Sheep on the line
I spend quite a lot of time on trains, mainly for work reasons. Which is good because I like trains and they are sometimes delayed so I spend more time on them. If you have not tried it, use the new service to Oxford from Haddenham. In the not too distant future we shall hopefully have trains to Milton Keynes. These are the services we need. It is much more important to have local reliable services to connect with lines to the rest of the country and avoid going through London, than money spent on HS2 in my, not very, humble opinion. Which brings me to changes in services and timetables for the parish. This Autumn there will be more services at both ends of the parish. There will be worship each Sunday at both Stone and Dinton and we are keeping our links with our friends in the Methodist chapel. Like trains, these are the local services we need.
Trains are by and large reliable, although sometimes they are delayed. Reasons include: hot weather affecting the track, cold weather affecting the track and the latest one I have experienced was sheep on the line. I have also had three consecutive journeys where there was a delay because of a broken down train in front. When I mentioned this to a fellow passenger they told me about their delayed trip on the Tran Siberian Railway – which made my anecdote about waiting in Basingstoke sound a bit dull.
So please look at the new services on offer and come to church.

Adults Not Allowed! A review of The Lion’s world –
A Journey into the heart of Narnia by Rowan Williams Published by SPCK Price £8.99
I vaguely remember reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at junior school. I must have been intrigued by the title. Like many
books for young people the children are the heroes, as they know more than the adults in the story. They gain access to a secret world where grown-ups are not allowed. I encountered more of CS Lewis books later when I was introduced to his works on Christianity, such as Mere Christianity and the Screwtape Letters. He wrote very widely on many subjects including science fiction stories. Interest in Lewis continues to grow with a number of biographies, plays and films
about his tragic love story with Joy Davidman and the films of the Narnia books.
Rowan Williams’ book on Lewis was a delightful surprise for me as Lewis was never well regarded by theologians. Theologians probably want books on theology to be written by other theologians not English teachers. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is an allegory of the Gospel as are the other books in the series. Williams investigates the religious aspect of the whole series. A very good read for fans of Lewis.

Coach trip to Cookham and visit to the Stanley Spencer Gallery
There may be spaces on this visit - If you are interested please ring
Joan on 748530 Cost £22.50
Coach leaves Stone Village Hall at 10.40 am
Cookham is a delightful small town on the Thames with a C12th church and an ancient High Street. It is particularly known as the home of artist Stanley Spencer, most of whose work depicts villagers and village life in Cookham. Kenneth Grahame was born nearby and The Wind in the Willows was inspired by the River at Cookham. There are shops, cafes and river walks to enjoy. We plan to arrive at the gallery at 11.30 and an introductory talk and a village walk are included in the price, each lasting one hour.. Do take coffee and a snack on the coach as we will not be free for lunch until 1.30pm, when we have 2 hours to eat and explore the village before leaving for home at 3.30pm.

The Fabric Committee of St John the Baptist Church Stone invite you to join us in a working party at the church, to work on minor jobs both in the church and around the churchyard. No experience necessary just a willingness to help with the upkeep of the church.
Jobs that need doing include clearing the soak away gullies, painting the downpipes and guttering, weeding and sweeping. Makers of tea will also be welcomed.
These events are not exclusively for the church congregation. So if you walk past or through the churchyard, or you live overlooking the church, or you just live in the village and appreciate having the church there, please feel free to come and help, you will be greeted with a warm welcome.
The working party dates are:
5th August @ 10am 12th August @ 10am 30th September @ 10am
If you can bring any tools with you that would be appreciated but not a requirement. For example a wire brush to get the rust off the drainpipes, paintbrushes, brooms, rubber gloves etc.

AUGUST GARDENING NOTES
It rather looks as 2017 will be a very early year for fruit and vegetables, certainly soft fruit ripened early than usual with good crops.
The one vegetable that most gardeners love to grow also seems to be rather on the early side, let us hope the flowers set and a good crop develops. If you are going on holiday make sure the beans get picked, otherwise the plant may well stop growing new pods.
Tall growing plants such as out-door tomatoes, dahlias and chrysanthemums need to be well staked as there is nothing worse than finding them blown over. The tomatoes would benefit from having the tops pinched out, to speed development of the top truss and help the fruit to ripen before bad weather sets in.
The weather this year seems to have suited all manner of shrubs and herbaceous plants. Shrubs that have finished flowering will need the flowering shoots shortening and thinning out, and any weak and old wood removed. Also it would be a good idea to take a close look at non flowering bushes, as often unnoticed they get too large for the space in which they are growing.
Herbaceous plants that have flowered need to be dead headed and tided up and make sure that later tall flowering plants are supported.
August is one of the best months to take cuttings. Heathers, geraniums, fuchsias, shrubs, currants and gooseberries will all produce new plants with a bit of luck.

Stone Sausage & Beer Festival : Saturday 5th
August 2017 A note from organiser Adam Rossiter:
Since 2014 Julie (my wife) and I have been organising beer festivals in our garden for friends and family, we called it The Chiltern Avenue Sausage & Beer Festival as we live on Chiltern Avenue in Stone.
Each year it got bigger and bigger, so much, that last year saw 288 pints of ale & cider, Pimms & Fizz for the ladies, over 100 guests, 2 live musicians, children's entertainment, enough food for everyone and a visit from CAMRA's (campaign for real ale) very own Swan Supping magazine!
A lot of our guests said that it had grown so much that we should do it on the field, invite the public and raise money for the village. So that is exactly what we are doing. We have the backing from the Parish Council to use the Stone Recreation Ground and the Jubilee Pavilion. We have local companies sponsoring the event. We have backing from the local radio station Mix96, they have agreed to bring their kit down and lend us Ben Moseby from the Breakfast Show to handle the day's proceedings. XT brewery from Long Crendon has offered to lend us equipment to help with all the firkins, plus much, much more!
