TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constantinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Christianizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day. An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecution and migration as people sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collaboration among Christians of East and West, a situation that challenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dear Parishioners and Visitors, We have just celebrated the 88th Parish Festival. What an amazing experience! For me this was the first Parish Festival at St. Mary’s. Some of you will have stories of several years of Festival Celebrations! For me it was far beyond my expectations about Parish Festival. It is the story of Parish unity. I want to thank everyone who made this year’s celebration so wonderful. I would start thanking God for helping us throughout the planning, preparation and the running of the event. I was trying to fix the Heating and Air Condition system in our Church from May 2019 and is still incomplete. God fixed the Air Condition for the whole of Sacramento in a flash of a moment! Wow !. The weather was so amazing on Saturday and Sunday ! I heard from many people that this year the attendance at our Festival was much higher compared to the past some years! I know the increased number of attendance was not due to the new Pastor but due to the very conducive weather this year! I want to thank Joe and Marte Frasca and family for Chairing this year’s Parish Festival. They had been Chair-ing this event the past few years and wanted to take a break this year .Finding no other person volunteering this year, I asked Joe and Marte if they could Chair this year’s Festival and they said ‘Yes’. That was a great relief for me. Thank you Marte and Joe Frasca for the amazing work. On behalf of the St. Mary Parish and School Family I thank you most sincerely for the great work you have done. I want to thank all the team both from the Parish and the School who cooperated and helped in the entire organization of the Parish Festival. Your generosity and voluntary spirit is greatly appreciated and it won’t go unrewarded by our loving God. I want to thank Traci Peters, Parish Business Manager, who helped and managed all the things necessary for the Parish Festival and helped the Festival Chairperson to organize everything well in advance. I want to thank all those who managed the Stalls/ Booths and the wonderful teams who entertained the audience on Saturday and Sunday. Sincere thanks to all generous people who sponsored or donated various items towards the Festival. Let me thank all the well-wishers and friends of St. Mary Parish who have supported this Parish from it’s inception. St. Mary School Families gave wonderful generous cooperation for the Festival and I want to thank you most sincerely. While thanking you all, I want to request your continued support in the future. Keep up the Family Spirit . Keep up the strong bond between the Parish and the School. Although we had many helping hands for the immediate preparations of the Parish Festival, there was only very few helping hands for the remote preparations for the Festival. This could be one of the reasons why not many wanted to Chair this event when it was announced. So, we need more and more people to volunteer to organize such events in the future. I heard comments from some of the volunteers that it is the very same people who help every year. We should try to make a change in that approach. We know that everybody is busy but please give a bit of your precious time for this bigger Parish Family and be willing to share the burden and lighten the burden of the few who are helping such events all the time. We all enjoy the Parish Festival but our joy would be greater when we have given a bit of our time and energy to the arrangements of such events. I feel proud to be part of this Parish Family and love to see you all expressing your faith in action! Fr. Sijo, the Parochial Vicar and I want to thank each and every member of the St. Mary Family for your contributions towards building up this Family. We are constantly under the Guidance of our Blessed Mother , the Patroness of our Family and we trust in her powerful intercession. As a Mother she loves us and nourishes us and she would lead us all to her Son, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us now and always. Amen. Fr. Antony Vadakara CMI—Your Pastor

WELCOME THE STRANGER We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and stories on the news about immigrants from Latin America and refugees from Syria fleeing violence and destruction in their own countries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their countries, who fail to welcome the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus’ call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? “They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations . . . to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the L .” In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to welcome these strangers, to welcome the discipline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to “strive to enter through the narrow gate” into the glory of God’s own homeland, the reign of God. Non-silent Retreat for Women and Men Fr. Brendan McGuire

Friday, October 18, 4:00pm through

Sunday, October 20, 2:00pm When our cell phones or computers don’t work as they should, we are told to “hard re-set” them. That means literally turning the power off and restarting them. Our spiritual lives are the same. Sometimes things are not working as they should and we need to do something. Come and re-set your spiritual life. Fr. Brendan will use his experience as a former executive from the IT world to guide people working in the tech industry through a re-set procedure for our spiritual life. You can register at www.jrclosaltos.org or call 408-917-4010.
