Re-Licensing of Lay Reader

Mrs Judith Saunders (Buckinham Archdeaconry Adviser for Licensed Lay Ministry) was guest preacher at the All Age Holy Communion Service at St John Baptist on Sunday 4 September. She came to re-license Mrs. Angela Rich as a Lay Reader (LLM) following her qualification within the Diocese. Angela had served as a lay reader in the Diocese of Rochester and had assisted Peter in their previous parish in Gravesend. In presenting the Licence Judith said the occasion gave her special pleasure because she too had moved from the Rochester Diocese to Buckingham and had known Angela for a number of years. Angela will join Avril Clark our existing LLM in performing ministry duties within the Parish under the supervision of the Vicar.

It’s that time of year again! Time to think of

CHRISTMAS SHOEBOXES FOR ROMANIA of course!

Shoeboxes are packed with gifts for the whole family – something for Dad, Mum, boy and girl and perhaps baby. The Gaiz family from Pericei, Romania wrote to me as follows:

“We do not speak any english, but we asked a good friend of ours to translate. Our package was much appreciated, it was really helpful because we can’t afford much. We don’t have too much money but we are doing our own crops, by hand, we don’t have any machines. As for a finish, thank you very much again, and we do appreciate your help; everything is good when you don’t have a lot!

Kind regards from Gall, Arnold, Magdalena and Sandor”

You can see how much your gifts are appreciated. The following are suggested items for each shoebox. This is obviously a quite extensive and expensive list so you may like to choose some items, let me have them and I can then fill a shoebox appropriately.

Shampoo/shower gel/deodorant Pens/pencils/crayons/felt tips Soap/flannel Colouring books/writing pads/ Toothpast/brush Small notebooks Safety razors Travel size games: Brush/comb draughts/dominoes/playing cards Hair accessories Small toys: Plasters/sewing kit yoyo, skipping rope, ball, puzzle Screwdriver/tape measure Small teddy/doll/soft toy Simple solar powered calculator Gloves, scarves/hats Sweets/chocolate Socks/tights

Customs rule that the following MUST NOT BE SENT: Medicines or medical products, money, tinned food, perfume, coffee, tea or alcohol Out of date items

ALL ITEMS TO ME BY THE END OF OCTOBER, PLEASE Please contact me, Sue Spinks, for any more information or for a leaflet giving full details of how to pack your shoebox Tel 748369 [email protected]

The collection for August for Helen & Douglas House was £142.00

Princes Risborough Tree of Light

Dedicate a light on Princes Risborough’s Tree of Light

The Tree of Light in the gardens at the corner of New Road and Duke Street in Princes Risborough provides an opportunity to honour, remember or celebrate the life of someone special by sponsoring a light on the Tree.

The dedication ceremony will take place at 4.00 p.m. on Sunday 27 November. The names of those being remembered will be recorded on display boards close to the Tree of Light, and will be published in the Bucks Free Press. Lights on the Tree will remain lit until the end of the year.

All proceeds will be shared between the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home and Rotary charities. Over £4000 was donated in 2010.

Further information and sponsor forms are available from David Griggs on 01844 345554. Sponsor forms are also available from the Princes Risborough Information Centre.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Princes Risborough.

The Iain Rennie Hospice at Home has been caring for patients and families across the Chilterns area of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire for over 25 years. It offers free specialist and supportive care and advice for patients with cancer and other life threatening illnesses in their homes.

and

The Rotary Club of Princes Risborough was founded in 1981. It raises funds to support both local and international causes, undertakes projects in the local community and organises and funds activities, particularly for the elderly and young people. The motto of Rotary, a worldwide organisation with 1.2 million members, is “Service above Self”.

DINTON PARISH HALL

The Village hall committee are in the process of getting quotes for installing gas and then a gas boiler at the village hall. The existing boiling keeps breaking down and costs of call out fees are considerable. Hopefully a new boiler would be more efficient and hopefully, cheaper!

As part of our fund raising we are holding a Quiz night on Saturday 22nd October. Doors open at 7.30 for a 8 pm start. It costs £5 per head and bring your own drink and food. Tables of up to 8 can be booked in advance with Sylvia Eaton 01296 748537. Come and join us for a fun evening.

Dear Friends,

One of the most pleasing sight during the year is a combine harvester at work and a newly cut field of corn. So our Harvest Festivals are upon us, a time to thank God for all his provisions for our daily needs, so much of which we take for granted until things go wrong – droughts or floods – and then we complain!

God is our Maker and Creator of the world, and so much more besides. It is God who is the mind behind all of Creation, and its sustainer. He has given us the ability to discover truths about the world and also responsibility in caring for it. Science can go so far, but where does love and loyalty, beauty and the benevolence of God’s Creation fit in?

So do come along and celebrate with us this Harvest time, and also take the opportunity to give a small thank offering to God which will be given to those in need at this time. Services will be held on:

SUNDAY 2ND

OCT 10.00am at Stone Church, when gifts from our gardens or tinned produce will be passed on to The Vineyard Storehouse in Aylesbury, which provides free furniture, clothing and food for those who are struggling financially.

SUNDAY 9TH

OCT 11.00am at Dinton Church, when the Choir will take part in the Harvest Thanksgiving Service. This will be followed by a free lunch at Dinton Village Hall. Harvest gifts from this Service will also be donated to the Vineyard. In preparation for this Service, YOUNG PEOPLE are invited to come along to Dinton Church on SATURDAY 8

TH OCT at 2.30pm to decorate Harvest boxes

etc. for the following day. Yours in His service,

PETER RICH (Rev) Priest in Charge

Butterflies in St John’s Churchyard Stone

For more than 10 years I have been conducting a survey of the butterflies to be found in St John’s Churchyard, Stone for the benefit of the Upper Thames Branch of Butterfly Conservation who like to monitor the population of butterflies in all the churchyards in their region. Over the past 10 years the butterfly population in our churchyard has fluctuated from less than 10 up to 19 species – to put these numbers in context one has to appreciate that there are only just over 50 different species of butterfly in the British Isles and any garden which manages to attract more than 20 species is doing extremely well. In the year in which 19 species were recorded our churchyard produced the greatest number of species in any churchyard in the region.

Some years ago the maintenance of the churchyard was sadly neglected, but while the whole area became overgrown the butterflies flourished and there were so many Ringlets and Gatekeepers that I stopped counting when I had recorded more than 30 of each species. Then a programme of grass cutting and removal of undergrowth was started and the butterflies vanished dramatically and there was very little for me to record. It was at this time that I had a discussion with those responsible for maintaining the churchyard and it was agreed that a number of areas would be left uncut to give the wild flowers and grasses a chance to develop and seed before they were cut down. This has produced a churchyard which has some well-tended areas where the graves are clear of grass and weeds and a number of areas where the grass, wild flowers and butterflies can flourish.

As I write in July 2011 I am pleased to report that I have recorded 18 different species of butterfly in our churchyard plus a Humming Bird Hawk Moth so far this year and as there are still a few months of the season left I hope to record at least two more species – this will make 2011 the best year ever for butterflies in our churchyard.

I would like to conclude by thanking all those who are involved in the maintenance of St John’s Churchyard and to confirm that the butterflies appreciate being given the conditions in which to feed and breed.

E Petition I don't know if you are all aware of the NEW epetition website? If you have already signed the STOP HS2 petition online, you should still sign this one as this is a direct feed to the government website and once the signatories hit 100,000 a parliamentary debate will be considered. Please note it is not guaranteed - but it is guaranteed that this route to a debate will not be available if the 100,000 target is NOT reached! If you look at the other epetitions on the website, you will see (a) how many there now are, and (b) how relatively low down this petition is. This state of affairs must be changed, and quickly - surely we can do better than this? If you haven't already done so, please do so now, and circulate to family, friends, and anyone else whom you think will be prepared to help. Timing is crucial - it should be up at the right level BEFORE the next session of parliament, or it will be being debated after decisions have been taken. There is a two stage process, with an electronic signing, that is followed by an email verification of your email address, so make sure you do both. Your signature will not be counted until you get a message confirming your name has been added. Some people have found that it takes several attempts to be counted, so be persistent.

Anne Evans

When Anne became 80 years old earlier this year there was a special sense of celebration about it. She had seriously wondered whether she would survive her last major operation, and then her rate of progress had seemed frustratingly slow. But she did celebrate that milestone birthday and was particularly glad to have done so.

As someone born in the Swansea Valley being Welsh was an important aspect of who Anne was and she was keen to belong to the local Welsh Society in this area.

She moved to Aylesbury with her parents when she was around 7 years old and this area then became home. It was in this area that most of her deep friendships were formed. She developed mutually supportive relationships with her neighbours. She belonged to the British Legion and the Breathe Easy Group. She was involved both as a member of this Church and of St. John the Baptist Parish Church. Her major contribution was as a District Nurse, both in Coventry and in this area. She made life long friends with a number of her nursing colleagues and was deeply committed to her highly skilled and caring profession.

In retirement Anne continued to keep busy. She cherished her family and the extended family formed through her marriage to Slim.

As an intelligent and able woman her interests included reading and crossword puzzles.

She wanted to have the passage from Ecclesiastes read on this occasion. It speaks about significant times, different phases of life, reacting in appropriate ways to changing circumstances. It is a reminder of the constant presence of God throughout our lives, sustaining, challenging, guiding and encouraging us.

It is to our consistently caring Creator that we entrust Anne’s life this day, with thankfulness for all the ways in which her life has enriched our own.

DINTON PARISH FETE Another successful fete this year - and without the threatening rain!! As usual everyone worked hard but well together and the result is that we should be able to pay out approximately £7,500. This is wonderful news for those in the Parish who will benefit. We were privileged to have the fly past of a Spitfire. It was a wonderful sight the pilot dipped his wings in salute. Hope he saw us waving? On behalf of the Committee may I say a HUGE THANK YOU to all the wonderful "volunteers" who collected equipment; assembled it on the field; manned stalls; sorted the money and finally cleared the field and returned equipment for another year. We invite everyone to join us for a drink in the Dinton Village Hall on Tuesday 18th October at 7.30 when we will distribute cheques to those organisations who requested a share of the profits. We look forward to seeing you there. Sylvia Eaton - Chairman Dinton Fete Committee

October Gardening

It is now time to dig and store any dahlias, chrysanthemums and gladioli you wish to grow again next year. Dahlias need the most care before putting them into store. Cut the top growth, lift out of the soil and stand the tubers upside down to dry out in a place where they will not get frosted and keep an eye on them in case some go mouldy. Remove any that are. Gladioli are much easier to look after. Dig up the corms cut off the stem leaving ½ inch stalk, dry and store in shallow boxes out of the frost. Dig the chrysanthemums, wash off the soil, trim the shoots to about six inches, and plant in shallow trays. These are best kept out of the frost either in a cold frame or greenhouse Cuttings of blackcurrants and gooseberries can be taken now if you to increase your stock from current year’s growth make cutting 8 to 19 inches long. Place in a shallow trench somewhere they can be left undisturbed. And with any luck you should have some new bushes in a year's time As always at this time of year try to clear any vacant ground of weeds. Spread manure and or compost and start digging. On heavy soils try to leave as rough as possible for the Winter frosts to break down. If you would like some fresh mint through the Winter pull a few of the long roots, fill a 5 inch pot with any compost to within an inch or so of the top, wind the root round the top of the soil fill the pot water and keep in the kitchen window and the mint will soon grow. Michael Lunts “Quirkish Delight”

Thursday 20 October 7pm for 7.30pm Stone Methodist Chapel Eythrope Road

Tickets £10 from David Pickup 01296 397794

Actor, singer and pianist Michael Lunts, familiar to Theatre in Villages venues from his many tours, offers this one-man musical revue taking a light-hearted look at the English. Alongside musical offerings from Noel Coward, Gilbert and Sullivan, Flanders and Swann and others (and including some of his own creations) Michael includes a sprinkling of comic verse from the likes of John Betjeman, Ogden Nash and other arch-observers of the national character. The result is an affectionate and often hilarious foray through the quirks of a people who do not always take themselves as seriously as those stiff upper lips might suggest!

"Michael Lunts demonstrates again what a superb pianist he is, and with apparently effortless ease combines this skill with faultless

singing and delightful comic verse”. Suitable for age 12+
