If you are in need of help, please contact us at 650-343-4403.

Thank you for considering how you can help during this pandemic. Stay safe. You are all in our prayers.

Your St. Vincent de Paul Conference

Church Open for Visits St. Charles remains open for private prayer daily from 9:00am to 4:00pm. You may enter the church through the side doors of the parking lot. Please maintain social distancing and if you are concerned about sanitizing, bring your own disinfecting wipes, and take the wipes home after use.

CATHOLIC TV SUNDAY MASS

Each Sunday a Catholic TV Mass is aired on a number of TV channels throughout the Bay Area Dioceses, offered by Monsignor Harry Schlitt and Father Dave Ghiorso. The Catholic TV Mass focuses on our Catholic community for those who are home-bound, residing in assisted living, hospitalized or imprisoned and unable to attend Mass at their parish churches. You may find these Masses in the San Francisco Area each Sunday on KTSF (CH 26) at 6:00am, or KOFY (CH 13) at 6:00am or online any time at FatherHarry.org.

ALL GAVE SOME...SOME GAVE ALL

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Today’s celebration varies from place to place. In some parts of the United States, people gather for the Seventh Sunday of Easter, while other places celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. Several years ago, regions of bishops were permitted to de-cide whether to retain Ascension Day on Thursday, the fortieth day after Easter, or to move the celebration to the nearest Sunday. This new flexibil-ity in the Christian calendar has to do with the desire to gather the Church to celebrate its central feasts fully, and with the Eucharist. Increasingly, as priests serve remote and scattered parishes, this is not always possible mid-week. The Ascension is a key moment for grasping what life in Christ is all about. It is not about a departure, but rather a plan for presence. We who are nourished by the Lord’s body and blood in the Eucharist are transformed to be his abiding presence in the world. That is a truth so worth celebrating that we can adjust our calendar in order that the fullest possible gathering of the Church can be achieved.

Marriage Encounter Weekend

Married Couples: Would you like to relive the excitement, romance and passion from your honeymoon? Rekindle that spark on a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. S B : Jesus ascended into heaven, blessing His disciples and promising that they would soon receive the power of the Holy Spirit. We who have received that promised gift of the Spirit are now empowered to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth — to use our time and talents to spread the good news of salvation.

SAINT PHILIP NERI (1515-1595) May 26

In a shop near the Vatican, a group of Americans laughed as the shopkeeper showed off his fluent English and latest souvenir, a key ring whose papal portrait, when pressed, activated a recorded blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics scowled with disapproval. The shopkeeper grunted, “They’re a very somber order who’ve left the Church. I recognize them.” “By their long robes?” an American asked. “Many in Rome wear robes,” replied the shopkeeper. “It’s their long faces!” When Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was reason to be somber. Swiss Guards had been massacred on Saint Peter’s steps for defending the pope. Parts of Europe were abandoning the Church. But Philip resolved to be an “apostle of joy,” drawing especially the young to Christ—and frequent confession and Communion—by his sincere interest in their problems, prayerful example, and gentle humor. His “Oratory,” a movement as well as a place, provided recreation and devotion in a joyful atmosphere of companionship, service, and liturgy. Philip Neri challenges each of us to begin improving the Church and the world by changing ourselves with unfailing joy.

“There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.” Is the Lord inviting you to share your gifts as a priest, deacon, sister or brother? Contact the Vocation Office at (415) 614-5684 or email:

The Church encourages frequent, even daily, Holy Communion, but if at any time we cannot go to Mass in or out of this season of the Coronavirus, we can still unite ourselves to the Eucharist through making a spiritual Communion. By making an Act of Spiritual Communion, we express our faith in Christ’s Real Presence in the Eu-charist and ask him to unite himself with us.

Act of Spiritual Communion written by St. Alphonsus de Liguori

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
