+WEEKLY MEDITATION+

Dear Faithful,

St. Ignatius of Loyola whose feast day we celebrate on Friday used to tell his Jesuits that “if because of the great burden of your work you can not do any of your other usual prayer duties , you should never omit this exercise.” The exercise he was referring to was called the “Examination of Consciousness.” Sounds complicated, but quite simply it means bringing to mind God’s actions in our lives and our faithful-ness to them. It is different therefore from a standard examination of conscience. We are here trying to put our lives in the context of our loving relationship with God.

•Step One: to remember the moments shared with God and the signs of his love. It is identifying God’s grace in our lives; e.g. how did God make himself present to us today? A kind word from a stranger; a project accomplished; a suffering endured. Simply “remembering with gratitude God’s love alive in our life.” The grace we want here is Gratitude.

•Step Two: Asking Jesus’ Spirit to show us the truth of our life. What was mov-ing us during the day? Was it God’s Spirit or a spirit of darkness? The grace here is to be able to discern the different powers that seek to influence us.

•Step Three: Examining how we responded. Did we do God’s will? Did we fall into selfishness or sin? Did we do what we had promised God at the beginning of the day. The grace here is to know our sins and to repent because of the loving relationship we have with God.

•Step Four: Simply speak to Jesus, present to you– thank him, ask his help to improve our virtues. This step should flow naturally from the above. Prayer above all is simply a loving conversation with He who loves us. The grace here is to build our relationship with Jesus.

•Step Five: What does Jesus want us to accomplish tomorrow? What is he ask-ing us to work at and overcome? Ask his help. The grace here is reform.

If we do this exercise regularly we shall find that we develop a whole new awareness of God’s presence in our lives—the presence of a God who loves us and wishes to heal us. We become able to renounce our petty self and take up our true destiny to become saints. It builds trust because we begin to see God working in our lives positively; it builds positively because we begin to experience Jesus’ power to change us and above all it builds love because we see our relationship with God.

How long should this take? Probably about 10-15 mins. Some days we might spend more time on one of the sections. Sometimes we might have a much quicker run through. The key is to do it consistently and then gradually we shall found ourselves recapping it briefly during the day. Don’t worry either if some of the steps overlap.

God bless, Fr. Dominic. (On the internet there are different versions—this is mod-elled on one whose author is unknown but entitled The Consciousness Examen. See me if you would like a copy.)

August Mass changes in Scunthorpe.

'Earlier in the spring the priests of the Scunthorpe Deanery got together to co-ordinate their holiday plans so that the current schedule of Masses could be maintained throughout the summer. However unforeseen family circum-stances mean that this is no longer the case. Therefore for the weekends of 8/9 and 15/16 August Masses in Scunthorpe and Ashby will be as follows:

Saturday 6.30pm St Bernadette’s Sunday 9.30am Holy Souls 10.30am St Bernadette’s 6.30pm Holy Souls

The Deanery priests hope that parishioners will understand the reason for these changes, and will realise that such changes may need to reoccur in the future as the number of priests in the Deanery decreases by one in the au-tumn.' Also there will be no vigil mass at Brigg on Saturday August 15th.

COMMUNITIES OF ENQUIRY

The next three Community of Enquiry meetings will be at Holy Rood Pres-bytery, Market Rasen, from 9.00 am till 12.45 pm on Saturday 1st August, Sat 5th September, and Sat 3rd October (ie every first Saturday of each month).
