Message from the desk of the Pastor

My dear people of God,

Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. We are also baptized into our Lord’s life. At baptism we enter into a special relationship with God and call God “Aba”, Father. We, therefore, enter into a relationship with Jesus and with all who are baptized. We are brothers and sisters.

Why do we Catholics dip our fingers in the holy water at the entrance of church and make the sign of the cross?

The water in those fonts reminds us of Christ going down into the waters of the Jordan. That water reminds us of our own baptism by which we entered into God’s family, God’s church. The sign of the cross made over our body means washing away the distractions and temptations of the world as we enter God’s house to worship him.

Making the sign of the cross reminds us that Jesus died on a cross for all of us, sinners. It reminds us that we are entering church to offer up the sacrifice of the cross, Holy mass.

The sign of the cross recalls and renews our faith in the Holy Trinity. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit were all present at the baptism of our Lord. The Holy Spirit (Trinity) is present in a special way in every mass.

Just as we are buried with Christ in the waters of baptism, so shall we rise with him.

We make the same sign of the Cross as we leave church, strengthened with God’s life, encouraged by God’s word, and nourished with God’s Body. We have offered the Son of God with whom his Father was well pleased.

Because of this rich meaning everyone of us should try to make the sign of the cross with thought and dignity. Keep at least these two meanings in mind. Je-sus died on a cross for me and I am entering here to renew that sacrifice. And the other idea of the Father, Son and Spirit being present here in a special way. Make that sacred sign devoutly and thoughtfully and mass will mean much more to you.

The start of the New Year provided us with an opportunity to review our commitment to Christ and reflect on our calling as a member of God’s family. Our special role is to announce Jesus to the world. We are all called to witness to Christ in our lives and to make the world a better place by word and deed wherever we go.

May God bless you.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Joseph

When Elijah said, “Lord, I want to die.” God gave him strength to live. -1 Kings 19

In 1 Kings 19, everyone wanted Elijah to die because "he

had killed all the prophets with a sword.” When Elijah overheard this, he was afraid and ran away. At this time, Elijah was in the desert and that was when he wanted to die. He prayed that God will let him die. Elijah got tired and he ended up falling asleep. He didn't have the strength to eat anything until an Angel appeared to him. The Angel told Elijah to eat and if he didn't, the journey would be too difficult for him. He finally ate and fell back to sleep once again. The food gave him the strength to go on for forty days. God ended up finding Elijah and asked him why he was here. God told him to stand in front of him on the mountain. A lot of things started to happen, but God wasn’t in any of it. Have you ever been like Elijah where it is so difficult for you do ordinary things in your daily life? If this is you, I wrote a letter to those who are struggling with depression and you can find it on my

blog. Kylie

Pro-Life: The value of life has not changed, our culture has. We must turn from being a culture of death to one that values life. When life is not valued inside the womb, it will not be valued outside the womb. The violence on our streets and in the cit-

ies are proof of that statement.

Dear Lord, we pray that the Blessed Mother wrap her mantle around your priests and through her intercession strengthen them for their ministry. We pray that Mary will guide your priests to follow her own words, “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5) May your priest have the heart of St. Joseph, Mary’s most chaste spouse. May the Blessed Mother’s own pierced heart inspire them to embrace all who suffer at the foot of the cross. May your priest be holy, filled with the fire of your love seek-ing nothing but your greater glory and the salvation of souls. Amen.
